RedSn0w, the popular jailbreaking tool has been updated to version 0.9.10b4 and now includes the long awaited fix for iBooks not being able to run on jailbroken iOS 5.0.1 devices.

The b4 version of redsn0w incorporates the 5.0.1 fix for iBooks, and also for sporadic problems with launchctl.  Thanks to @xvolks for merging the iBooks (sandbox) fix from @comex’s github into the overall corona untether from @pod2g!  As usual, you can choose to install the fix either by re-running redsn0w over your existing jailbreak (de-select Cydia if you do that), or by installing the corona package from Cydia (it’s the same set of files no matter which way you choose).

If you’ve previously jailbroken your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch using redsn0w, all you need to do is re-jailbreak it using 0.9.10b4, but do remember to uncheck the “Install Cydia” option beforehand. Conversely, you can run the latest version of the Corona package (1.0.4) on Cydia in order to use iBooks once again.

The war is on! Thanks to the relentless efforts of the Dev-Team, along with the help of ion1c, an independent security expert, the jailbreaking tools for iOS 4.3.1 was recently released. And in our guide today I’m going to help you set free your iPhone 3GS/4, iPod Touch 3G (except 8Gb)/4G and iPad.

Please note, iPad 2 is not supported! Also, I won’t be going into the details of creating custom firmware (for those upgrading a locked phone that need to preserve the old baseband).

So, if you’re looking for a straight-up jailbreak, let’s dive in!

Also of note, if you desire a clean device while keeping all of your saved games and other stuff, look out for an updated guide on backing up and restoring the info in the near future.

Our toolbox for today:

  • iPhone 3GS/4 or iPod Touch 3G/4G or iPad 1 with iOS 4.3.1/4.3.2
  • redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 – download at Dev-Team’s site – for Windows/Mac
  • Windows/Mac personal computer with the latest version of iTunes
  • The original Apple OS for your specific device – you can download it using iTunes or from the links below for version 4.3.1:

iPhone 4
iPhone 3GS
iPad

Important: For the moment, there is NO unlock for iOS 4.3.1, so if you require one, stick to your current version or use PwnageTool 4.3 (Mac) or sn0wbreeze 2.5 (Windows) to create a custom firmware package for your iDevice with an old baseband (not covered in this tutorial).

Let’s get breaking out of jail!

1. Run iTunes, hold shift and click restore and browse to the OS file. This will take quite some time, so you can safely go and make yourself a spot of tea. After the process is over, you have a virgin iDevice running iOS 4.3.1 version

2. [Officially unlocked or original SIM card available iPhone only] Connect to iTunes and activate your iPhone

3. Run redsn0w (if you’re using Windows 7 make sure to run it in compatibility mode with Windows XP SP3 and as Administrator – configurable in file properties)

4. Click browse and select the downloaded firmware file for your iDevice

5. Wait until it checks the file and press Next

6. After redsn0w processes the iOS file you’ll be presented with a list of options. In our case leave the default settings (as in the screenshot) and press Next

7. Connect your iDevice (if it’s not connected) and power it down according to the instructions on-screen. Press Next.

8. Now we have to put it into DFU mode according to the instructions on-screen:

i) Hold the Power button until the iDevice shows the white Apple logo

ii) Now hold the Home button without releasing the Power button for 10 seconds

iii) Release the Power button while still holding the Home one until redsn0w springs to the next page

9. Behold the Dev-Team crazy pineapple logo on your iDevice while the magic is done

10. After a while your device will power down. If it doesn’t boot up automatically in 30 seconds or so don’t worry, just do it manually.

11. After the iDevice reboots, you’ll see the Cydia icon on the Springboard (note, it is on the second page if no apps were installed on the iDevice)

12. Set up a wireless (Wi-Fi) connection. If you run into issues, try resetting network parameters (Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings) – that should fix the issue

13. Run Cydia and wait while it updates the file structure and exits automatically

14. Start up Cydia and update it completely. Reboot.

15. Start up Cydia again and install the afc2add daemon to provide for the various iPhone browsing apps

Hooray, hooray, you’re now the proud owner of a freshly jailbroken and upgraded iDevice running iOS 4.3.1/4.3.2, which is likely the final release before the big 5 hits this summer.

With the first beta of iPhone OS 4.0 released just over a week ago, I think the hot topic topic for many has been the question of jailbreak. While there has not been any doubts that it would be jailbroken in the end (MuscleNerd showed off a jailbreak roughly a day after the initial release), I don’t think anyone actually expected a generally available jailbreak any time before the final summer release.

Guess what, there is one already! The Dev-Team have released a BETA version of their redsn0w 0.9.5 tool capable of jailbreaking an iPhone 3G. At the moment the package works on the following:

  • iPhone 3G only (for now)
  • Mac OSX only (for now)
  • the 4.0beta1 FW only (for now)

I have to make a special emphasis: the jailbreak is aimed at iPhone developers only and REQUIRES a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. For the same reasons it does not support Windows, unlock or hacktivation.

What do we, common users, care? Actually – a lot! The generally available jailbreak means developers can start adapting their jailbroken apps for the new OS immediately (rather than waiting for the official summer release) and should considerably shorten the time we will have to wait to get them fully working on our brand new JB OS 4.0 iPhones!

You can find the full Dev-Team explanation after the gap, as well as instructions on what to do in case you upgraded to OS 4.0 beta 01 already and wish to downgrade.

This is a beta release of redsn0w targeted at developers of jailbroken apps. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. Nothing new is revealed to Apple, and it’s not applicable to the iPad. Don’t go near it if you use yellowsn0w, ultrasn0w, or blacksn0w.

Please not that this beta is not meant for the average end-user. There are many things “broken” with jailbroken apps in the 4.0beta1 environment right now (that’s the real reason we showed “Veency” in the 4.0 jailbreak demo video last week, instead of say MobileTerminal.app, which is broken!). This beta redsn0w allows the developers behind those jailbroken apps (like MobileTerminal.app!) to fix their software before the general public gets iphoneOS 4.0.

Because it’s meant for JB app developers, this beta redsn0w does not perform hactivation. You’ll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. For similar reasons, there is no Windows version of this beta redsn0w (since apps are developed on MacOSX). Please don’t pirate Apple software.

Anyone other than developers of jailbroken apps porting their software to 4.0beta1 should still be using our previously-released redsn0ws for 3.0 through 3.1.3

This BETA release supports:

  • iPhone 3G only (for now)
  • Mac OSX only (for now)
  • the 4.0beta1 FW only (for now)

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That’s because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1 IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you’ve already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

If you’re a developer for jailbroken apps and you’ve already updated your iPhone3G to iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw, the next steps are:

  1. Make sure you’ve already activated your iPhone3G with iTunes and your developer UDID
  2. Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.5
  3. Select your stock iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw file (you’ve already used this to update your iPhone3G to 4.0beta1)
  4. Select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
  5. When your iPhone3G comes back up, you’ll notice Cydia has a blank white icon (we told you many things were broken right now!) You’ll also notice Cydia has no sources. Go to the Sources panel and add this repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 (be sure you have a carrier or wifi signal first!). When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now, and the standard sources should be ready to use.

If you find that you want to back down from the 4.0beta1 until it’s more useable, here’s how to do it.

  1. Restore to official 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. Your baseband won’t be downgraded, so you’ll get error 1015 at the end of the restore.
  2. Use rslite or irecovery to get past error 1015. Using rslite, you’d do:
    % rslite
rslite v0.2 - by the iPhone Dev Team, 2009.
    --THIS IS AN UNSUPPORTED TOOL--

    Connecting...
    [Recovery] setenv auto-boot true
    [Recovery] saveenv
    [Recovery] reboot

Your baseband will still be at 05.13 from the stock 4.0beta1, but FW 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 will work fine with it. The current carrier unlocks will not.

Please send any feedback to MuscleNerd (either gmail or iphone-dev.org).

Apple’s 3.1 Firmware broke compatibility with Redsn0w, meaning that your external GPS units, video cameras, and a whole fleet of other operations have been rendered unusable. However, the Dev Team are back at work and have released three tools which are available only for the iPhone 2G, 3G, and iPod touch 1G. It is important to note which you need and if your hardware is compatible. Their instructions are outlined after the gap.

The following is taken from the Dev Team’s blog:

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques (that complicate the 3GS upgrade process) this will be a multipart release. This release starts with PwnageTool 3.1 for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), the iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR 2G/3G IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.
If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.
This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

Baseband 101
The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 3.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G
This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 3.1 using iTunes and then use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to jailbreak your phone.

iPhone 2G (1st Generation)
Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything, the baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken.

iPod touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)
Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.

iPod touch 2G
Sorry, no support at this time within PwnageTool, use Redsn0w for an earlier (pre 3.1) firmware release instead.

iPod touch 3G (New iPod Touch)
Sorry, no support at this time within PwnageTool

For official files, again, please look at the Dev Team’s blog.

Also, feel free to check out our news section.

It took me some time to finally decide to jailbreak my iPod Touch and I am very satisfied with the result. Now, it is in my best interest (not really) to show you how I did it. If you are a member of the group of stubborn folks who refuses to place their “precious” in the hands of some software with names like “redsn0w”, “quickpwn”, or “ultrasn0w”, don’t let it deter you anymore, hesitant one! If I can do it, so can you!

What you’ll need:

  1. iPod Touch 2G with 3.0 firmware installed. Note: I specify this particular iPod model because that is the one I currently own, and since I’m no expert, I cannot guarantee success with an iPhone and other related models (though the process of Jailbreaking both iPhones and iPod Touches using redsn0w is very similar. Just be sure to have the corresponding firmware file for your iDevice)  Bear in mind: It is vitally important that you have 3.0 software installed. You can check by going to Settings>General>About>Version. According to what I’ve read, you can get the software for free. I know, I know. I spent the $10 bucks like you did on the first day it came out.
  2. Winrar (for those on Windows OS)
  3. RedSnow [Windows] [Mac]
  4. 3.0 firmware file (Note: ipod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw is the iPod Touch firmware file I used)
  5. A box of tissue for you to cry with in case your iPod is “bricked”.

Before I began the process of jailbreaking, I did some research and took some notes of what to do and what not to do. I came across two very good resources/guides that explained in detail, with the aid of some visuals, the proper jailbreaking techniques. The first is a Youtube video and the other is posted on a forum. What I’ll be telling you will be a simple summary of everything that is explained there. So, let’s begin.

Procedure

ipod_jailbreak_11. With the appropriate items listed above, you can now begin by opening up the redsnOw-win_0.8.zip folder. It should look like image #1 above.

ipod_jailbreak_2

2. Next, double-click on the redsnOw.exe file and there should be a series of load bars popping up randomly and then you should see a new window popping up

ipod_jailbreak_33. Click Browse and locate the aforementioned ipod 3.0 firmware (#3) (Note: You can drag the iPod firmware file to your desktop to make it easier for you to locate). Select it, and you should see :

ipod_jailbreak_44. Only select “Install Cydia.” Click on Next.

ipod_jailbreak_55. Important step: Plug your iPod to your computer and then turn it off.

ipod_jailbreak_6

6. More Important: The toughest stage of all. During this next step you must convert your ipod to DFU mode. Because the steps will be presented to you rather quickly, I will show it to you here so that you will be prepared beforehand.

7. First, hold down the Power button for 3 seconds (#6).

ipod_jailbreak_78. Second, without releasing the Power button, press and hold the Home button for 10 seconds (#7).

ipod_jailbreak_89. Lastly, release your finger from the power button but keep holding onto the Home button for another 30 seconds (#8).

ipod_jailbreak_910. Important: The window will begin to change and a series of loading screens will appear (#9). Remember, you must keep your finger pressed onto the Home button for thirty seconds. Try counting in your head or out loud.

11. Your iPod screen will turn black, then white, and then eventually it will show a screen with the message “Downloading Jailbreak Data” and what appears to be a picture of a hard drive with an arrow pointing downwards (Shrug).

12. During this crucial stage in the procedure in my experience, redsnOw crashed and I was forced to end the jailbreak. Don’t fret! I believe the remedy to this problem is to try again at a later time or to unplug your ipod from your computer and then plugging it back in to start all over.

ipod_jailbreak_1013. If nothing “wrong” happens at this stage, your iPod should then change screens to a picture of a walking pineapple with a loading bar on the bottom (Picture on top). Eventually you will reach to coveted and final last screen (#10).

ipod_jailbreak_11Before you turn on your iPod for the first time, I MUST remind you to try to not drool on yourself. I know it’s hard to resist but, try not to humiliate yourself once in a while. What you’ll notice hopefully is the presence of a new application sitting in your springboard. No, it is not a virus. It’s an application called Cydia, and it is like the App Store for applications that weren’t approved by Apple. My first impressions with it (Cydia) was how much slower it ran and the frequent load screens. But who cares now really? Especially since you can now download an abundant store of new apps that allow you to customize your iPod like you never possible! Give yourself a pat on the back. You deserve it.

This Jailbreak guide was brought to you by TouchMyApps contributor LonePlacebo. LonePlacebo also writes for his own blog, which you can check out right here.

No reason to be long-winded with this one: my words will go one ear and out t’ other. The iPhone Dev Team have just released their new OS 3.0 hack-able software. However, it is recommended to know what service you need before delving into the convolutions of an unlock. Read the information after the jump very carefully and follow the team’s website before you make any rash decision as the unlock will currently render your non-kosher carrier service useless.

Important Information from the iPhone Dev Team’s Website
This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.0 firmware from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of some bugs and unexpected changes this will be a multipart release, starting with the release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X. QuickPwn for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime soon, please don’t bug us about it, we are working flat out to get everything finished to release them.

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.
Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you can get it via Cydia or Icy).

redsn0w beta jailbreak for the iPod Touch 2G is now available for those who don’t mind a bit of typing. One step closer to point and click GUI hacking, the iPhone Dev Team are making leaps and bounds progress on this platform that has been comparatively sidelined from the jailbreak scene. With promise of future GUI jailbreaks just down the track, the Dev Team race on.

Those who are not comfortable with command line interfaces should probably stay away, but redsn0w really is a simple hack with only the following commands in their txt file.

In versions of OS X above 10.5.6, DFU mode has been disabled by a bug in the
operating system that Apple has not yet seen fit to fix. A work-around for
this problem is connecting the iPod through a powered USB hub rather than
directly through the computer. It’s also possible to use a software hack to
temporarily fix this problem to use this software. Please see the blog post at
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/74278878/close-the-stable-door for more
details.

1. Either connect the iPod in DFU mode to the computer
OR
Follow the step-by-step DFU instructions with the program
2. Start Terminal (in the Utilities folder under Applications)
3. Type ‘cd ‘ (cd space)
4. Drag the redsn0w folder into the Terminal window
5. Push enter
6. Type ‘./redsn0w’ and push enter

Those of you who are stuck on Windows or tough it out on Linux should have it no more difficult. If you are daring and have need of a Jailbreaked iPod Touch, have at it – unbridled functionality awaits your shiny device.
