The Android Marketplace cracked

The Android Marketplace has real success stories such as Aaron La’s Advanced Task Manager; its open slant gives opportunity to many developers who can’t afford a Mac to join a huge market place. Every day, Android grows, and barring the all-out success of Windows Phone 7, it is destined to remain at the top, at least as market share leader. But, all is not well.

According to the Reg, Google’s hands-off approach allows its Marketplace to drown in oceans of porn just as the App Store was chocked by useless apps (fart and flashlight) in its early days. There is another negative effect: piracy. Despite the fact that the average selling price for Android apps is less than their iPhone, developers are strangled by app pilfering. The net result is that 49% of Android developers are making less than they expected and only 27% making more than they expected. Again, there is no question that Android is the market leader. For developers, it is an attractive platform. But it isn’t the heaven and spice that disgruntled iPhone developers may think it is. Google needs to adapt to keep its most important customer, the developer, happy. Happy, loaded developers make great apps. Currently iPhone Development, while a lot more controlled, has a friendlier, more lucrative face; it also tends to sport much more high quality apps.

For some time now, the App Store has been getting press due to the fact that there is no pornographic material on sale. Apps which manage to slip through, whether it be by pulling the wool over Apple’s eyes – or for some other reason – have been removed. I, however, may have the answer – for some of you, at least.

As an iPhone owner and avid reader – I started experimenting with reading books and stories on my device. Naturally, I coupled this with my love of reading and writing erotica. Therefore, I discovered it’s actually very easy to get some smut onto your iPhone, and it’s all perfectly sanctioned.

First and foremost, snag yourself an eBook reader. A PDF reader is all well and good, but because many books aren’t necessarily optimised to be read on such a small screen you may find yourself having to zoom into the text then swipe from side to side just to read single lines of text. It’s not ideal, and I quickly abandoned this.

One suggestion for an App is eBooks by Kobo. The App itself is free and you purchase books directly from Kobo. There are also lots of freebies available, so you can try them out for yourself before deciding whether you want to part with any cash. The only downside to this is you can only read books in the App which you have purchased from Kobo – so no importing previously owned books.

Another, perhaps more obvious suggestion is Amazon’s Kindle, another excellent and free app. You do, however, have the same problem as with Kobo. If you’re purchasing Kindle books, it’s fine. The service utilises something called Whispernet, so if you want to read the same books on your iPhone and you also own a Kindle, it’ll sync between the two machines, saving your page and everything: it is ingenious. However, on the iPhone version of Kindle, you can’t import books not purchased from Amazon Kindle, which is a bit of a bummer. If you’ve splashed out on the dedicated machine, you are given a Kindle email address so you can send various documents to it to read. Not so on the iPhone version. I guess it’s their way of trying to upsell people.

Now, both of the above apps are great ereaders, and they have a wide variety of erotica available, and some of it is very competitively priced. If you look around, you’ll even be able to snag yourself some freebies. However, other than the downsides I’ve already mentioned – there’s another. The Amazon Kindle site is currently very US-centric. So if you’re not residing in the States and you have a problem with doing your shopping in US dollars, you’ve got a problem. If not, however – knock yourself out! You may also find that some books are not licensed to be sold to the country you reside in.

As well as accessing books through third party ereaders, you can also purchase books directly through the App Store. Doing a search for erotica brings up endless material which you can purchase for your entertainment. However, just to narrow it down for you, keep your eyes peeled for Andrews UK Ltd, who are the company which put Xcite Books’ titles onto the iPhone. I’ve actually had stories appear in several of their anthologies, and I also review regularly for them, so can vouch for the quality. The Apps are well designed for purpose, with nice large text and no need to keep scrolling around the page to read. Again, the titles are competitively priced, usually a fair bit cheaper than the paperback version.

So – there you have it. A legitimate way to have something hot and sexy on your iPhone, without breaking any Applaws. Like me, you’ll probably find yourself with all three of the above options on your device, as well as purchasing another App which does allow you to import other PDFs and display them in an easy to read way.

Another added bonus to having erotic ebooks on your device is the fact that you can read them anywhere, anytime. No front cover means no embarrassment, and you don’t have to worry about hiding them under your bed! So go on, give it a try – and if you find that perfect ereading App for importing existing books – please let me know!

forChan was nothing more than an image browser. Point and click it to an URL and oila!, images pop up. Though cute dogs are included in the app, after a little cut and pasting, you can have full-blown prawns swimming on your iDevice. But sometime in the last few hours, Apple removed it from the App Store after approving in a nearly record-time of only 12 hours (cheeky bastards). This was bound to happen, but as Gizmodo pointed out, Apple have set a dangerous precedent: forChan is just a browser. Safari, too, is just a browser.

Whether you are a prawn fan or not, Apple need to get the message that their rub and tug tactics are tiringly sick. Apple, Safari is nothing more than a browser. It also has fewer limits for prawning it up than forChan did. Serious skin fans can have a lot more fun with YOUR APP than with any App Store software.

Cute puppies, eh? That is what the world will be saying in defence of  forChan, the new app which has a little more under the bonnet than a few cuddly wan-chans. iHustleApps little app is stealth porn; it has made it well under Apple’s surface-to-unfair missile radar and was approved in under 12 hours. But forChan is more than just another break, it is a breakthrough in the world of iDevice porn.

forChan iHustleApps, forChan – $0.99 RIP

Sad news prawnies – Apple have pulled forChan from the App Store. Safari next?

pics and more after the gappy:

In its description, forChan mentions that ‘UNRESTRICTED’ and ‘UNCENSORED’ content is viewable, but at its core, it is just an image viewer. Users who pay the 1$ needed for entrance get far less than either of the two bolded words. Gizmodo points out that the app itself is ‘innocuous’, rendering nothing worse than the hairy bodies of puppies. That is, until you change the URL which the app points to, there isn’t nothing dirtier than flea bags in the app. But with a few taps and a bit of searching later, and forChan transforms dogs into man’s best friend.

Giz also rightly point out that Safari, which is built into every iDevice, does exactly that. forChan is just a cute way to get there for 99 cents. If Apple pull the plug on forChan, they will have to face the facts: it is just a browser as much as Safari is just a browser.

Keep on eye on this one.

(Pun alert!) It’s been a long time coming, but Playboy and Apple have laid down the latex armour and rubber weapons in the release of an official 17+ Playboy app. For fans of the magazine, there is a lot of digital content to love, but iDevice Playboy isn’t quite as much of a so-called “hands-on” experience as its print version. Apple don’t allow nudity – though there are official ways to get it – so Hef’s software is rather an advert for the risque publication. And, in the spirit of subscript, Playboy comes at 1.99$, featuring November and December; but subsequent months require a payment of 1.99$ per. The price may be worth it however, as users get a grab at advice from their favourite celebs and bunnies covering anything from cars to stereos and sex advice. Imagine that, sex advice from a bunny…

When I decried Apple’s wishy washy stance toward iPhone porn, I was on to something. iPhone porn viewing won’t magically disappear because of a lack of official support. And with the constant rise of internet pornography, malicious sites are taking advantage of unwary users. So, rather than avoiding the issue of sex, why not commercialise a safe, phishing-free app or suite of apps for porn users? It has been a long time coming (pun?), but thanks to Sexapp Shop and the Premier App Shop, now there is a way. While not downloadable via iTunes or the App Store, Sexshop apps are real, legal apps which use “Apple-approved technology”, but the best bit is that from purchase to play, the process is discreet and mindful of the user’s privacy.

Screens and more info after the gap:

Sexapp Shop uses technology from the Premier App Shop which was created for professional magicians and entertainers and is fully Apple sanctioned. Content is bought from a central location and can be downloaded to the iDevice, or viewed online.

Users of Sexapp Shop get previews and can take advantage of trial software as well, but perhaps one of the most interesting features is the newspaper camouflage which employs the iDevice’s accelerometer to hide the app from prying eyes. When you are finished, Sexapp Shop apps can be deleted in the same way as any other app.

Safe, Legal and Discreet Store Offers Apps, Videos and Photos with Full Nudity from Huge Library of Content Including Major Studios and Labels

LAS VEGAS – Dec. 2, 2009 – iPhone users rejoice, now there really is “an app for that,” with the launch of the Sex App ShopTM available for download now on the iPhone and iPod touch. The Sex App ShopTM is available free at www.sexappshop.com and once downloaded, users can enjoy adult content from major labels and studios including apps, videos and still photos that can all be accessed anywhere, anytime. The world’s only legal app store alternative, the Sex App ShopTM is owned by Maria Gara, America’s sexiest magician, fire eater, snake handler and adult model.

“We wanted to create a store for all the iPhone users out there who have been looking for a secure, fast and legal way to view real adult content without jail-breaking or hacking their devices,” said Maria Gara, ‘The SnakeBabe’ and owner of Premier App Shop LLC. “Our apps are delivered over the air instantly without requiring an iTunes transaction.”

The Sex App ShopTM has partnerships with major studios, labels and distributors of adult content. Featured models include Penthouse Pets and stars seen in Playboy, Vivid, VCA, Wicked Pictures and New Sensation. Apps currently available from the Sex App ShopTM are 99 cents. Alternatively, a yearly membership is available for $99, giving users instant access to a library of more than 10,000 images for free. New apps are constantly added and the store’s library of content is growing daily.

The creators of the Sex App ShopTM have gone to great lengths to ensure users enjoy industry-leading privacy settings. For quick discretion, while browsing for viewing apps, users can simply tilt their device and a false newspaper quickly appears on the screen, disguising any app content. Credit card statements are billed as Premier App ShopTM, which is a fully-operational magic trick site, thus creating an innocuous decoy for snooping bosses or family members. The home screen icon can also be edited by the user to look like something inconspicuous. Additionally, there are no traces of adult content in the user’s browser, video player or photo viewer.

Sex apps are available with one-click access and don’t a need a Web connection to run, allowing for efficient offline viewing of apps, even in the most remote locations. For a more thorough shopping experience, the Sex App ShopTM features an intuitive overview screen where users can tap and enlarge images and a preview player to help make an informed buying decision. Once purchased, users can tap photos to navigate to the next or previous image or tap the logo to return to the overview. The autoplay feature cycles through the entire app and keeps playing until the user prompts it to stop.

At launch, the Sex App ShopTM will feature content for virtually every taste. With more than 30 categories currently available, users can choose from a screen full of different shops, depending on what they’re in the mood for that day. Once purchased the user owns the app and if ever lost can be re-downloaded for free.

A new app has raced into the App Store, driven by the famous race girl herself, Gyu-Ri Lee. Yup, she is a race-girl; you know, the type who at races waves the bits of cloth that should be covering her bits. The App Store has endured a virtual rainbow of borderline apps and currently, rushes to bolster its line by providing the discriminating pervert racially segregated fetish software. K-Girls is a suite of apps which retail for 1.99$ and caters to the bloke (or bloket) who cannot get enough of cute, pocketable Korean girls. By the way, she has 3 friends at the App Store.

Apple are constantly re-envisioning ways to cater to audiences all over the globe, yet maintain cute innocence in the face of subverted marketing practices. While their stance on pornography hasn’t changed (much) since the opening of the App Store, it is certainly throttling into new gears. If ‘real’, XXX pornography apps are wrong according to Apple’s unerring eyes, racial segregated fetish software is a kosher development in this Americanising globalising world.

When we reported on the first shameless soft-core porn, Pocket Girls, an app which exhibits Korean office girls in strange, often compromising positions, it wasn’t the app so much as the age requirement which surprised us. To Apple, spread-eagle, shower, and bed pictures are perfectly okay for a 12-year-old.

news-12yearoldporn-bed1

There's even a soft-core porn app for the 12 year old

Despite virtually supplying young kids with their first wet-dream, Apple have chosen to ignore the adult element: users who access pornography on their iPhones or Mac computers. Morals stances aside, Apple’s iPhone is a safe environment for p-addicts to entertain their desires with less risk of encountering phishing and malicious software. A boxed iPhone porn app has the potential to batten down porn’s leaky hatches.

But until Apple finds a happy medium; until they can firmly say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to pornography and related apps, the App Store will remain ambiguously susceptible to borderline apps and development houses – Apple will not remain in control of what goes in and out of its doors.

Controversy by the carriage full!

Apple execs will have their hands full when iPorn’s casually clad team — a professionally assertive group of five  – leg its way up to Apple HQ. The team have made the pilgrimage before, but Apple, staunch to the end, have until now maintained an aloof footing when regarding pornography on the iPhone.

While Apple’s mobile platform is innately hard to infect, Apple would rather users surf the ‘real internet’ in order to access porn – certainly a more dangerous routine. iPorn will be toyed with on the iPhone one way or another, but Apple’s official approval would push both the platform and its profits further into the black. Porn is, the biggest industry on any computing platform and Apple would be silly to ignore its presence on the iDevice.

Apple have made more than one spill: Check My Hottie (RIP), an app which allowed users to post pornographic images of both adults AND children went unchecked for a few days till Apple’s banhammer came down. The current balance is precariously stacked against iPorn, but its skilled debate team (pictured above and below) are unlikely to finish last in any encounter as long as they can squirm into Apple’s stuffy offices in a few weeks.

If it isn’t pornography, it will be another applicatioin which moves the line further away from Apple’s tight control. Censorship at app level has been a violent conflict since the App Store’s infant days, involving subversive apps such as alternatives to Safari and Mail. Eventually, Apple will have to make a move to shake its wishy-washy terms as business continues to grow.

In the meantime, I stand by my assertion that pornographic apps need to be allowed at the App Store if for no other reason than protecting users from often harmful websites, phishing, and malignant software: Nerd Porn – Protection is everything.

Whether or not teens are having sexual *********** or not isn’t important. Abstinence campaigners and Condom rights’ groups can debate that issue in a separate corner stocked with cooked stats. I’d rather flesh sex out from another angle: pornography’s rising per-capita market. Porn is taking over planet earth in part, thanks to the net. Just as the video store did to the radio store, internet porn may kill adult video houses. It’s easier to access, quicker, and easier to keep on the down-low.

Porn is practically everywhere on the internet – a fact which is likely not to change despite education, worried parents, or feigned self-control. Thanks to the internet, it is simply easier than ever to ‘happen upon’ porn; this fact unfortunately comes with one often largely overlooked side-effect: the startlingly high risk of disease transmission.

2009, December 4 update: Apple, partnered with Sexapp Shop and Premier App Shop have created a safer way for porn users to view porn. The fully sanctioned app store is accessed from the web and is detailed in this TouchMyApps article: Sexapp Store – Nerd Porn on the Go!

Just like unprotected sex, internet porn can lead to unwanted and dangerous baggage. Many porn sites are rampant with elaborate phishing schemes, trojans, and other forms of malignant code (Bill Mullin’s Weblog). But, unlike a child getting caught with her/his hands all over their parents’ flesh-zine stash, the demographic of at-risk individuals is much more staggering: nearly everyone has access to internet porn.

Back in the day, VHS won out over the superior BETA max due to its lower cost, and among other reasons, the support of pornography houses. Today, internet sex venues, pornography houses, and dedicated porn sites make a killing from online business. Let me phrase it another way: in 2006, worldwide Pornography raked in 97.6 billion dollars, had 4.2 million dedicated websites, and when combined with offline content and providers, earned larger revenues than Microsoft, Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo!, Apple, Netflix and EarthLink combined (TopTenReviews). All evidence point to the same trend continuing, and more than ever, internet pornography forging ahead.

However, internet pornography has already been established as risky. Your computer contains personal files, market habits – a digital duplicate of a person. Most systems are not set up to adequately protect their contents from the roving eyes of malignant software/scripts. This is where the iPhone becomes important.

Till now, many sites (TMA included), have lamented Apple’s approval process for a number of oddly lecherous applications. It is true, something needs to be done about the company’s ‘she loves me, she loves me not’ approval process, particularly when regarding pornography. However, the iPhone, a computing jail which runs apps within virtual sandboxes, is a rather safe venue for among other things, porn. I am not suggesting that everyone should use their iPhone for a little naughty peek and tug, but as internet pornography continues to rise in viewership and market dominance, so too will its other ill-tasting effects: virtual STD’s.

Whether pornography’s digital side-effects come from email, web sites, or downloads, the reason they hook victims is that sex not only sells, but it draws attention – a point on which Apple should ponder. Rather than fighting app developers who seek to make coin from a little hanky panky, Apple need to cooperate which what ultimately will be a lucrative draw for the App Store.

With better filters in place to sift out underage viewers, the iPhone could be a viable and safe porn outlet. Its secure sandbox file system is perfect to host dedicated apps which provide dynamic content. Of course, once porn is officially approved, the problem turns an app’s content. Apple would have to monitor the apps for illegal content such as child pornography. Though such an initiative would be time-consuming – particularly as porn apps could blossom left and right -, but necessary. The fact Apple need to face is that users want porn. Every app which has featured even the slightest bit of skin has been an instant hit, both in sales and in media flurry.

With the shrinking of the modern PC and preference by a growing number of people for ultra portable computers such as the iPhone, porn will continue to grow into such devices. It deserves a better plug that it gets now in an App Store which is one day lenient, the next day strict and forbidding. Properly harnessed, the iPhone could become the first true condom in the age of nerd-porn, a device which helps individuals engage in safe surfing, and ultimately, a stop-block for illegal content. It’s time for stodgy, conservative thinking to drop its pants and face the reality that mobile computing is coming of age.

In the past we have been up in arms about Apple’s selective app approval process, but this time, I think Apple have made a smart fiscal move in giving the thumbs up to Hottest Girls. Allen Leung’s app appeared, rose the ladder to the #2 spot and then in a puff of spray-on body-oil, limply disappeared. Rife with downloadable content, naked women and fetish genre’s, it was is a piece of App Store history as much as iBoobs was in its short life. Whether Hottest Girls’ disappearance was as Allen says, because of server overload or because Apple pulled the plug, we likely will not know till it is back up again or, there is an update. If Apple’s doing, it was a silly mistake: Hottest Girls has real potential as a money-making apparatus.

Pocket Girls made waves here because it was blatantly sexually exploitive AND approved for a 12 year-old audience. Hottest Girls’, however, is just a peak and porn app with a somewhat well-thought out audience of at least 17. While not hard core, it features nudity, some of which is full, fetish selections and downloadable content. At 1.99$, it saves a trip to the skin store or renewing your subscription somewhere naughty.

According to Allen, Hottest Girls will be back with full functionality. Indeed, with all the clawing back Apple have done (some good, but most bad), Mr. Leung’s press has to be very positive. His prior apps, Send Flowers and Elite Browser had obviously different markets in mind, but flowers, while nice, don’t rake in the dosh.

As his app was is a first for the App Store, Allen is assuredly sitting on a pile of history that stinks oddly like greenback dollars. If Apple really did pull the plug, they have sacrificed a lot of money as Hottest Girls is likely to stay steamy for a long time. Its analogue, Hottest Guys is still up, but it evidently caters to a smaller audience. Interestingly, Hottest guys, an app that shows good lookin’ hunks in their skimpies, jeans and ipods, was not edited by girls. The poor ladies get shafted again as in their stead, gay men did the selection of pictures.

If Allen’s app comes back in one piece when his server is put right, he will likely make history again by introducing the first male porn app in the App Store. This time though, will the ladies get to make selections or will men, yet again prove that porn just ain’t a women’s arena?

Krapps have an entire webpage dedicated to outing the naughty, crude, sloppy apps and Apple’s misfires. Every once in a while, TMA spots something ‘funny’ at the App Store. This time, that something comes in the shape of Pocket Girls, an app that is probably the most pornographic and blatantly exploitive at the App Store. Downloading Pocket Girls is contingent on several facts: you must own an iDevice, a credit card and you must be 12 years old. These ‘infrequent[ly]‘ sexually aimed pictures depict girls in poses that are only seen in peep shows and pornographic material. Apple have approved it rather quickly without finding much out about the dev, MSHOT, who if anything, are hard on about sexual exploitation. That said, Pocket Girls is the first, and most memorable among App Store soft-core porn apps.

According to the dev, Pocket girls features girls from ‘countries like Asia’ who doff their woohoo’s more than Sims3. Krapps explain Apple’s only real beef with nudity is the affected removal of undergraments. MSHOT help explain the situation however in their app description. Buying Pocket Girls helps them to ‘persuade’ girls to get into lingerie. According to Apple’s own OSX Dictionary.app, other words that could be used instead of persuade are: tempt, lure, cajole and twist someone’s arm.

I was just convinced that for this post to make sense, there needs to be illustration of the problem.

The approval process is obviously myopic and needs not only complete overhaul but clearly outlined agenda. In the meantime, 100%, honest-to-goodness porn apps have popped up thanks to the SexApp Shop. I want to reiterate in this article that TMA have no issue with Porn apps. Rather, the issue is that MSHOT set a precedent for other companies to follow. Firstly, they make no amends to hide the exploitive nature of their app. Still, very few children have credit cards. In the end, sexploitation, sexism, and related issues are not the realm of TMA. Apple really do need to check their policies. In the meantime, enjoy Pocket Girls.

The iDevice is perfect for porn. Apple should safely harness its capabilities to deliver safe, phishing-free software to customers. But, in the meantime, they need to remain aloof to sex issues. TMA has a lot to say about the issue:

I am not saying that you are or are not a spy. Or a shady dealer. Or a Paranoid-Linux user. And, I am not saying that I am or am not one of those mentioned, however I do take certain precautions with my surfing privacy which is something we should all think about.

Private Surfer is not a full stop protection agent, merely a private mode browsing module for Safari. Unfortunately, Apple did not included this mode into our lovely iPhone, so developer Justin D’Arcangelo felt the need to make a Private Browsing mode himself. If you have sensitive information that you don’t want to be sussed out by your mates who steal your iPhone – you know, like fantasy football scores and teams, your betting circles, your secret searches on how to get rid of your roomie – Private Surfer is a great way to protect your information.

From Justin’s Website:
Private Surfer can be used in place of Mobile Safari on your iPhone/iPod Touch when you have the occasion to visit a web site that you do not want to appear in your browsing history or address bar. Private Surfer works like regular Safari’s “Private Browsing” mode. No site data or cookies are left behind when the application is closed. The application’s icon and title are also kept discreet and access to the application can be kept secure with a password so that anyone else using your device will not be able to identify the application as an alternative browser. The application’s browser view can also be locked and sent back to the password-lock view with a single touch.
Features

No caching of any browsed content
No cookies stored from any visited sites
Customizable search engine (Google, Yahoo!, MSN Live, AOL Search and Ask)
Discreet application icon and title
Password-lock feature

It even protects it from you as Private Surfer will not remember where you surfed, nor will it remember addresses. It will not display title bars in Safari the way Mobile Safari does. It is a simple but secure one-off browser or a safe way to access that information in whatever media format it be at any time.

For those who frequently need this sort of access to internet, Private Surfer is a life-saver, but I imagine that most people will be happy with the regular Mobile Safari. I am glad that Justin brought us this functionality though I wish Apple had the foresight to embed such a practical mode within their own application. Is it fair that we have to pay 99 cents to get functionality that is in already included in real Safari that does real internet? No. But I am glad that we are being offered the chance to surf down a more anonymous avenue.

Private Surfer gets Grabbed by TouchMyApps.
