10 App Store Games To Watch [8/1/16]

roundup-20160801-intro

The App Store continues to be flooded with new games, and I continue to try and dig out the ones that aren’t some variant of slots or a game that was “loosely” based off of a template from a “learn to code in 12 easy steps” online course.  I found another online game that suits me in the form of ION Space.  It’s a dual stick space shooter that handles my two biggest multiplayer pet peeves perfectly: there’s no chat option, and each game forces you to start fresh so you’re not bullied by the folks that play it 80 hours a week to your measly 2 hours.  Kitten Squad gives Legend Of Zelda style game play a social bent.  Thankfully the “save the animals” aspect is presented fashionably and not shoved down your throat, and while the levels can get a bit repetitive it still manages to provide some old fashioned console game fun.  The Counter Of Death is akin to taking the limited control scheme of Dragon’s Lair and applying it to a Kung Fu game.  It’s surprisingly entertaining, and thanks to the restrictive controls is much more accessible on the touch screen than many full blown action games.

AirAttack - Sublime Scrolling Shooter

Tiny Wings in Review – I dreamed I could fly…

With all the major (hardcore) releases lately from big publishers, it’s easy to forget that not everybody looks for something that complicated in terms of gameplay on the iOS. While creating a runaway hit game that is wholeheartedly embraced by the masses is often difficult to achieve, the ones that do become a screaming success, like Doodle Jump or Cut the Rope. And almost out of the blue, a new star has risen on the horizon with the simple name – Tiny Wings.

10 New App Store Games To Watch [Feb. 21 – 27]

It’s time for another Story as this edition’s lead game is Hot Springs Story, the quirky follow up to the widely revered Game Dev Story.  You trade in your programming shoes for gardening sheers, but the end result is still the quest to be number 1.  If you prefer futuristic sports brawls you might want to check out Speedball 2 Evolution, the iPhone update of a 20+ year old franchise.  If you’re looking for a causal game that’s a bit different I’d recommend Slot Life: Haunted Mansion, and slot machine simulation with a story and some mini-games to augment the game play.  For puzzle fans there’s RoboSockets, a game that’s part Tetris, part pipes and part match 3.  That’s a lot of parts!
