Orions 2 in Review – The deck masters are back with a vengeance!

Back in my university days, I used to be a huge fan of Magic The Gathering, probably the most well-known and successful Collectable Card Game ever. It always provided an excellent way to pass the time during those boring lectures and it was something to do in-between them as well. I have abandoned it since, unfortunately, mainly because of lack of time. But it seems the iOS is likely to change that, with some superb CCG type games appearing on the platform the last few months. The most recent of which is actually a sequel to a rather successful iOS release from a couple of years ago — Orions: Legend Of Wizards (TMA Review) — and is rather unimaginably titled Orions 2.

X-Men in Review – 18 Years And Worth The Wait

I have to admit that I thought the X-Men arcade game came out before 1992, but apparently my memory is already starting to fail me (I thought this mainly because I didn’t think I frequented arcades so much when I was in college).  Whatever the case, I played this game any chance I got, and I always longed for a nice home version – or any home version – to be released.  Alas, it wasn’t meant to happen until 18 years later when the game arrived on XBLA and PSN, neither of which I had access to.  Finally, however, Konami must have caught drift of how badly I wanted this game, and they released an iOS port of the arcade classic.  It was so totally worth the wait.

Diversion in Review – A Name Never Said So Much

Few games are named as appropriately as Diversion.  You’ll flip through your library of games, stop on this one, then say to yourself, “am I really going to play THAT one again?”  Then you’ll load the game up, play it for half an hour or more and go “yeah, I really AM going to play that one again”.  It really is just another running game, but between new items being constantly added, the quest to gather gems, and the desire to grab three stars on every level, you’ll keep coming back for more.  Trust me – that’s what keeps happening to me.

Legendary Wars in Review – A legend remains victorious in spite of history

Casual games rule the App Store and it sure didn’t take long for them to invade one of the most popular genres for hardcore gamers – Strategy Games. This subgenre blending aspects of strategy and action first originated in the explosion of various office time-killers (aka Flash games) and finally found its way onto the iOS. And what’s more, it was given quite a warm welcome by the iPhone community, with some of the titles finding their way into the top of the charts. The latest such entry to emerge from the crowd is Legendary Wars, uniting all the best aspects of the many predecessors and bringing some new features of its own.

Supermarket Mania 2 in Review – Awesome Game On Isle 2

If I wished to stick with my analogy of Jane’s Zoo (TMA Review) being a Time Management Lite game, then Supermarket Mania 2 would be Time Management Deluxe.  While I love TM games I’m no expert at them, yet this is the first one in a long time that I’ve not been able to attain the expert level the first time around an almost any level.  For those of you wondering – that’s a good thing.  Usually time management game levels don’t take long to complete, and I don’t mind playing them 2 or 3 times to achieve the top ranking.  Add to that all the little bells and whistles, and this is probably one of the best games in the genre to grace my iPod Touch’s little screen.

Gears in Review – Rollin’, Rollin’, Rollin’…

I’m sure many of you were like me and grew up with one of the greatest marble / ball rolling games ever, Marble Madness.  When I got my first iPod Touch there was no sign of Marble Madness, but I did pick up an interesting variant called HydroTilt.  This made me even more anxious for my childhood video game friend.  I’m still waiting for Marble Madness, but after spending some time with Gears that desire has been greatly subdued.  Granted Gears doesn’t have some of the features like enemies that are out to get you, but what it does have is quite an experience indeed.

Death Rally in Review – So, where’s the ammo?

Few titles have left me with more fond memories than the good old Death Track – one of the first racing/shooting games ever. Unsurprisingly its top-down remake in the late 90s -Death Rally – immediately became my favourite pastime for hours on end. So when I heard that Remedy was bringing this classic to the iDevice, I was thrilled beyond imagination. My only concern was how Death Rally would transfer to the touchscreen.

Time Geeks: Find All! in Review – I Knew I Was A Geek

I think Where’s Waldo was probably the original hidden object game, except that you only had one object to find.  Since the developers labeled Time Geeks as a “seek & find” I was expecting something more like what you’d download from these bargain software internet web sites, but it turns out the game pays a nice homage to the spirit of Waldo instead.  In fact, I think it’s more fun than any Where’s Waldo type game I’ve played in the past.  Of course that could have a lot to do with the visuals, but that will come in due time.

City of Secrets in Review – Comrade Moles and Commandante Rex reporting for duty

Every so often, a top-notch title springs up out of the blue. Late 2009 one such game was Call of Duty: Zombies (TMA Review); in 2010 we had a number of surprise releases, and now in 2011, that distinction belongs to City of Secrets. This superb adventure game featuring the famous duo – Rex and Moles the Mole – has been waltzing across European TV shows for years and recently picked the iOS as their foothold for global stardom.

Tapper World Tour in Review – Serving booze can be almost as fun as drinking…

The moment I heard that Tapper World Tour was coming to the iOS, I was flooded with fond memories of my early days. And by “early” I do mean – about 3-4 years old. My dad built our first computer (I think it was some kind of Soviet Amiga clone or something) literally from scratch and I was lucky to be introduced to the IT world at such a young age. All of that is water under the bridge now, of course, but Tapper was one of the first games I laid my little hands on all those years ago. You can just imagine how the modern reboot of this famous franchise makes me feel…
