Needless to say, once the package arrived, I was expectantly ripping the plastic off of these “Mini Jet Engines” which stun even from the first glance.

After Jays released its dual micro balanced armature Q-Jays at $180 in late 2007, there was a big party. For the next few months everyone raved on and on about their unique design and sweet, neutral sound signature. About a year later, and in response to the Q-jays, Ultimate Ears released the UE700 that house, you’ve guessed it right … dual micro balanced armature drivers. The bottle shaped plastic UE phones come at a $50 premium to the q-Jays at $229.99, but how do they stack up the the cheaper Swedish earphones?

Does OS 3.0 improve the sound of the iDevice?

Among many hidden and official features of the new OS, there is speculation, hype and perhaps even a bit of placebo stirring among the enthusiastic audiophile crowd; apparently, the new OS has improved the sound of both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. I am a keen member of headfi, a great headphone-devoted forum where you can geek out with enthusiasts, trade, sell, barter, discuss and make noise about your favourite phones, amps and cables. Since 2004, I have been perusing heafi and since 2006, verbosely posting. In my short time, I have seen the coming and going of many hype threads and and others that are true treasues. As a portable audiophile, I am more than interested in claims that OS 3.0 improves iDevice sound quality.

Headphone Tidbits 29 May

For you hungry headphone-a-philes, keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming reviews. A high-end Westone UM3X has slipped in somehow which will be featured in an upcoming review, but this week’s will be the lovely looking and sounding Q-Jay from Jays of Sweden.

As many of you know, there is a massive headphone convention happening this weekend in California. CanJam will open its doors on Saturday to audiophiles from all over the world and feature all the big vendors that have made headlines in the hot, headphone world.

iPhone/iPod Touch Firmware 2.2.1 point release

Is it the release we are all hoping for or not?  Browser geeks are looking for Safari tweaks and upgrades and mail buffs are looking for many fixes including mail and pictures compatibility.  Hopefully those issues have been resolved as Apple have mentioned in the update log:

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:
- Improved general stability of Safari
- Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll

- iPhone
- iPhone 3G
