Twitter for iOS was updated earlier this afternoon and users will undoubtedly welcome the new additions. Twitter’s expanded tweets feature, which you’ve likely experienced already online (and on the mobile site) has made its way onto the iPhone and iPad (this is being rolled out gradually, so it’s possible that tweets don’t expand for you just yet). For those not familiar, users expanding tweets to partner sites (NYT, WSJ, TIME etc) will see content previews, view images and even be able to play videos right then without leaving the page. One example of this is if you tap on that Kickstarter tweet on your iPhone, you’ll be able watch the project video directly from the Tweet details view in the app.

The other signification new feature is the ability to set push notifications for specific people/companies you follow. So the moment they send out a tweet/retweet, you’ll immediately be notified via an alert or banner right on your iDevice. To set this up, head over to the “Me” tab in the newly updated Twitter app, tap on Settings, and then Notifications. Under Tweets, turn Tweets to On. Now whenever you visit the profile page of whoever it is you’re following, tap on the action button (next to Follow/Following button) and you’ll see the option to turn on notifications. Once set up, you can always head back into Me–>Settings–>Notifications–Tweets to tweak who you receive notifications from. This is especially handy during special events (say Apple Keynotes) and you wish to receive the latest play-by-play tweets from several of your favorite tech blogs.

The 4.3 update to the universal (and free) Twitter app is now available to download from the App Store. Check out the full changelog below.

Twitter Twitter, Twitter - Free

Twitter officially announced today an all new version of its social networking service, one aimed at consistency and simplicity.

Today we introduce a new version of Twitter. We’ve simplified the design to make it easier than ever to follow what you care about, connect with others and discover something new. You’ll see this new design both on Twitter.com and mobile phones, so that you’ll have a familiar experience any time, anywhere. We’ve also updated TweetDeck to be consistent with this new version.

And coinciding with this drastic redesign, Twitter for iPhone was updated a few hours ago and the app will now give you a glimpse of some the changes that will be rolling out at Twitter online over the next several weeks. The iPhone app is now divided into four tabs: Home is where you’ll see your timeline and tweets of those you follow; Connect is where you’ll go to see who has followed/mentioned you, retweeted or favorited one of your tweets; Discover lets you search for keywords/hashtags and also “discover” trending stories; and finally Me, which is the section for your profile, DMs and account settings. For all your Twitter users, be sure to grab this latest update at the App Store (or link below). You can also find out more info on Twitter’s new look at www.fly.twitter.com

With social networking now so heavily integrated into our lives, trying to keep up with all your accounts can be quite the daunting task. And with so many different apps out there for the various services, one can grow quite tiresome of exiting one and entering the other repeatedly throughout the day. Enter the folks from Taptivate with their social tool Friends Plus. Positioned as a one stop shop, Taptivate hopes to help simplify and streamline your social network experience.

When you first open Friends Plus, you are prompted to add your social networks (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn). Tapping the “Sign In” button will get that started for you. Afterwards, if you have to add other accounts, simply tap the gear icon located in the top right and you’ll see all available networks listed. Then on all subsequent app launches, you are presented with options to visit your contacts, view posts, as well as a short list of recent posts that involve you (think twitter @mentions, Facebook comments, etc).

One of the aspects of Friends that stands out is the User Interface. It’s slick and well designed. And navigating around the app is a breeze. So you’re just in the mood to look at photos. By going into the “Posts” section, you’ll have the option of doing just that (videos as well). You’ll also be able to view by a particular service or everything mixed in at once. Some other great navigation features include linking directly to albums in Facebook, viewing post comments inline and opening links up within the apps internal browser.

Another great feature that I use a fair bit is the inclusion of Instapaper and Read It Later. For those unaware, these are services that allow you to save things like websites, articles and more for viewing later. So being able to pull articles from my feeds is a big plus for me. That said, it would have been nice to be able to access/read those clippings within the app, however the fact that I can at least use it to save things for later is useful.

Now one of the biggest features missing from the app is the integration of push notifications. Personally, completely replacing all my other social apps with this push is a necessity. Although I was a little disappointed that it isn’t present at this time, Taptivate has said that it will be compatible with Boxcar with it’s next update (v1.6). Another feature currently absent but coming in the next update is, search. Within the app you’ll be able to search all your social networks and timelines right from within the app. Useful if you’re looking for certain topics.

The last feature I want to touch on is the integration with your contacts. Once you’ve added your networks, the app will link up any names that match entries in your contact list. So what you end up with is a contact card with all their regular info, along with tabs to view their latest activity and network related stats.

Overall, Friends Plus really is a handy way to merge a handful of all your social apps into one neatly designed package. Taking into account the upcoming features in v1.6, this is certainly a great tool for all of us who have let the world of social networking embed itself so deeply into our lives.

As long as the world turns there will always be Twitter clients hitting the appstore. Right, so there are more hits than misses and nowadays with so many Twitter clients, an app needs to speak to a niche need/market if it’s going to take hold. Otherwise all that work could have been for very little.  Today I have my hands on Creme by Directionality Studios. Sloganed “Creme de la creme” which crudely translates to “Best of the best”, Creme is a prime example of one that could swing either way.  Read on to see if this Creme, was frais (that’s French for fresh ;) , or curdled.

Feel free to discuss Creme in our forums.

Creme looks great. Using mostly shades of brown and white,Directionality Studios achieve a laid back look. It isn’t cut and paste, like some other clients.  Rather than fill the screens with buttons upon buttons, the UI is much more subtle and clean.

To move between screens you just swipe left or right; accessing other menus and functions is done by multi-touch/swipe input, a first for twitter clients that I’ve seen. To get to the settings area for example, you place 2 fingers on the screen and turn.  A very neat little feature.  There are more of those types of features, the problem is though, that there is no obvious “read this” anywhere in the app.  A major over sight in my opinion.

So to use the app you need to set up pages.  To do so you start at your “Creme” screen and swipe up. There you’ll be able to select everything from, individual users to any of your lists.  Anything you select ends up on the Creme page as a link to its page in the app. Rather than go with buttons or badges. The developers have made it so that when there is a new tweet in one of your sections, the background color of the page link on your Creme landing page is a darker shade of brown.  Again another nice UI idea. Definitely looks better than badges.

Now getting around is easy, just swipe left or right and you will see all the pages/people /whatever you selected displayed in a format similar to what most people see in a Twitter app.  Writing however is a different story. Creme seems more geared to the reader than the heavy writer as there are no options to include any sort of media in a tweet.  Anything “extra” that you are used to seeing in a screen for composing tweets isn’t there.  Now I know that some items ARE eventually coming to the app but the problem is that there are a lot of equally priced OR FREE apps that have all those things.

Now Creme does have some features that people are used too. Multiple accounts for example, even auto link shortening. This app is a good app. It’s just at this point really tailored to a specific group of people. I enjoy using it and reading is a breeze with all the neutral colors.  There’s also a neat feature where when one person sends you multiple messages in succession, rather than list them 4-5 times it just groups them and displays them all together. Very convenient and great on saving space.

In the end, I would say I both like and dislike Creme. It’s got more features than a lot of free apps, but lacks that even basic apps at their price point include. Its biggest point really is the clean and attractive interface.  As I mentioned before, I feel that this app is geared more towards the person that reads and watches timelines a lot more than they post themselves.  If that sounds like you, and you don’t NEED features like photo/video uploading or direct messages, then this app may be right for you.

Twitter’s official app for the iPhone/iPod Touch is finally available for download on the App Store. For those not aware, Twitter announced earlier last month that they’ve acquired Atebit’s popular Tweetie app (my personal favorite on the iPhone) and re-branding it as “Twitter”. While the overall design hasn’t changed, its release version is now 3.0 and a bunch of new features have been introduced, including:

  • Search has been reorganized, now you can search all tweets and find users in the same spot, view Top Tweets and Browse Suggested users.
  • Search results now include Top Tweets, try it with Trends…winner combo!
  • You can now use Twitter without an account! Search, Browse uses, view trends and top tweets.
  • Sign-up is now availabile within the application as well, complete with Suggested user list.
  • More tab has been re-organized to accomplish all this. Users with one account can add a second account under the Accounts and Settings button here.
  • Actions we’ve found people use most, like Retweet have been moved to the main actions bar.
  • Minor tweaks were made to tweet rendering so they match Twitter.com tweets

Aside from the fact that the Tweetie Twitter is widely considered as one of the best clients on the iDevice, the app is now FREE with the re-release. So for those of you who use alternative twitter apps like Osfoora and Twitterena, will you be making the switch over? For the price, you really can’t go wrong with an awesome client like Twitter.

They say that the only guaranteed things in life are death and taxes.  As an app reviewer, one thing I can definitely guarantee is that there is always ANOTHER Twitter app to review.  I had done my best to stay away from them as much as possible, however lately I’ve been in the mood for change and scrolling through the appstore I came across the oddly named Osfoora (translated: Little Bird). Read on to see what’s up with this strangely named little app.

If you’ve read my reviews (going back to day 1) you’ll know that I have been dedicated to 1 twitter client (tweeterena and the updated tweeterena pro).  Mostly because (a) its simple and (b) I loved the design.
Osfoora takes everything I love and want in a Twitter client and makes it look so clean and professional.  Your front/main screen is a collection of expertly created icons that link to all of the features you could ever need in a portable client (including latest additions like “lists”).  After that, each screen is eye candy.

Function wise, you can go just about anywhere from the home screen.  However, most of you will probably want to tap the “Timeline” button in the top left.  This brings you to the main interface of the app with regards to reading your tweets.  Along the bottom you have links to the usual areas (main/public timeline, @ mentions, messages, search and more). This is enough to give you what you’ll usually want, without overcrowding.

Whenever you have new messages that need reading you’ll see the bubble on top of the tab at the bottom and your screen will scroll to the oldest new tweet so that you just scroll down to read the rest. I really like how well it works, no lag or stutters.  When viewing from the main “Time Line” any @ mentions are highlighted a different colour for easy distinguishing. To update any of the timelines just drag the feed down to reveal the toolbar and refresh.

Tweeting yourself is just a matter of tapping the button on the top right and spilling your guts (in 140 characters or less of course). Here some people may be a little intimidated as there are a handful of tiny icons above your keyboard that represent everything from geotagging to image posting. It takes a bit of getting used to but after awhile I found it easier to work with.

One of the main things that really brought me to Osfoora was how much of the latest Twitter offerings it takes advantage of.  Things like the newer “ReTweet” option is offered, as well as the older “RT with quoted text” style.  They also display those new ReTweets with 2 icons showing who posted and who retweeted.  Very cool feature in my opinion.

Another great innovation that I wanted to touch on, is the automatic preview of Twitpic images, and the seamless integration of Twitvid movies.  Both run so smooth that if you didn’t know of the services you would think they were built right into the app.

There are tons of settings available to you. Everything from theme/customizations to selecting automatic image or url shortening services.  Rather than triple the length of this review I highly recommend you check the list of almost 40 features built into the app (and they aren’t even all of them).

Among the hundreds of various Twitter apps at the App Store, Osfoora strikes an excellent balance of features that I’m sure will leave even the heaviest of users satisfied. If you’re looking for a new Twitter client that is both visually appealing without getting cheesy, as well as stable and loaded with useful functions. Then I think Osfoora is definitely the app for you.

Lausanne, Switzerland – Nicolas Seriot and Anton Anton today are pleased to announce the release of TweetyShow 1.0 for iPhone and iPod touch devices. TweetyShow shows photos posted on Twitter in real time. iPhone users can scroll through an endless grid of photos coming live from the Twitter-sphere. The result is a strange, addictive and poetic experience. Whereas Twitter communication is traditionally text only, Twitter users frequently post links to photos, using services like Twitpic or Yfrog. TweetyShow’s goal is to put these photos in the spotlight.

TweetyShow has nothing to do with traditional Twitter clients. Indeed, it does not even require a Twitter account, or any kind of registration. People can download TweetyShow and start watching a continuous stream of photos right away. When people using TweetyShow particularly like a photo, they can save it to their iPhone photo library, or send it by email to a friend. They can also display all the photos of any Twitter user, or search by name for a Twitter user they know.

Twitter images grids already exist on the web, but TweetyShow brings this kind of service for the first time on Apple’s App Store. All the photos used in TweetyShow are shared by users through the Twitpic photo sharing service. To celebrate the launch of TweetyShow 1.0, dozens of promo codes for the US App Store will be posted in the next couple of days on the TweetyShow’s Facebook page.

Vegetarian approved, eat bacon guilt free! This is the first iPhone game to use 30fps video as the basis for the game, bringing a “bacon realism” that keeps users hungering for bacon! Check out the company website for screen shots and a video demo of the game (see link below). Additionally, below, there is a direct link to the Apple iTunes store for the game.

You dream of becoming a three-star chef (Michelin Rating) and you LOVE bacon! You didn’t attend the Culinary Institute of America and you haven’t won any James Beard Awards, you just love bacon, and you like it cooked to sizzling perfection! Impress your friends as you cook bacon right on your iPhone or iPod touch, taking it from Raw to Cooked by using virtual tongs to flip this universally delicious pork product. Shot in HB video (HB = Hot Bacon), this “game simulator” is the first of its kind, using full-motion video as the basis for the game. It will make everyone wonder: what’s that mouth-watering sizzle coming from your iPhone/iPod touch? Answer: ibacon!

ibacon takes full advantage of multi-touch, vibrate, and the accelerometer to:

  • Pinch: Use your fingers to pinch the cooking tongs, and flip each individual slice of bacon to hot, smokey perfection!
  • Pour: Drain off any accumulated bacon grease by tilting your device to the left.
  • Shake: If your bacon sets off the smoke alarm, shake the device to turn on the exhaust fan and cool that bacon down!
  • Splat: Swipe left or right to clear off grease splatters!
  • Eat: When your bacon is perfectly cooked, press the “eat bacon” button and tilt the device to the right or left to eat your bacon (note: the author of this game does not condone eating raw or undercooked bacon – please be sure to cook your bacon fully before eating).
  • Sights and Sounds: Hear your bacon crackle and pop as it cooks. See puffs of smoke and feel the device vibrate as grease splatters right on your screen (and the cook-top). You can almost smell that bacon-y goodness.

Minimum Requirements:

  • iPhone (all models) and iPod touch (Gen 1, 2 and 3)
  • Requires OS 2.2.1 or later
  • Tested and runs on iPhone 3GS and OS 3.1.2
  • 35.4 MB

A few weeks ago I did a review on the Twitter client, Twitterena, by Developer Andy Weekes. At the time, his client was one of, if not the best, all-around Twitter client feature wise. I reported then that he was working on releasing updates that would add quite a few premium features to an already amazing client (feel free to re-read my previous review for a re-fresher). Afterwards I found out that instead of just updating the existing client Andy realized that with the segmented market of Twitter users not everyone would need these enhanced features. The result has given birth to a new and even better client now known as Twitterena+ Pro.

Built on an already solid framework and design, Twitterena+ Pro is definitely headed to the top of the Twitter client pile. The design is simple and straightforward, making a void of navigation problems. Visually, just like its predecessor, it comes packaged with a handful of themes to alter the entire look of the app, as well as custom font sizes, the ability to view full size profile pictures and “Twitlonger” integration. Viewing your own profile is as simple as tapping your name at the top (a handy little feature if you like to see/edit what info you are showing the world).

Another fun feature is the ability to have custom backgrounds on your “tweet” screens. Using either the built in camera or your photo albums you can select any image to place in the background of your tweet screens. Not necessary, but another example of how Andy is trying to allow users to customize their own clients as much as possible.

review-socnet-twitterenapro5

If you have used Twitterena in the past (or any twitter client for that matter) you’ll have no problem navigating through this client. The usual links for Friends, @Mentions, DM’s(Messages), Favorites and Search are all available. When loading or refreshing the Friends/Mentions/Messages you can set the client to automatically scroll you to the oldest/first new posts. It and update frequency option are also available in the Settings.app menu. Favorites will store any tweets you have marked or favorited. In the search page you can either look through tweets and/or trends as well as look for tweets posted anywhere from 1 to 500 miles from your location.

review-socnet-twitterenapro6 review-socnet-twitterenapro7

Another great feature included is the ability to manage multiple accounts. Not a “new” feature in the Twitter world but unlike other apps that just log you into multiple accounts at the same time (thereby flooding you with updates and tweets coming from however many accounts you may use) Twittterena+ Pro saves the login info for whatever accounts you load into it and switching from one to another is a simple tap away. Everything loads up for each account individually so you won’t be overrun with tweets and you will always know what account you are dealing with.

review-socnet-twitterenapro8 review-socnet-twitterenapro9

The biggest feature in my opinion is the integration of Facebook. When you select the tweet screen you will notice a “Facebook Connect” button above your keyboard. Tapping it will bring up dialog to either enter in your Facebook credentials or open an account if you do not have one. Once you have your login data entered hit the “Tap to Allow” button and from that point on, your Twitter updates will also become your Facebook status.

review-socnet-twitterenapro10 review-socnet-twitterenapro11

This can be a real bonus for anyone that likes to share things across both platforms, or for someone who tries to keep all their friends in the loop but may not always want to login on both platforms. For me this feature is amazing. I definitely know more people on Facebook than Twitter but I update my friends on twitter a lot more often. Now I get the best of both worlds.

review-socnet-twitterenapro12 review-socnet-twitterenapro13

With the addition of adding priority support for users of the Pro version, developer Andy Weekes has managed to turn his excellent Twitter client into an amazing social networking hub. With the planned updates of adding user groups, enhanced user watching features and “TwitVid” support for 3G S users to name a few. All while STILL remaining cheaper than other “Premium/paid” clients. Twitterena+ Professional is in my opinion, one of the best designed, feature-packed Twitter clients currently available in the app store today.

With the “casual gamer” market increasing almost daily, developers have been scrambling to try and fill their app portfolio with at least one or two “pick up and play” style games to try and cater to this growing segment. Other developers such as NimbleBit are already well prepared with more than a few of these games under their umbrella, Moon Drop being one.

Moon Drop’s objective is simple. There are pods of lunar colonists arriving at the moon who need you’re cautious guidance to land them safely on the moon’s surface. You control the lander by tapping the screen and firing the boosters to give you the thrust power you need to either slow down and/or float left and right.

review-games-moondrop2

You start off with one lander, and in each stage thereafter, the amount of landers will increase, making control more difficult as you progress. As I said before, the point of the game is simple and that is where NimbleBit succeeds. Perfect in its simplicity, you would think the game is a piece or cake. Unfortunately, a dozen or so landers later, and you’re scrambling to control them – going crazy all the while.

As with all things the game must come to an end eventually. When the game is over though you are treated to a nice little feature that one wouldn’t expect to find in a game like this. A pop up tells you your score (measured in the amount of colonists) that successfully landed on the surface. You then have the option to Continue which takes you out to the main screen, or you can actually “Tweet” your score. If you decide to tweet your score a twitter login will pop up and after you enter your credentials, a templated answer is posted on your twitter feed with your recent score.
Available option are simply viewing a cumulative score, global and local leader boards, and when the game launches, volume. As for what NimbleBit mean by ‘local’, think New York to Virginia local!

review-games-moondrop5 review-games-moondrop6

This is quite honestly a good “pick up and play” game. It doesn’t really fall short anywhere IF you look at it in that way. You could quite easily pick this up, play for however long, and close it without feeling like you’re missing anything or have got lost in a storyline. It’s just good-simple-mindless(!!) amusement. To be honest, after a long exhausting day at work, Moon Drop is a pleasant indulgence.
