We’ve already seen some awesome App Store sales for the US Thanksgiving holiday seaon, but there are also a number of notable games that have gone free. 1112 episode 01, one of the first episodic adventure games exclusive to the iPhone, is now a freebie. The first person adventure featuring protagonist Louis Everett gets better and better, as evidenced by our reviews of 1112 episode 2 and ep 3. Also free are the popular tower defense games from Origin 8 - Sentinel: Mars Defense, Sentinel 2: Earth Defense and Space Station: Frontier, one of my favorite in the genre. The complete roundup can be found below, and don’t forget to check out other apps/games that have recently gone free.
Update: ** Denotes apps newly added to roundup.
Luminance - A well received photo editing app that allows you to easily add effects to your images. You can choose from a host of built-in presets, crop out unwanted areas, manipulate the order of edited layers to create unique effects and more. You can even copy edits made to one photo and apply them to others in your library to help save time. Luminance is universal, so it’s good to go on both the iPhone and iPad.
Kevin’s BREAK’EM - If you missed this one previously, Kevin’s Break’em is free once again to celebrate the upcoming release of the lite version. It’s essentially a breakout type game, though it sports some of the most unique visuals for the genre (graphics are rendered in 3D art). A second update coming next week will also pack an all-new game mode. If you like tilting your iPhone and bouncing balls off a paddle, grab it!
Topping Pro - A highly rated app that lets you create your own wallpapers without the need to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch. Choose from a bevy of professionally designed backgrounds, add “toppings” to customize your masterpiece and set them as wallpapers on your Home and/or Lock screens.
“Three for Free” is back and here are 3 apps/games that you can now download for free (for limited time):
AcePlayer - Much like the GoodPlayer (TMA Review) app, AcePlayer can play basically any video file format you throw at it (WMV, AVI, MKV, RMVB, RM, XVID, MP4, 3GP, MPG etc), meaning you no longer have to convert your movies and tv shows before uploading to your iDevice. The app has a built-in UPnP client so you can stream video from most UPnP/DLNA media servers.
Fragger - This casual catapult-type game is among the more popular titles on the iPhone and has been played on Miniclip.com as a free flash game over 100 million times. Simply use your finger to aim and launch grenades to kill all enemies throughout 340 levels and 11 different worlds. Game Center leaderboards lets you see just how good you are at tossing ‘em mini “pineapples”.
RuneMasterPuzzle - A fairly new and rather promising match 3 game, RuneMasterPuzzle allows blocks (or Rune Stones) to be swapped in 8 directions (horizontal, vertical, diagonal). The “Spirit” counter, which shows the number of total swaps remaining (it can be recharged), along with the various power ups and combo make this an intriguing prospect among the crowded match 3 genre.
Burn the Rope Worlds - The followup to the hit Burn the Rope, Worlds comes packed with 100 new levels, 4 themed worlds and an all-new Endless Burn mini-game. The premise: burn as much rope as you can, though the fire only burns upwards – meaning you’ll have to tilt & turn your iDevice around to keep the flame alive.
TrafficVille HD - Think Flight Control (Review) minus the planes and line drawing. Supposedly the first “traffic control” game for iOS, you must manage multiple lights and vehicles and ensure that the flow of traffic keeps humming along. It’s universal, so it can be enjoyed on both your iPhone and iPad.
XenoCube SD - A unique take on the Match 3 genre, it’s almost like you’re playing Bejeweled on a rubic’s cube. And being that the playground’s a cube, you can rotate it to make your matches (thus giving it a 3D feel to the game). Power ups, explosive effects and 5 game modes should excite all Match 3 fanatics.
In celebration of the launch of the International iPhoneography Show, MacPhun, makers of the fantastic FX Photo Studio (TMA Review), is offering Perfect Photo as a free download for the weekend. Perfect Photo is a highly capable and easy to use image editor for the iPhone/iPod Touch that’s been getting rave reviews from all around (current version has 4 1/2 stars from 540 ratings). The app features 28 essential tools that includes spot healing, saturation, colour balance and levels balance controls, as well as effects like vintage, pencil paint and posterize. While iOS 5 now allows you to do some basic photo editing, Perfect Photo will give you much more control for manipulating that image just the way you want it. If you make use of that i-camera even in the slightest, be sure to grab it before the week’s over.

We’ve reviewed a number of Breakout clones on the iPhone and one of our favourites so far is Anodia (TMA Review), a below-the-radar App Store release. Visually though, the recently released Kevin’s BREAK’EM is likely the most unique among the genre, featuring a refreshing 3D animated look.
Meet Kevin, the nutty new character in town. When the humans are gone it’s time to have fun! Come play with him and burn off some steam in this innovative fast paced tilt to win gameplay. With High Definition Graphics and slick tilt based controls, Kevin’s BREAK’EM can be one of you next addictive pocket friends.
Simply tilt to control Kevin and the china above while aiming for the marked dishes. Don’t hit the timers or lose the ball to score big time!
Now free for 24 hours, Kevin’s BREAK’EM is worth checking out, especially if you like the arkanoid/breakout style of play. Video trailer after this space.

Two fantastic iPhone games have gone free today. Polarbit’s Reckless Getaway (the “sequel” to Reckless Racing), my favourite pickup-and-play title on iOS this year, has you weaving in-and-out of traffic like a (mad) professional getaway driver. The superb graphics, tight controls, unlockable chapters and mindlessly fun gameplay make this one of the best iDevice games around. Just see for yourself why this one is so darn addictive.
Now a drastic change of pace – Puzzle Quest Chapter 1, has also dropped to free. The game that popularized match 3 style of play with RPG elements, Puzzle Quest had graced the Nintendo DS and PSP before making its appearance on the iPhone. Now that Chapter 1 is free, ch 2&3 can be unlocked for $0.99 each. If PQ tickles your fancy, be sure to check out Puzzle Quest 2 (TMA Review) as well.

Round 1 of the PGA TOUR Championship in Atlanta, GA got under way earlier today (Keegan Bradley’s leading by 2 strokes) and EA Mobile’s celebrating the event by dropping Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12 to free on both the iPhone and iPad. Having recently received a major update, PGA Tour 12 has been graced with improved gameplay performance and accuracy, the ability to earn free Pro Shop cash for playing the Closest to the Pin Challenge and much more.
