According to a report published by Digitimes this morning, Apple will be releasing two iPads with different sizes in 2012. One will likely be the iPad 3 at the end of Q1 (as expected), while a smaller, 7.85-inch iPad supposedly will be launched prior to the 4th quarter of 2012.

Apple is likely to launch a 7.85-inch iPad prior to the fourth quarter of 2012 in addition to a new iPad scheduled to be released at the end of the first quarter, according to sources in the supply chain.

Apple had in the past been said to be reluctant to releasing a smaller iPad, but according to Digitimes’ sources, the increased competition from the likes of the 7″ Kindle Fire and other Android smartphones/tablets helped persuade Apple into developing a more compact iPad.

However, in order to cope with increasing market competition including the 7-inch Kindle Fire from Amazon and the launch of large-size smartphones from handset vendors, Apple has been persuaded into the development of 7.85-inch iPads, the sources indicated.

The same sources claim that Apple will be purchasing 7.85-inch panels from both LG Display and AU Optronics, with production to commence by the end of Q2 of 2012. If true, it’ll be interesting to see how much these 7″ iPads will go for. My guess is that it’ll retail for around $399, the same price range as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.

The Korean market isn’t new to corporate promises that the iPhone will appear on its shores. Since the 3G’s 2008 American introduction – a product launch which, along with the App Store, gave Apple’s phone new legs, promises of the phone’s introduction have come in well-timed spurts which are never accompanied by product. The lastest, again from Korea’s largest carrier, KT, suggests that it will supply Apple’s handset -a promise which SK (the nation’s 2nd largest carrier) are also staking. Several hardware hurdles which have held foreign manufacturers from the market have been removed, but still, successfully establishing a niche in what has until now, been a handset dictatorship, is difficult.

That may just be the problem – the dictator has become the prime minister. Samsung pretty much owns the country and is looking for a bigger piece all the time. Theme parks, grocery stores, car parks, life insurance, skyscrapers, mobile carriers, etc.; without Samsung, which accounts for 20% of Korea’s export market, the country would cease to operate.

So, in the court of the capital king, can the iPhone ever make it past a few press-mongering statements and rumours? Probably, but I think a few more pledges will be said first. Then, when the iPhone’s contract is priced ridiculously high, combined with insane bandwidth limits and finally, a forbidding purchase price, it will be deemed ready for the market – a market which simply will not be able to afford it. If Apple want to do business in this country, it will have to pay a tribute to the king which may not be worth it.

In Korea, Apple products are already marked up from 30-50% and sometimes, older products sold as current models. Despite that, among the Samsung and Cowon media players, there are iPods; the mobile phone market, which is strangled by a monopolistic corporate fraternity, is interested in the iPhone – a handset which can add some spice into a market which is comprised of hi-technology pasted onto cloned, glitzy and largely poorly designed interfaces.

It is quite certain that no matter how much consumers may want the device, its presence will be held in check. Saying that, it is refreshing. Korea is overrun by American products – at first glance, even more so than Canada. If the iPhone doesn’t successfully make it into South Korea, it will be one of a handful of American companies that haven’t met success.

Many people complain that the iPhone or iPod touch doesn’t heft their entire library of music, games, apps and movies in its pricey 32GB bulk. Then, there are those who like me, plug in, sync iTunes with what we want to listen to and view for the next few days. It takes about a minute extra and costs thousands of pennies less. Well, for  that latter group, the 99$ iPhone may see an upgrade to its 3GS iteration, a move which will see even the poor sods racing by the nearly stationary 16GB 3G owners at 6,7x the speed. This report comes from the ninjas at BoyGenius who have obviously planted snap-happy informants at Rogers.

rumour-8gb3gs-01

They speculate that Apple have finally run too low on 3G stock and will quietly perform a switcheroo on Apple customers. 3G stock is bound to deplete sooner or later, but the last of its remnant at Apple, the 8GB has held special significance as the ‘affordable’ iPhone, which priced at 99$, has represented a psychological win for Apple. In 2002, 5GB held a users’ entire library of music, but today, with MMS, 8GB may seem paltry in comparison. However, an 8GB still retains a sought-after price point among smart phones.

According to Mutlichannel, the popular streaming video interface, Neflix, will bring its services to the iDevice and Nintendo’s Wii console. This rumour comes at the hands of an ‘executive familiar with neflix’s plans’, so perhaps it is not time to undo your cross fingers, toes, arms and eyes; but time to pray. In the event that netflix software does hit the iDevice, offering 12 000 videos for streaming, it might be safe to say that a collective ‘whoopee’ will rise from fans of Apple’s device from around the world.

The software will not be accessible over 3G for obvious bandwidth limitations of AT&T’s  ’unlimited’ services. Rather, it will be served over WiFi. That said, it isn’t unlikely that Apple will throw a spanner into the works as they did recently with Google’s Voice app, citing that it recreated functionality already present on the device. Netflix isn’t a close relative to the primarily community-sourced YouTube, but Apple’s portrayal of it in a rejection letter will likely be as an ‘indistinguishable product’.

iTune’s own rental services are also a point of contention over which Apple could reject Netflix, but in the end, any rejection from the Cupertino company would ultimately be anti-competitive. Hopefully Apple won’t resort to such measures which ultimately will cost them face and force the company to again dish out against their favourite fall-guy, AT&T.

If you’ve had enough of hardware rumours, flip down the page to the Klipsch S4 Inner Earphone review. If not, stick this one in your tailpipe. Okay, so TMA have recycled the above rendering about 27,5 times now, but that doesn’t mean that this article isn’t exciting. The same ArtsTechnica who tossed a first-generation iPod nano around till it nearly died, have been alerted to a minute, yet weighty change in Apple’s latest USB configuration.plist – a change which designates the evolving of an interesting product, the iProd.

This time, mention is made to the mysterious product (which debuted to the eager rumour-mill in March), as version 1,1. While an extra decimal place isn’t intrinsically exciting, the designation signifies that a product is either in significant stages of production or  being wrapped up for sale. Each of Apple’s iPod and iPhone iterations has been designated in similar manners, with the 3GS carrying the geeky engineering name: iPhone 3,1.

If this is in fact true, we may see the iProd, in all its elongated glory come September, or in the last few months leading up to Christmas-debt season. Of course this is all speculation and could point rather to an updated iPod (doubt it), but a new product, yet properly named with a 1,1 designation should be churning the buttery noodles of some of the most swarthy Buzz-barbarians out there. My skin has turned a darker shade of green.

If this rumour can be believed, it is another cemented piece of evidence that the new iPod touch will receive a camera. This time, the evidence comes from pictures of what is purported to be new iPod cases from China. The pictures come from several case manufacturers.

Rather than traditional media sources, case manufacturers – who are under no scrupulous obligations with Apple for secrecy – are the new sleuths in rumour industry. Because industry is highly competitive, any extra publicity goes along way, but more so, delivering product which can be purchased on launch day (or as close to launch day as possible) is pertinent. CultofMac got hit with a barrage of hi-res photos for the new devices.

While neither device appears to have undergone heavy design-knifing, the iPod touch is adorned with an unfamiliar centre camera. The Nano receives amore traditionally mounted in the bottom-left.

Following Apple’s traditional release schedule, we can expect the new devices to debut in September with greater storage at lower corresponding prices.

Thanks Wired!

Dime a dozen rumours are again in full swing with this bout of conjecture pointing not to a next iPhone, but the next iPod touch. Wired.com evidently have special monkeys within the business who have sussed out the innards of the next iPod touch. It is only fair too that the iPod finally gets some speculative press after surviving in in the iPhone’s shadow for far too long.

Wired.com’s article points to an industry-wide prevalent trend: upgrading low end hardware with the left overs from last years’ high end. Case in point is my Centaur grouppo. Just two years ago, it was 1000$ more expensive and mounted onto road bikes as Campagnolo’s Record but this year, it can be had in composite or stainless for much, much less.

The iPod touch 2G’s big upgrades were 1: the volume rocker (for which I upgraded), better battery life, a disabled Bluetooth chip and a few other things hidden under the bonnet. Since both platforms share the same development engine and more and more apps are making use of the iPhone’s camera and microphone, it would be a wise decision for Apple to implement the iPhone hardware. The App store is already feeling the effects of fragmentation as its hardware continues to branch up and out with every release. In a couple of years, the new iPhone could be branded with all manner of ‘made for App Store 7′, or ‘iPhone OS 5 Ultimate Steve Jobs Autographed Version Ready’. Who knows, there could even be an upgrade version where you buy an extension to your iPod touch which will allow it all the privileges of the iPhone, but with greater physical weight and more hassle.

While Skye, Fring and a few other telephony apps at the App store are good, they are a far call from a dedicated land line in terms of audio quality and connection strength. Keep in mind though, that rumours are plenty and often easily faked. I am voting this rumour as ‘true’ – Apple can’t keep turning out dissimilar logic boards, their leftovers have to go somewhere.

There is simply nothing more exciting than new hardware announcements from Apple. If this rumour from the Taiwanese Infotimes is to be believed, 1st-generation touch screen based hardware from the Cupertino company could be in the hands of Apple’s faithful by October. As part of that faithful, I am counting my pennies now and have come up short by about 20 000.

While not a netbook in the traditional money-wise sense, Apple’s middling touch-screen computer and likely metal-enclosure will elevate the price to meet the standards set among higher-end hardware. Add the typical Apple profit-margin formula and as Infotimes guess, we are likely to see a product in the 800-900 USD range.

The touch-based tablet netbook will likely sport a 9.7 inch screen from Wintek, but other manufacturers claim that Apple have placed orders for their products. It is safe to put this on the rumours shelf and as October looms, take it down, sniff it and see if the odour has changed. One thing is clear: Apple have held back from producing a tablet computer long enough. Like the iPod, their attack on this platform will be monumental, but, as the device will be OSX-only, may make less of an impact with Windows-poisoned consumers than the now-ubiquitous PMP.

Take a look here for a ‘rundown’ of the keynote speech. Quite exciting releases in OSX, OS 3.0 and the iPhone 3GS kept this WWDC’s keynote a real page-scroller. 3rd iPhone rumours will now bring up memories that now can go lie in shallow graves, but as you can see, many of the rumours were spot on.

After the jump is a list of items that did not get mention at WWDC.

What was not mentioned at WWDC:

  • Front facing Camera
  • Relocated Speaker
  • Matte Backing
  • OLED screen
  • Black Metallic Lining
  • HD Video Support
  • Apple-TV like behaviour
  • Luminous logo
  • Improved Ram performance
  • Adobe Flash
  • 802.11 N Wi-Fi
  • FM transmitter

Nevertheless, most of these omissions or no-shows are cosmetic. The core of the iPhone has been substantially upgraded both in hardware and in software. What are your thoughts on the OS 3.0 and iPhone 3GS? Are you happy or disappointed by WWDC’s Keynote?

Keep a look out here for major updates from Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference as well as a final recap as the conference closes. Apple fans, iPhone devotees and the rest of you, it is WWDC time! If you are interested, take a look at the entire event over at Apple’s WWDC QuickTime page.

Highlights:

  • Major MacBook upgrades and Incremental MacBook Pro upgrades (all aluminium versions are now MacBook Pros)
  • Snow Leopard to be sold for only 29$ USD! Microsoft’s balls are in Apple’s court now – They cannot afford to price Windows 7 less than Windows Vista, so upgrading to the newest from Redmond will be very, very expensive in light of Apple’s supple and tidy OS.
  • iPhone 3G at 99$ (8GB), iPhone 3GS 199$ (16GB), iPhone 3GS 299$ (32GB)
  • Autofocus Camera @ 3 MegaPixels and new Camera software/10cm Macro
  • MMS
  • Digital Compass to work with Core Location
  • Turn by Turn Navigation and In-App Google Maps Support
  • Better Language Support
  • Find My iPhone for Mobile Me users
  • Tethering/HTML 5.0/OpenGL 2.0
  • Voice commands for phone and iPod functions
  • Landscape editing
  • Spotlight search for entire iPhone and all apps!
  • Better Battery (iPhone 3GS)
  • More Accessibility support
  • iPhone users can download movies straight from iTunes (unless your mum says now)
  • Cut/Copy/Paste for every app in the App Store and all Apple apps (2 years too late?)

Of course, we knew many of these functions as part of the OS 3.0 Sneak Peak back in March.

Looks like the App Store has gone down. This usually happens when Apple are about to unveil new hardware, software or from shameful programming. Given the timing, new updates to hardware or software are more than ostensible.

If you hate reading and believe that a picture is worth a thousand words, and that pictures with words are worth even more, then this post from the Green Room is for you. With virtually every next iPhone rumour compiled in a nicely rendered map with full legend, this is the wrap-up you have been waiting for. Keep in mind that we will likely have more than enough of the Apple-juice come Monday’s WWDC, but in the meantime, this blog post is a great way to get through the day.

Original Blog Post below:

Here’s a graphical representation I put together of the dozens of rumors that have been circulating over the past few months regarding the third generation iPhone that’s likely to be announced next week at WWDC 2009 (our keynote liveblog details can be found here). Click the image for a higher resolution version. There’s a few notes for this one:
* I’ve put some source numbers beside each arrow, these are the references for each rumor and are published at the bottom of this post.
* The rumors (such as release date and price) that don’t really match a particular part of the iPhone’s hardware/software have been placed at a random point on the back of the iPhone.
* The prediction key is based entirely on my own opinion, and is by no means accurate.
Of course, if anything else develops between now and Phil’s keynote, I’ll be listing them here, so be sure to check back before the day, and remember, we’ll be covering the keynote live right here on TGR, click here for the details. – r.

Update: It seems this has generated quite some interest around the internet with more than 10,000 people visiting per day – thanks for your views, tweets and pings!

Update 2: The great folks over at iPodizados.com have translated the graphic into Spanish. Check it out here!

If you haven’t time to read through the entire 19-page patent, let me outline it for you. A system called, “Methods and systems for mixing media with communications” will tentatively allow users to share different media whilst making telephone calls. Apple would accomplish this by enhancing the phone function in the iPhone with an ‘add media’ button. iPhone users could then share music files, video, images, voicemails, and podcasts with a tap.

The technology would also allow users to carry on conversations while listening to or viewing shared content much like Leopard’s iChat. Users would then be able to listen to or view the next media in the host’s iPhone as if the file was in their own library. More details will be revealed either at Monday’s WWDC or when this function sees implementation in Apple’s iPhone.

This system is limited to direct iPhone-iPhone calls and is not guaranteed to make it in time for the next iPhone. Appleinsider also mention that throughout the patent, numerous references to video conferencing appear. With all the hype and hope surrounding front-facing video cameras and possible video conferencing, it is likely that this patent will see exposure some time in the future and possibly, in the next iPhone.

Oh yeah… Welcome to the Social [sic]!
