OnLive Desktop, brought to you the company that specializes in online game streaming to computers and mobile devices, is now available for the iPad as a free app. Similar to the recently released CloudOn app, OnLive Desktop not only brings Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to your tablet, but also a Windows 7 experience while away from your PC.
OnLive announced earlier yesterday that their cloud gaming service will be making its way onto the iOS and Android platforms in the US and UK. Millions of mobile users will soon be able to play console quality games over Wi-Fi and mobile networks on demand.
“Today marks a major milestone: OnLive is now delivering the latest, console-class, top-tier games—literally to your fingertips—on tablets and phones for instant, on-demand play anywhere, anytime,” said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO. “Through the free OnLive app, tablet and smartphone gamers can play top console and PC titles like Assassins Creed®: Revelations and L.A. Noire—one of the most highly acclaimed, graphically sophisticated games to date—with exclusive OnLive Cloud Touch controls or with the new mobile-compatible Universal OnLive Wireless Controller. Tablets and smartphones, the fastest-growing consumer product categories in history, are now capable of running the hottest, highest-end games. Gaming and mobile devices will never be the same.”
Aside from being able to play a number of games that have been adapted for full-screen control, OnLive will also be releasing the Universal OnLive Wireless Controller that connects to smartphones and tablets via bluetooth and WiFi. The OnLive app will be free to download (expected release is today, Dec 8th), and the games can be played either with a purchase or rental. We’ll update the post with a link once the app does become available on the App Store. In the meanwhile, take a look at IGN’s hands-on video below, along with the full press release.
