As I noted in my recent Alive 4-ever RETURNS review, the dual-stick genre is crowded. In this tough competitive market companies try to find any little thing to differentiate themselves. Embryo Project for their recent entry in the genre Town Raiders 3D have decided to concentrate on the visual side of gaming. Read on to find out if it was worth it in the end.
Dual-stick shooters are popular at the AppStore with titles suitable for almost any taste. Mindless fans adore Minigore (TMA Review) and iDracula – Undead Awakening; while mature, story-loving fans may prefer the stylish Garters & Ghouls (TMA Review) or the addictive Guerrilla Bob (TMA Review). In 2009, the smart-looking, deep RPG-shooter, Alive 4-ever (TMA Review) wowed us. And now it RETURNS, bigger, bloodier and more gorgeous than ever.
When MiniSquadron arrived at the AppStore in November 2009, it immediately got high praise from critics and quite a bit of love from the gaming community. I myself gave it a firm Kiss-it rating and it hasn’t left my iPhone since. That’s why I was thrilled at the opportunity to review its follow-up: MiniSquadron Special Edition
Labegude, France – The Quadsphere today is pleased to announce the release of Icarus-X 1.0, their new game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. Survival horror is one of the most underrepresented genres on the iDevice. Barring a couple of mediocre Resident Evil titles and the superb but short Fallen EP-1 there is really nothing to get the adrenaline flowing. Well, Chillingo decided to capitalise on this lack and released Vampire Origins, a game ambitiously dubbed “The most advanced survival horror to hit the app store”. Read on to find how “advanced” it really is.
Update: Sketch Nation Shooter is now live on the App Store
To date I’ve only done a few reviews of what I would consider “old school” 2D scrolling shooters such as Underground. However the ones I have reviewed and/or own have been great recreations of a classic style of game play that proves the point that when it comes down to it, content is what really matters. In an age of 3D, 4D, l-m-n-o-p-d-…, it’s nice to see simple succeed. Recently I was able to get my hands on a beta copy of an upcoming app store game Sketch Nation Shooter (SNS) by developer Engineous Games. Sketch Nation Shooter is a clever fusion of art and gaming and some creative social networking. Read on to see what I thought of this innovative title. Feel free to discuss this (p)review of Sketch Nation Shooter in our forums.
The Californian Gold Rush which lasted for 7 years in the middle of the 19th century was arguably one of the most romantic periods ever. Some people think that once we finally truly step into space the rush will come again, but this time people will go hunting for rich asteroid deposits the scientists are predicting. How long do we have until the next Gold Rush is a mystery, but Venan Entertainment will be ready for it. Space Miner: Space Ore Bust – is the future miner’s guide to all things asteroid mining -minus the bad puns of course. Feel free to discuss this review of Space Miner: Space Ore Bust in our forums.
Com2uS’s Heavy Gunner 3D ain’t a mouthful, but it sure is a handful. Dual-analogue, tilt controls, explosions, and a hell of a lot of alien invaders – a great legacy for an iDevice shooter. In Heavy Gunner’s explosions and heated action, I’m reminded of an early advert for the Dreamcast which explained, “thing’s never blew up so well”. And indeed they didn’t – that is, until now. 2.99$ is a bargain for this much ‘defend Zion!’ fun!
Somehow, I thought the “undead” craze had all but faded away. I hadn’t found a decent zombie app in what seemed like forever. Then I stumbled across the first appstore offering from Jumbo Squid Productions, a strategic defense like game titled Zogma: Tactical Zombie Survival Simulator. With a name like that, they had me curious. Read more to see if this game had me craving more brains, or less death.
Heavy Gunner 3D is out and serving up 3D action for alien-blasting fans. The action takes place in a cockpit behind dual turrets. Com2uS paid special attention to making killing alien scum fun and intuitive, so apart from pretty nice graphics, Heavy Gunner has a lot of great upgrades and a pretty solid control scheme to recommend it other than its dubbing as ‘Matrix Revolution gunning’ for the iDevice. TouchMyApps will be looking at it later this week, so keep your eyes peeled for our trigger-friendly review. Till then, feel free to discuss Heavy Gunner 3D in our forums.
