The VOID in Review – The Space Between

thevoid1I have to admit, it’s been a while since I’ve played a game like this. You see, good top-down-space-shooters (if this is a genre of gaming) are tough to come by. Even more so, it’s tough to find them in the AppStore. Yet, here is The VOID waiting to take its place alongside other worthy games in this sub-genre. Let me just say, apart from any and every exaggeration, The VOID is definitely worth your money.

Wolfenstein 3D Classic in Review – Generation X Nostalgia

Let’s rewind to 1996 shall we? 12 years ago, I had an archaic Packard Bell Desktop Pentium that ran at a snail’s pace of only 75 MHz, but I played lots of games on it. One of those games was Wolfenstein 3D. This game was unlike any other PC game I had played before because it had this new gaming experience of first person perspective! Since the character in Wolfenstein had a gun, this became better known as FPS or First Person Shooter. I was instantly mesmerized by this graphic wonder of FPS!

Metal Gear Solid Touch in Review – A Critical Look

I am bracing myself for a torrent of scathing comments. So let me start off by saying that I love the Metal Gear series. I’ve played it for the NES, PSP, PS2, and PS3. I believe it to be one of the most iconic franchises. I played through all of Metal Gear Solid 4 (MGS4) and believe it to be a ground breaking game in both its cinematic value and gameplay. Unfortunately, Metal Gear Solid Touch (MGST) fails to reach that iconic status. It fails to live up to the hype of its namesake.

This being said, how does the App fare by itself? Mixed at best.

Shooter – the Official Movie Game now out, $0.99 + Impressions

shooter_moviegame1Paramount has just released what could be their best App Store offering to date in Shooter. If you enjoyed watching the movie starring Mark Walberg and love Sniper/Shooting games, then the surprisingly deep Shooter is a must have for your iPhone/iPod Touch. (did I mention that the intro price is only $0.99?)

Shooter – The Official Movie Game is one of the first true 1st person shooters to be released on the iPhone and iPod Touch. As Gunnery Sergeant Bob Lee Swagger, you must clear your name after being accused of an assassination attempt on the President. Stealthy pursuit, a steady hand and nerves of steel will allow you to eliminate those responsible.

We previously looked at i Sniper, a decent game that was probably the best of its kind when it was first released. With the arrival of Shooter, there’s no question who’s the new king of  the (Sniper) hill. Impressions and screenshots after the jump.

SpaceX – Grab it while its free

spacex3Ketara Software has recently released SpaceX as a free download (for a limited time) at the App Store. The space shooter does have fairly good graphics and even features a fully customizable ship, where you can purchase both weapon and armor upgrades. Overall I found it to be a pretty decent shooter that kept me busy with all those darn upgrades. Those picky with controls will be glad to know that tilt and touch controls are interchangeable without the need of changing any settings. Simply tap the screen to active the touch controls and let go to to start the accelerometer (very intuitive). If you like blowing things up in space, better grab yourself a copy while its still free. Few more screenshots and video after the break.

ExZeus: Giant Robots and Lasers

exzeus-action

30 January, 2009, a beautiful shooter popped onto the App Store.  ExZeus is developed by HyperDevBox and reminiscent of the days of Galaga or Space Harrier, but gloriously rendered and spectrally highlighted in 3D.  If you like Japanese robots in particular and shooting things as a hobby, get excited because no one does robots better than the Japanese and no one shoots better than a robot.  ExZeus is as per the App Description, a port of the famous arcade hit that has more recently made waves in in the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 2 crowd.

Gameplay video after the jump.

Time Crisis Strike Now Available, $5.99 + Impressions

timecrisis3Time Crisis, the arcade rail shooter we have all come to know and love, has just been released at the App Store by Namco. Namco has already ported over the beloved Katamari Damacy (“I love Katamari“), so its no surprise then that Time Crisis gets the iPhone treatment as well. The arcade and console versions of the game are of course played with the customary light gun and foot pedal, where you step on the pedal to engage enemies and let your foot off to take cover from incoming fire and reload.  Since the iPhone offers neither accessory, Namco has made use of the iPhone’s accelerometer in hopes of recreating the Time Crisis experience.

A Look at i Sniper – Bang! You’re Dead.

isniper1Personally, I haven’t come across that many sniper games for the iPhone. The one or two that I have were underwhelming to say the least. That’s why when I first saw i Sniper, I had fairly high expectations after seeing some rather nice looking screen shots of the game. Developed by MASQ Interactive, i Sniper will take you through 6 missions around the world, with features like ‘concentration’ to steady your shot and tilt controls to aim through your scope.
