Shadowgun (TMA Review), one of the best third person shooters on iOS, has just been updated to support the new iPad’s 2048×1536 resolution. Not only does it get a nice bump up in res count, but it also gets 4x MSAA Anti Aliasing without sacrificing on performance. As such, the visuals will look even more stunning on the latest iPad. Meanwhile for other iDevice owners, this splendid shooter has received some minor bug fixes to improve upon the overall experience. The update is free for those who’ve already purchased the game, otherwise, Shadowgun can now be had for only $2.99 (down from $4.99).
I’ve been playing electronic games for a long time, but it’s really taken me until my iPod Touch to appreciate what the first / third person shooter genre had to offer. Up until now my favorites have been Dead Space (TMA Review) and Modern Combat: Sandstorm (TMA Review), but now I’m adding Shadowgun to that list (I just haven’t figured out where yet). There’s enough depth to keep the game interesting, and at the same time it’s simple enough that people like me who aren’t very good at FPS games can still enjoy it. Don’t get me wrong – even on the easy setting I still repeat my share of sections before getting them right. It’s just that it’s not all that bad having to do so.
If you’re an FPS fan, or you’re curious to see what your little mobile device can do, then the week’s top pick is certainly Shadowgun. The initial release was a bit rocky, but now that the first update has been released, the game packs quite a punch – and it’s even fairly friendly for those that have never played an FPS. On a completely different front there’s Phonect, which is actually an engine rather than a game. It allows your iDevice to detect your hand movements and translate them to in-game actions, and while the initial game using this technology looks kind of ho-hum, the potential gaming possibilities this opens up are what excites me.
