Best Buy Canada Reveals Fido/Rogers No-Contract Pricing for iPhone 3G S $699/$799

iphone3gs_noncon1As with anything, Canadians always seem to get shafted when it comes to getting the latest and greatest compared with our American neighborinos. Not only did we have to wait a year for the iPhone to arrive last June, but we also have to sign a bloody 3 year contract (as opposed to the 2 years on AT&T) just to be able to call the phone our own.  Well, according to The Boy Genious Report, the tides are indeed  turning as screenshots from Best Buy’s inventory clearly show Fido and Rogers selling both the 16GB and 32GB iPhone 3G S for $699/$799, respectively.

Now this is great news no doubt for those who prefer to avoid contracts like a bad case of  SARS and H1N1. But is $699 too much for the the latest ‘Jesus Phone’ commitment free ? Personally, 7 large ones isn’t nearly painful as the $1100 CAD I dropped on my Sony Erisson P910i a few years back, or the $1000 I paid for my first gen Compaq iPaq Pocket PC. Regardless, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of demand for these contract free bad boys. What do you think? Will you grab a no-contract iPhone? More inventory screenies after the break…

No Contract iPhone Available now in the Apple Store

nocontractiphoneAs we mentioned last week, this move was expected today, but not by Apple. If you amble on by the Apple store, you won’t have to already be an AT&T customer to pick up an iPhone, nor are you limited to one phone per customer as you are at AT&T.

Naturally, end-of-life for the 3G is rapidly approaching and Apple are eager to rid their shelves of these beauties. However, be prepared to shovel out 599$ for the 8GB model and 699$ for the 16GB badboy – me? I’ll be grabbing three of each on a run down to God’s Country over the weekend.

AppleInsider also report that the newly purchased iPhone can be activated via iTunes and that AT&T contract is still mandatory, but there are ways to get out of that.

Updated: No Commitment iPhone Coming to God’s Country? Yes

nocontractiphoneBoygenius, the ever rumouring website who brought us such ponderings as the 99 dollar iPhone are churning out some new butter. Apparently, they have received information that AT&T will be clearing iPhone inventory and to do so, will offer no-commitment iPhones. The 8GB phone will go for a measely 599$ while the larger 16GB phone will be available for 699$. In addition to being free from a money-grubbing AT&T contract, it  will not require activation but rather necessitate the purchaser to already be an AT&T customer.

What this means is that you can now woo that special someone with the purchase of an iPhone. Call it bride price if you will, but AT&T have only limited ways of ensuring sales go to prior AT&T customers so this ain’t no shotgun weddin’.

UPDATE: Next Thursday, the no commitment iPhone will go on sale at price points of 599$ and 699$ for the 8GB and 16GB respectively. Thanks for the update Yahoo! Finance. The down part? Those of you not on AT&T will either have to saw off your foot and pay contract ending fees or otherwise just pony up to AT&T for a contract. Well, at least you can get an iPhone without a contract… and then have to pay contract to use it… yay for freemarket economies!
