Regardless of my complete lack of adoration for Flash-based games, it wouldn’t be fair to say nothing good has ever come out of them. Even more so, a few Flash titles have enjoyed release as standalone products over the years and have gained immense popularity. And no, I’m not talking about those millions of casual time-wasters. I’m talking about the unique masterpieces by Amanita Design – Samorost 1 and 2, which paved the way for the genius Machinarium. Well guess what? The latter has finally found its way onto the iOS as an iPad 2 exclusive.
I think Crazy Escape is an extremely appropriate name for this latest puzzle game from Bulkypix. Thankfully, crazy isn’t always a bad thing. Your quest to help two penguins rescue a bunch of sheep will take you through some pretty zany shenanigans, and I wouldn’t expect you to get through the game without chuckling a time or two at least. It’s nice to know that the line drawing technique can be used for things besides simple war games and millions of Harbor Master clones.
There are a lot of puzzle games on the App Store, and Chillingo is certainly no stranger to the genre as a publisher. Every once in a while, however, a puzzle game comes along that screams “look at me I’m different than the rest”. Each level has three glowing orbs to collect and a goal to reach, reminiscent of just about any puzzle game that exists any more. The ground can be manipulated ala Bumpy Road, there are organic rope-like things to swing on, and the list goes on of elements that are like other games. However, I would be willing to bet that you couldn’t name one single game that Contre Jour is patterned after, and in a day where one application market alone can house several hundred thousand games, that’s about as unique as you’re going to get.
Hey look, another physics game with a cute protagonist. It doesn’t take long before you realize that Burn The City is a far cry from your Angry Birds or Cut The Rope, however (the name should be the first clue). This game is just as amusing as those other offerings, and sometimes a bit more satisfying. Unfortunately it has a couple of quirks that keep it from being top notch: the scoring system is way out of whack, and the second scenario has been “coming soon” ever since I got the game. Sometimes the hardest part of getting your hands on an eagerly anticipated release is the waiting. Ever since the original 1112 episode 01 first saw the light of day, I have been leaving scratch marks on my wall just like a prisoner on death roll to help pass the time. 1112 episode 02 (TMA Review) fully met my expectations and holds the crown as the top first-person adventure in our App Store’s Best Adventure. You can guess how I felt about part 3 of the series. Well, after a long one and a half years of waiting the story finally continues in 1112 episode 03/HD and I can tell you right now – it was well worth the wait!
If you’re looking for an action / puzzle game that is different than anything you currently have on your iDevice, look no further than Gravity Chain. I was a bit skeptical at first, especially since the screen shots didn’t really draw me in. Once I started playing, however, I realized this was the real deal. Unfortunately, its unique selling point is also its most frustrating, so it’s a bit of a give and take situation. Still, if you can learn to overcome the temperamental controls (or just resolve to deal with them), Gravity Chain will provide you with plenty of challenging and often hair pulling fun. This is part two of the adaptation of the classic Benoit Sokal adventure – Paradise aka Last King of Africa (TMA Review). On to Maurania once again!
When Cut the Rope (TMA Review) was first released in late 2010, it was simply out of this world, if only because Angry Birds finally had its hegemony challenged. And the game wasn’t all that bad either. Of course it couldn’t help but inspire competition; some have been downright clones, while others were of the more creative variety. The latter has just spawned an interesting concept, something like an anti-cut the rope in Save Yammi.
I’m generally not a big fan of the puzzle platform genre; it just feels somewhat outdated to me as a concept. I understand the nostalgia that powers a lot of the sales behind it, but am an alien to it myself. The truth is – almost everything that could have been dreamed up, already has been. Or so I thought before trying out Cavorite, a recent addition to the App Store with a unique concept wrapped beneath seemingly traditional graphics.
The extremely low entry barrier onto the iOS development scene ($99 and a Mac) is both a blessing and a curse for a number of reasons. On one hand it allows indie developers with original ideas to make a grab for the proverbial “millions”. On the other, a significant chunk of the 300K+ of apps on the App Store are complete and utter crap. That’s why sites like TMA exist – to sort through the dung to find the gold. Unfortunately, Cryptic Keep is not shiny…
