Remember when pinball arcades were king? You’d go to the local arcade and the moment you stepped inside you were transported to another world. Nothing before you but rows and rows of long shafted gaming nirvanas being pushed, pulled, and thrust into by young adolescent teens, all the while calling to you with the afterglow of their lights and the sweet purring sound of balls bouncing of flippers going for the score.
When asked to do a review of Smack Me, based on the apps name my initial thought was, “I hope this isn’t one of those apps where some ladies breasts are wobbling around the screen!” Jumped into the App Store and was surprised to find the app icon had a picture of an 80’s style robot (okay fine, I was somewhat disappointed there wasn’t any wobbling involved). After booting up the app and giving it a go, boy, was I surprised! What I discovered filled me with nostalgia and put a very happy grin on my face.
Let’s rewind to 1996 shall we? 12 years ago, I had an archaic Packard Bell Desktop Pentium that ran at a snail’s pace of only 75 MHz, but I played lots of games on it. One of those games was Wolfenstein 3D. This game was unlike any other PC game I had played before because it had this new gaming experience of first person perspective! Since the character in Wolfenstein had a gun, this became better known as FPS or First Person Shooter. I was instantly mesmerized by this graphic wonder of FPS!
Hailing from New Jersey, I have fond memories of going down the shore, stopping by the shops on the boardwalk, and playing all those lovely games. One of my favorite was actually skee ball. So it was much to my surprise when I first laid eyes on 10 Balls 7 Cups, and much more to my surprise when I discovered just how good of a game it was.
iWire has just three rules: You MUST talk about the wire. Tilt left & right to move. DON’T touch the wire! These are the words you get upon opening up the application. Origin8 produced an extremely simple yet addicting game, and once again, provides an excellent layer of polish.
When I think of WW2 games, I think of the usual shoot-em-ups that are constantly getting released for platforms. Whether it be for the Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii, the idea just seems overplayed to me at this point. But, GI Joyride (developed by Trapdoor) takes a completely different approach to war-style games by putting you in charge of an APC (Armored Personal Carrier) to thrash through enemy territory.
HyperDevbox Japan smash through the boundaries of many gamer’s wildest dreams with ExZeus. Not only do they bring to the iDevice giant robots and big guns, but ExZeus, a coinop arcade game now fits into the greasy pockets of iPhone and iPod Touch gamers everywhere.
Hyperdevbox sport an impressive catalogue of games for PS2, Wii and xBox 360 as well as with the debut of ExZeus, an upcoming ports section for handheld gaming machines. ExZeus is a great achievement as a first handheld port and I hope will is indicative of the quality of games that are in the production queue. Though excellent, ExZeus is hampered not by its content but by hardware limitations in the iDevice.
I was browsing the iTunes App Store one day, and I suddenly came across this app; I read the description in iTunes and I was very intrigued by the purpose of Pocket God. I initially though that this game is very similar to The Sims or others in the genre, but it turns out to be an entirely different type of game. Whatever caused me to download this game I have no regret in doing so.
