Several high profile titles have just seen an update on this fine April day. First and foremost – the ngmoco freemium Farmville-style sim game – We Rule has finally been updated with loads of long awaited interface and performance tweaks, as well as a the placeholder for new buildings. I have checked it out and the game has become much more user-friendly as well as a bit quicker on the uptake on the iPhone 3G. Get it now!

We Rule ngmoco, Inc., We Rule – Free

Second – the absolutely wonderful and horribly addicting Space Miner: Space Ore Bust (TMA Review) has just received a massive graphics update for the 3GS and iPod Touch 3G, a whole new license level with a bunch of new equipment, new alien tech and even a new UltracORE mode difficulty (beat the game with only ONE life). In the original review, I gave it a firm Kiss; now with the additional content and improved visuals for the latest iDevices, Space Miner gets even better and is totally worth the $4.99.

Space Miner: Space Ore Bust Venan Entertainment, Inc., Space Miner: Space Ore Bust – $4.99

And finally the amazing open-world space exploration/trading/action/tactics that hit the AppStore after more than a year in development – Warpgate – has already received an update. Miscellaneous bugs are fixed and Freeverse have added the much requested interactivity to space combat with tilt controls for movement and final-resort diversion of weapons power to shields. I am going to review it later today, but even without the update it is one of the best games I ever played on the iPhone and the improved combat system just patched the only real cons I was going to note in the review. Go get it – you won’t regret it! Or wait for my review :)

Warpgate Freeverse, Inc., Warpgate – $4.99

You can find the official list of improvements after the gap.

If there’s one genre of games that has gone through a gamut of change, it’s Tower Defense. Much like the variety of Super Mario Brothers games, there has been a gradual shift from 2D to 3D gameplay. Not content with just 3D graphics and gameplay, the most recent change in the Super Mario Brothers world has been the ability to fully explore a multitude of small planets in an amazing 3D experience. Star Defense represents this next stage in the evolution of TD games…one that breathes new life into a tried and true formula.

stardefense1With the thin veneer of a story (it’s more of a set-up of events), Star Defense places you at the helm of the S’rath onslaught. You are charged to keep the invasion at bay while survivors flee each world. While this may seem a bit on the pessimistic side (there’s no hope for victory… just the delaying of an inevitable defeat), the actual playing of this scenario makes for a great game.

Star Defense features:

  • Powerful Arsenal – Build your defenses from 5 tower types, that’s 15 different weapons each with unique attributes, firing ranges and reload frequencies.
  • Asynchronous Multiplayer Action – Battle friends over Twitter, Facebook and email. Search for #StarDefense on Twitter, check out other player’s scores then take them on!
  • Explore and Secure the Universe – Defend 7 breathtaking worlds, each with its own distinct path layout, weapon choices and enemy types with their own specific immunities.
  • Earn Medals and Commendations – Collect over 20 Medals and more than 30 Commendations by accomplishing specific feats on the field.
  • Breathtaking 3D Graphics – Stunning graphics and 3D worlds – this is tower defense like you’ve never seen it before!

stardefense2While some may feel that the whole 3D aspect of this game is all hype and no substance, I assure you that it is not. One thing this does is restrict your view of the battlefield. By limiting your viewing angle to approximately 1/6th of the actual battlefield, you need to be able to keep more of the world in your memory than if you were able to view all of it. Also, the enemy’s path follows the curvature of the planet, so determining the best places for the placement of the towers requires a little more thinking.

The result of this is that on later levels, you’ll find yourself rotating the planet, changing your viewing orientation, and keeping an eye out for all the invaders.

Thankfully, Star Defense makes good use of the natural touch gestures of the iPhone and iTouch. You can pinch in and out, scroll around, and even tilt. It all feels natural, and in playing the game, I’ve never once gave a second thought about the controls.

stardefense3Another innovative aspect of Star Defense is the medals and commendations section. This gives the game a sort of XBOX360/PS3 feel, and while gaining those doesn’t seem to affect the game (to my knowledge) it does add to the re-playability factor.

Unfortunately, though, besides the new twist in the gameplay and the challenges it brings, Star Defense (when compared to other great TD games) does find itself a bit lacking in certain areas.

First off, there are really only 5 weapons. Each weapon can be upgraded 3 times. While this is functional, and other TD games have done well with the same amount, the visual changes and tweaks in the power, range and speed feels a bit lackluster. There is almost a desire in me to say, “If you’re going all out with the 3D effect, then go all out with the guns and enemies as well.

stardefense4Another huge drawback is the lack of a fast-forward button. Seriously, they should make these things standard on all TD games. This issue is compounded by the fact that since the path winds around a 3D object, it is actually longer than it seems. So if you miss destroying one wave of the enemy, you have to significantly wait while the enemy makes its way across the other side of the planet.

One point of mixed contention is the multiplayer mode. In lieu of a local and global leaderboard, ngmoco and Rough Cookie have opted for Facebook/Twitter/email integration. While it may try to sell itself as a multiplayer experience, it is more like a social-network driven leaderboard. You can compete with friends to see who gets a higher score. This is all fine and good, but it is in a way just an another substitute for a leaderboard.

stardefense5With all the positives and negatives running throughout the game, it’s difficult to objectively grade Star Defense. On one hand, it is a truly innovative game that brings a new dimension to the TD genre. On the other hand, there are other TD games that are just more fun to play, but stick to the tried and true TD formula.

Yet, in the end… with so many TD games choking the market, I can easily say that there is no other TD game like this. It truly is unique in presentation and it incorporates a new concept into a tried and true genre and for that, I must give Star Defense a 4 out of 5. With a variety of tweaks and upgrades, though, Star Defense can become an amazing TD game.

When ngmoco announced Star Defense, a true-3D TD game to hit App Store shelves around June, an almost audible groan could be heard from many gaming fans who have tasted the best already and are wanting something different for dessert. Well, Star Defense is not just another TD, it is another TD that has enough new gameplay to warrant a new genre.

wordfu_1With all of the new word games saturating the AppStore, it’s becoming difficult to differentiate the good from the bad. When ngmoco:) announced they would be rolling out (no pun intended towards Rolando) a new word related game called Wordfu, I was sure it was going to be a true winner- and it is.

There are two main modes in Wordfu: Play and Versus. In play mode your objective is to choose 9 dice (you’re given exactly 20 seconds to make up your mind- the pressure is overwhelming!) and then you have to make as many words as you can using your desired letters. All the while you’ll hear some of the craziest sound effects for a word game ever. These sounds include such poetry as “hhhhiiiiiiyyyyyyaaaaa” and some painful groans as “guuuuuhhhhh”. I feel like I’m playing as the main character in one of those old- fashioned corny kung-fu movies in a battle of wits and words. The other gameplay mode aka Versus, pits you against a friend on the same WiFi network for the status of Supreme Wordmaster.

wordfu_4Wordfu sets itself apart from other word apps on the AppStore due to the unique power ups you can use as you rush to create as many words as possible. The three dice (powerups) are Freeze, Double Score, and the Flick To Change This Die. ‘Freeze’ literally freezes your entire gameboard in compelling blue ice. It essentially freezes your timer, thus giving you a couple extra seconds to get in any final words that you can think of. ‘Double Score’ makes the gameboard glow a fiery red and doubles the score of any words for a few seconds (words are ranked depending on their length and value). Last but not least is the Flick To Change This Die, which lets you get rid of any die that is giving you troubles by changing it to a another random letter.

wordfu_5Wordfu features some beautifully rendered 3D dice which uses Mach Dice technology (courtesy of Mach Kobayashi) to its full potential. All of the sound effects and music are top notch and add to the overall enjoyment of the game. If you’ve felt that you’re now truly a WordFu Black Belt Master then you can attempt to try out Shaolin Style mode (which can be turned on or off in the Options menu). Shaolin Style only allows you use each die once per word.

wordfu_3 wordfu_6

As with every other ngmoco:) game, Wordfu also comes sporting an Achievements list (under the Hall of Legend menu). Earn your belts as you accomplish tasks like achieve a 100 point round to strive for the Grand Master belt.

A couple quick tips when playing WordFu: choose one dice per letter (for example don’t choose multiple dice with the letter ‘A’ since you’re able to use each die more than once (unless in Shaolin Style mode). Also, if you’re not fond of shaking your iPod every time to submit a word- you can just tap the portion of the screen where the letters come up to submit the word.

wordfu_7 wordfu_8

Overall, Wordfu is a high quality word game and another big title to add to ngmoco:)’s arsenal of fun. I can’t really think of any complaints with WordFu other than to add new dictionaries in future updates (even though the Collins Scrabble Words 2nd Edition dictionary that’s included has an army of words) because some words I’ve attempted to submit were not accepted as real words. I would also love to see the ability to compete against random players over WiFi, and not only those on the same network.

If you have the slightest interest in words or are simply looking to expand your word game collection on your iPhone/iPod Touch, Wordfu should not be missed. Not only will you have loads of fun, but you’re bound to learn a new word or two on your journey towards verbal supremacy (thy name is Grand Master!).

Rolando was one of the first games to hit the iPhone/iPod Touch that I truly considered a defining game for the platform. Ngmoco, the company of Dr. Awesome and Rolando fame has just recently made one of their older titles free: Topple. This deceptively simple game has you stacking blocks in order to reach a given vertical goal. However the game’s difficulty ramps up in the form of more unusual shapes to stack that break the conventional variations of a square block and a more distorted foundation in which to start placing pieces upon. The resultant product is a highly addictive game which uses its whimsical charms to lure you in and its surprisingly deep gameplay to keep you coming back for more.

The presentation in Topple is excellent with an art style that is reminiscent of Cartoon Network’s “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends”. The aesthetic presented in the game comes to life within the blocks, backgrounds and music as you play the game. Blocks will grimace and express delight as they wobble and teeter on the playing field and as a result you can’t help but feel empathetic towards the tower you’ve made. Backgrounds reinforce the cartoon image having you build against backdrops of surrealistic places such as a winding cityscape or a deep forest. To complement this given art direction of the game, GroovyAudio has provided orchestral music that gives a lighter feel to the game and accents the personality already found within the game.

However Topple certainly has some substance to back up its good looks as you’ll have to use strategy to rise higher later within the game. Although the outset of the game is simple, in the levels later on within the game you may find yourself having to use the tilt system in order to compensate for your increasingly unstable structure as shown above. Creativity will also have to become a staple as you’ll have to find new and innovative ways to make your heart stop with blocks as your tower’s structural integrity is compromised just to gain those few extra feet.

Although Topple is an extremely solid game, it’s not without its few small flaws that detract from the experience. One flaw that rears its head can be found as you progress in building your tower higher, as blocks that are below or close to being cut out of view are frozen in place. As a result playing pieces that are below your current point of view cannot be affected by anything at all even with deliberate movement of the pieces. This ends up detracting from the possible larger scope of the game and removes the tension of building such a large structure.  The game is once again restricted but on a competitive level this time, as no online scoreboards are present to compare the height of your tower built in free mode against everyone else’s.

Don’t let these two flaws scare you away from downloading this game with its now non-existent price tag. Topple is an excellent distraction that will draw you away from real life and into the wonderful world of unstable architecture.

ngmoco:) has quickly become a developer many are keeping a close eye on for the iPhone. While they may not have released a bundle of games thus far, the ones that ngmoco have are both fun and unique in their own way (Topple, Dr. Awesome). With the recent release of Dropship, ngmoco has outdone themselves this time and quite possibly have put together the ultimate Arcade game that is as addictive as it is impressive.

Dropship is a retro Arcade Shooter inspired by titles like Thrust and Geometry wars. It excels not because of eye popping graphics, but rather for a superbly implemented control system and fun gameplay.

Welcome back Commander – Pilot your Dropship, power-up your weapons and penetrate enemy caverns destroying turrets, tanks & Interceptors as you fight to Evac your stranded allies and retrieve “the pod”. Effect your daring escape with your cargo in tow dodging enemy fire, homing missiles with your vector thrust powered super ship.

18 Available Campaign Levels and more challenging caverns

As the ‘Commander’, your main objective is to fly the Dropship through space caverns and locate the greenly lit ‘pod’. Along the way, picking up comrades will not only add to your score, but also upgrade your cannon’s firepower. Once you find the pod and hover close enough, your ship will automatically grapple the package and trigger a countdown.  Now you must race against the clock and backtrack your way through the same cavern, evading more enemies and skillfully flying around tight openings. The level is complete when you escape from the map along with the pod before time runs out.

Control your Dropship

Dropship’s control system is beautifully executed. Using your thumb to touch anywhere on the left part of the screen will trigger the navigation controls, while the right will fire your cannon. Very much like using a Playstation dual analog controller, you will be able to fly and fire just by rotating your thumbs in the desired direction. The best part is that you are not restricted to a set location for moving and firing. You decide where it is you want your controls to be. After even just a few minutes of piloting the dropship and testing out its 360 degree canon, I found it highly intuitive and also lots of fun.

The retro 3D environments of Dropship work very well. Everything about it has an old school feel and that’s a great thing. While the models were designed in 3D, you essentially only play it in 2D, thanks to a camera system that works wonderfully. As you navigate your way through treacherous caverns, the camera will pan in and out and tilt accordingly, giving you an optimal view of the action on hand.

Secured the package and hauling ass outta there!

The campaign mode has 18 levels that contain deeper and more challenging caverns as you progress. Since it can get pretty tough in later stages, the checkpoint system (which is activated upon securing the pod) is most welcome. So if you die while trying to evac, you won’t have to start all over again. Some of the larger maps will give you 3 minutes to escape with the package, while some will give you as little as 30 seconds.

Pedal to the Metal

Besides campaign mode, you will also find an addictive Freeplay Mode that will have you rescuing your allies instead of packages. The levels get progressively harder, with more crews to evac and tougher enemies to face. Once you lose though, its back to level 1. To round things off, there are even downloadable levels from ngmoco that you can play with. This is a very nice touch that will keep players coming back for even more Dropship action.

The Bottom Line: It has been a long time since I had this much fun with an action packed Arcade game. With a control system that works fluidly and gameplay that is both addictive and challenging, Dropship may very well be one of the best games out on the iPhone. All this for only $1.99? While I haven’t had a chance to play Dizzy Bee 2 just yet, I really enjoyed the first Dizzy Bee. It was well designed and not a game you can easily put down. Fans who loved the original will probably like this even more with new control settings, power ups, new Fruit Friends and a whole lot more!

Dizzy Bee is back in an all-new adventure. Meet baddies like you’ve never seen that will literally eat you up and spit you out! Can you help your Fruit Friends make their way through grinding gears, around sticky webs and past wild turrets? There are twice as many Fruit Friends as before for you to guide and protect. This time there are power ups to help you get back at those baddies! 2 Oceans, 8 islands plus 2 bonus islands, 2 difficulty levels, 8 Fruit Friends, power ups and a ton of baddies will keep you tilting and turning your iPhone or iPod Touch for hours!

New from Dizzy Bee:
Tons of new enemies.
More Fruit Friends.
Difficulty levels: Choose “Easy” and “Normal”
Nearly 90 levels including Easy variations and Bonus Stages.
Finer control. You can hold your iPod Touch/iPhone flat to move enemies and good guys with more precision. (No more “too flat” warnings!)
Power ups! Finally the good guys strike back.
New bonus level rules!
Additional time bonus scoring. Beat levels faster if you’d like some extra points.
Auto sleep function has been greatly improved.

With their highly anticipated release of Rolando just around the corner, ngmoco has given iPhone gamers another quality title in Dr. Awesome, Microsurgeon MD. Making use of the accelerometer, gamers are finally able to play Doctor on the iPhone. Starring as Dr. Awesome, your job is to save patients from a deadly outbreak by isolating and trapping an assortment of nasty viruses found within tissue cells.

The idea of containing objects and securing a majority of the playing field is nothing new (old school games Qix and Jezzball are prime examples), but ngmoco breathes new life to this type of play with a modern medical twist. Adding to the drama of Dr. Awesome is that names from your contact list are used as in-game patients. If you are not exactly comfortable with the idea of operating on your own girlfriend for instance, you can generate a random name or simply edit an existing one.

Why can't all nurses look like her?

Why can't all nurses look more like her?

For every patient, you will have to complete 3 stages of viral containtment before you are able to cure him/her . To do so, you must guide your surgical device by tilting your iPhone and cut off pieces of the cell. Cutting off a piece that contains a virus will also destroy them. When you have sliced away 75% of the cell or more before time runs out, you can move on to the next round of viruses. While this may sound easy, everytime a virus collides with your incision line or knife itself, time is subtracted from the clock.

Cutting a piece of cell

Virus won't survive much longer

Adding to the challenge will be the multiple types of viruses you will encounter. Some viruses crawl along the wall of the tissue (preventing you from camping out here too long to avoid the main floating viruses) and others will shoot nasty treats your way. Power ups will also aid you along the way, such as speed boosts, shrinking all viruses on screen and adding more precious time to the clock.

While the gameplay can be very addictive as you try and perfect your skill as a ‘surgeon’ and avoid viruses from every corner, the controls can be can be rather frustrating. There will be times when you can hardly see the action on the screen as you tilt the iPhone toward the ground in order to make a cut away from you. With a game that relies heavily on dodging viruses all over the screen, not being able to see it clearly when tilted at a certain angle can sure raise your blood pressure. An option to control the surgical device via the trace of your finger as opposed to just the tilt controls would have definitely been a welcome addition.

As Rob Schneider once said, "You can DO IT!"

Sure, Dr Awesome Microsurgeon MD may have its own problems (control issues, a lack of variation after saving tens of lives), but I still found the game to be a fun and challenging. The Phoenix Wright style artwork and overall presentation works like a charm. For $1.99, Dr. Awesome should keep you busy playing Doctor on your iPhone until ngmoco’s other title, Rolando, is finally released at the App Store.
