This week was a double home run for iPhone gamers, and I’m not sure which item is bigger news. The fan favorite, I’m sure, is Mirror’s Edge (TMA Review), the long awaited “running with a purpose” game from Electronic Arts. On the flip side is my personal interest of the week, Spider-man: Total Mayhem from Gameloft, a game that takes place in the Ultimate Spiderman universe and looks like it could be one of the best outings for the webbed wall crawler to date. For budding space traders there’s Star Shipping Inc, the latest entry in the growing field of buy low, sell high space games to arrive on the iPhone. Finally, RPG fans are in for a real treat with Rimelands: Hammer Of Thor (TMA Review), brought to you from the fine developers that created Ravensword (TMA Review). Sadly there is no intriguing zombie related news this week, though I did finally get to try Zombie Infection from Gameloft, and I definitely recommend it.
When it comes to RPGs I prefer turn based to real time combat, and while 3D looks spiffy I’d much rather see nicely rendered 2D images. If it needs to be 3D, then more of an isometric or top down perspective is the way to go. A world with a well developed history is a bonus, and quests and NPC interaction are basically a must. As it turns out, Rimelands: Hammer of Thor has all of this in spades, and what at first glance appeared to be “big whoop, another RPG” is now turning into “hey, this is a pretty nice RPG”.
Guess what – people at Apple in charge of reviewing apps seem to have stepped up on their game. Rimelands: Hammer of Thor, the recently previewed contender to one of the top spots in the App Store’s RPG games has been released for everyone to enjoy. I myself have already spent a fair amount of time on it thanks to a hands-on with an earlier build and am sure it will bring hours of fun to any RPG fan. But I can tell you what we have shaping up here will definitely give even the titles from the big developers a run for their money. Rimelands throws in the pot an excellent storyline and setting, great graphics, a deep and varied RPG system and superb replayability to serve the iDevice gamers one of the best RPG games on the platform.

Crescent Moon Games, Rimelands: Hammer of Thor - $4.99
I got interested in Rimelands back in early 2010 when I came across the first batch of screenshots and some basic information on the game. It got me so interested that I contacted Arto and Peter from Dicework Games for an exclusive interview about their project. And now, barely half-a-year later, Rimelands is in its final stages of beta-testing and scheduled to be submitted to Apple for review in a couple of weeks. What’s even better – I can give you a sneak peek of what’s in store!
Rimelands: Hammer of Thor – a hotly anticipated turn-based RPG by Dicework Games in collaboration with Crescent Moon Games – has just launched a dedicated website with in-depth information both about the game mechanics and the world itself. I have interviewed the developers at length about their upcoming title and was left hungry for the game itself.
The game is nearing the first phase of beta-testing so it’s about time to start reading up on the backstory in preparation. The video should also be out soon – so stay tuned for more teasing. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited!

iTête à iTête – Interview with Arto & Peter from Dicework Games – Rimelands: Hammer Of Thor was actually the game we originally wanted to do.
Despite there being over 150 000 apps on the AppStore, many of which are games, quality RPGs are few and far between. And even fewer of them don’t go the Japanimation console style RPG route. Frankly, only three come to my mind – our own shigzeo’s favourite The Quest with its many addons, the excellent old-school Undercroft (TMA Review) and, of course, the much hyped Diablo-clone Dungeon Hunter (TMA Review). And don’t even get me started on Ravensword: The Fallen King (TMA Review). But they should beware, because it seems a new contender to the RPG throne is in the works. I’m talking about the game that came to my attention recently – Rimelands: Hammer Of Thor. Intrigued, I immediately contacted the developers of this ambitious project and secured an interview to learn more details.
Dicework Games is a small company located in the city of Tampere in Finland and consists of the CEO and lead designer Arto Koistinen and the talented graphics artist Peter Finnberg. Having been laid off during company negotiations just 1.5 years after THQ Wireless’s acquisition of Universomo, they decided it was to go solo and started their own company. Their first game was the critically acclaimed Diceworks which was a test of both their skill as well as how well they could do at the AppStore. And now they are steadily finishing up the project they originally conceived when their company formed – a classic Rogue-style RPG game titled Rimelands: Hammer Of Thor. And today I have both of them on the line to talk about it!
Dicework Games have recently updated their blog with some in-depth information and screenshots of their upcoming RPG – Rimelands: Hammer Of Thor. Additionally they have just announced that they will be teaming up with Crescent Moon Games – the developers of Ravensword: The Fallen King (TMA Review) – to put the finishing touches and publish the upcoming game.
Though it’s quite hard to tell at this point – the game seems to be not unlike a certain legendary Rogue and is a turn-based RPG and, thankfully, does NOT involve any kind of Japanimation whatsoever. You can find the original details after the gap, but to sum it up – the combat will use a classic one-action scheme of it’s ancestor along with an expansive character development system and distinct classes. The story will be completely linear with no dialogue trees, though there will be plenty sidequests and hidden treasures to encourage thorough exploration of game areas. A nice touch is including both randomly generated levels along with some pre-designed ones to extend replayability. Oh yeah, and the latter ones will contain puzzles.
