Armageddon Wars in Review – Turn-based holocaust is here!
Turn-based strategy games are not the most populated genre on the AppStore, despite being ideal for the iDevice. At the same time the majority of the titles that do get released end up of decent quality. And some are downright excellent, like the recent Highborn (TMA Review) or the superb Rogue Planet (TMA Review). But which category does Armageddon Wars fall into?

Star Wars is definitely one of the pillars of science-fiction. The original trilogy revolutionized how the general public perceive the genre and has left it’s trail in almost all areas of life – be it toys, CCGs, books or videogames. Even on the iDevice the franchise has left quite an impression, with Star Wars The Force Unleashed and the recent Star Wars: Trench Run being the most noteworthy titles. And now they have been joined by arguably the best Star Wars game on the iDevice to date in the form of a Tower Defence – Star Wars: Battle for Hoth.
Highborn in Review – The ultimate fight with an Arch-lich named Floyd
Hello there, folks! I’m finally back from my long deserved vacation in the wonderful Italian town of Rimini. I know, you missed me 
Anyhow, I won’t bore you with descriptions of the wonderful time I had. Instead, allow me to tell you about a game that has kept me entertained during the long flights there and back as well as in some lengthy train trips. I’m talking, of course, about a recently released TBS by the name of Highborn.
Carcassonne in review – more confusing to spell than play
I used to play a game on the PocketPC called Cities, which I took to be a stripped down version of Carcassonne, especially since the tiles were taken directly from the Carcassonne tile library. While Cities would actually make a good mini-game for Carcassonne, Carcassonne has so much more to offer. I never would have guessed that a tile based city building board game could be so strategic, but even the solitaire mode pretty much gets the best of me. It’s especially compelling because there is no combat involved, which is unusual for what amounts to a turn-based strategy game. The slow pace might be a bit daunting for some, but slow pace is right up my alley these days.
EA’s Risk to pound weak Ukraine this summer
As if the glorious Conquest wasn’t enough, board-game mongering EA will bring out an official RISK strategy game this summer. Its name? (cue drumroll) RISK (end drumroll… I said end it dammit!). In case you were wondering, you’ll be able to demolish Ukraine with up to 5 other players in WiFi, Bluetooth and everyone’s finger-print smudging favourite: pass ‘n play. EA reckon they’ve got a great soundtrack to accompany the entire thing, something I look forward to testing myself. The release date is somewhat of a secret unless you can suss its debut by the word ‘summer’.

Land Air Sea Warfare in Review – An RTS that is just too full-featured for the iDevice…
Real-time strategy games have had an extremely bumpy ride on the iPhone and iPod Touch. To date, not one developer has been able to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that comfortable play is even possible for an RTS game on the iPhone. The closest one was probably COMMAND & CONQUER™ RED ALERT™ (TMA Review), which, unfortunately, still left a lot to desire in the interface department. And recently a new contender stepped on the arena – Land Air Sea Warfare. Can it succeed where many others have failed?
Plants vs Zombies HD in Review – Bigger and Better Than Ever!
Truth be told, the first thing I took care of when I purchased my own iPad was to get a copy of Plants vs. Zombies HD. I snuck out on lunch break from work and after buying my iPad, I made a beeline for the nearest Wifi spot and downloaded the game straightaway. By the time I got back to the office, I was proudly showing off my very first acquisition, and my colleagues were just as eager as I was to give this baby a test drive.

MIKADO DEFENDERS in Review – Applying Sun Tzu’s Art of war to tower defence
With such an abundance of Tower Defense games on the App Store, it’s getting increasingly hard to stand out from the crowd. That said however, MIKADO DEFENDERS doesn’t have that problem – this latest title stands out on the publisher name alone. The legendary TAITO Corporation, previously known on the iDevice platform mostly for their reiterations of the classic franchises like SPACE INVADERS (TMA Review) and ARKANOID (TMA Review), has finally graced us with a title originally designed for the iPhone. Ooooh, I just can’t wait!
Debut: OpenTTD for the iPad – transport tycooned!
I must’ve spent ages on Transport Tycoon Deluxe back in the day – I still consider it one of the best tycoon games ever made and certainly the best transportation one. Apparently I’m not the only one to feel like that, hence the OpenTTD project that recently went to version 1.0.0 after about 6 years in development. It is a complete cross-platform remake of the original with lots of added features, huge maps, new vehicles, industries, and much more.
Why am I writing all of this here? Well, because the TMA’s prolific pal: ZodTTD, has already released a FREE port of OpenTTD on the iPAD! I know some of you may have grabbed a previous version of OpenTTD for the iPhone but lets face it – the controls simply didn’t work for the small screen and the overall experience was terrible. With the larger screen real estate of the iPad it looks god damn amazing – I wish I had one already! So if you’re a fan of tycoon games and already a lucky owner of an iPad – what are you waiting for?
