Exclusive preview: 1112 Episode 02 – Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better…

A little over a year ago, while the App Store was void of even a single decent quality adventure game, a small independent developer called Agharta Studio released 1112 episode 01– the first adventure game to be exclusively developed from the ground up for the iPhone. The project came to fruition through the hard work of a small team led by Alexandre Leboucher and got high praise from critics all across the board (including an honorable mention in our The App Store’s Best Adventure). It was stylish, beautifully drawn and had an original storyline and puzzles to back it all up.

Despite the original promise of a sequel in about 4 month’s time, the team decided to take a little detour to make the excellent Rogue Planet, which messed up the schedule somewhat. Fastforward to April 20, 2010 – Alexandre has just informed me that the long awaited sequel has finally been submitted to Apple and graciously allowed me to take a full hands-on go with 1112 Episode 02. And here’s how it looks.

Tired of waiting for 1112 Episode 2? Time to break into the devs house!

Update: Check out our Exclusive hands-on preview of 1112 Ep. 2!!

1112 Episode 01 was the App Store’s first adventure game, one exclusively designed and developed for the iPhone a year ago by Agharta Studio. It was highly acclaimed by the critics and earned a well deserved spot in our App Store’s Best Adventure Games. Unfortunately since then the developers took a little detour and released the excellent turn-based strategy – Rogue Planet, which delayed the intended release of 1112 Episode 02.

The good news though is that the game is almost finished and in the final stages of beta-testing. But it seems some people just don’t have the patience!  A fan of the original game, through some covert means of her own, found the home address of the lead developer Alexandre Leboucher (whom we incidentally interviewed several months ago) and stole his personal iPhone to check out the game. And what’s more – she even videotaped all of it. Video after the gap!

Nostradamus: The Last Prophecy – Predicting the future on your iPhone – coming soon!

Adventure fans – rejoice! I’ve just got word from Tetraedge Games (working under the patronage of Anuman Interactive) that they are putting the finishing touches on the last episode of Dracula: The Path Of The Dragon and the recently exclusively previewed The Egyptian Prophecy and are planning to send them to Apple for review soon. But that’s not all. Following these stunning releases they are going to start working on Nostradamus: The Last Prophecy – a very promising title, one that ranks at a formidable 70% on Metacritic.

The game centers around the mysterious series of murders in the late 16th century. The Queen, desperate to solve the brutal killings asks the famous astrologer for help. And while the prophet himself is too old to get to the bottom of things first-hand, he offers the aid of his trusted assistant Cesar. Unknown to the Queen, however, Cesar is out of the country and the investigation will be led by his sister in disguise.

More screenshots and a full game description after the gap.

Gamebook Adventures 1: An Assassin in Orlandes in Review – Choosing your own adventure, page by page!

Some time ago I reviewed Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain – a rendition of the classic Choose Your Own Adventure Book for the iDevice and was quite satisfied with it. Just recently Tin Man Games released a similar title in Gamebook Adventures 1: An Assassin in Orlandes, but it is completely original and developed exclusively for the iPhone. How does it match up against the series, written by Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone? It seems it is actually better! Feel free to discuss this review of Gamebook Adventures 1 in our forums.

AGS (Adventure Games Studio) coming to the iPhone via XAGE… Eventually… Possibly…

Whatever Apple thinks, they aren’t the first to open up the market to indie developers. Probably one of the first and simplest ways to date to get into the business of creating games (be it adventure ones) is still AGS – Adventure Games Studio – where even newbie developers are able to create games similar to the 90s Sierra titles without knowing one bit of programming. Quite a number of quality titles have been released based on the engine, including some commercial ones that have been well received by the critics. And now it seems the engine might finally find it’s way to the iDevice, bringing with it vast amounts of high-quality adventure games, thanks to Daniel Alexander and his Xna Adventure Game Engine.
