At a time when home computers had less memory than the average modern video card, “sprawling” CRPGs consisted of randomly generated dungeons rendered with standard characters from your typical keyboard.  The challenge came from a combination of a myriad of commands to learn and the fact that once you died your save game was deleted – there were no second chances here.  The leader of the pack at one time was Rogue, hence the modern label “rogue like game”.  While I still enjoy some of the concepts behind the generic dungeon crawling, I never was good at remembering all the keystrokes.  That’s where modern interpretations like Sword of Fargoal come in.

Tiny Wings in Review – I dreamed I could fly…

With all the major (hardcore) releases lately from big publishers, it’s easy to forget that not everybody looks for something that complicated in terms of gameplay on the iOS. While creating a runaway hit game that is wholeheartedly embraced by the masses is often difficult to achieve, the ones that do become a screaming success, like Doodle Jump or Cut the Rope. And almost out of the blue, a new star has risen on the horizon with the simple name – Tiny Wings.

Pictureka! in Review – Can You See Me Now?

This game is insane, and of course I mean that in a good way.  Just listen to the different sounds that you can assign to your profile and you’ll quickly realize that the people who put this together had a lot of fun doing it and wanted to share that fun with us.  Pictureka! is based off of a board game, and after spending some time playing the electronic version I can definitely imagine that given the right group of people this would make a great party game.  If you’re looking for a “hidden object” game that offers something completely different, a great family game, or simply something that will both entertain and drive you nuts at the same time, Pictureka is your game.

Not sure how many of our readers remember the Choose Your Own Adventure-type books, but I certainly have fond memories of them. Leveraging the power of imagination back when a computer would take up about a football stadium just to match the processing power of the current iPhone, they provided hours of fun and enjoyment for kids all around the world. And the fact that this seemingly obsolete genre has found a home on the iDevice warms my heart and fills my soul with optimism. Especially with the release of fresh and original titles developed specifically for the iOS, like the latest creation by Tin Man Games – Gamebook Adventures 4: Revenant Rising.

When Hysteria Project (TMA Review) appeared on the App Store back in 2009, it created quite a buzz. As one of the few interactive movies on the platform and the first originally created for the iDevice, it offered a unique experience, both technically and in terms of gameplay. Putting you in the shoes of a careless victim desperately trying to escape the hooded maniac that seems to be in multiple places at the same time, it was a revelation for many thrill seekers on the iOS.
