Google’s Field Trip app is now available for the iPhone. First released on Android several months ago, this location discovery tool runs in the background of your phone. As soon as you get close to “something interesting”, an iOS notification will let you know of the POI in question. Select from a local feed of things you’d like to see, and Field Trip taps into numerous publications (Zagat, Cool Hunting, Atlas Obscura etc) to help you discover places/experiences under categories like Architecture, Food & Drinks, Offers & Deals, Movie locations and more.

Field Trip even knows when you’re driving, so it’ll automatically “talk” to you about the interesting locales around you as you’re behind the wheel. A recent section also keeps track of your recently discovered places and of course, they can be shared via the likes of email, Facebook and Twitter. The app is free to download and currently only optimized for the iPhone, though it’ll still work on 3G/LTE iPads.

App Highlights:

★ Discover thousands of interesting places/experiences that fall under the following categories: Architecture, Historic Places & Events, Lifestyle, Offers & Deals, Food Drinks & Fun, Movie Locations, Outdoor Art and Obscure Places of Interest around you.

★ Choose from three different modes to set frequency of Field Trip notifications. See “Field Trip” worthy places around you on a map, by tapping on cards in map view to pull up enthralling points of interest around you.

★ Go on a Field Trip while you drive. Field Trip can detect when you’re driving and automatically “talk” about interesting places and experience around you.

★ Came across an amazing story or restaurant? Mark it as a favorite to easily come back to it at any point.

★ Capture the memory of a special place, by sharing a wondrous discovery through email and social networks such as Google+, Twitter and Facebook.

★ Wondering where the gem that you recently discovered is? Find your discovered field trip cards in the “recent’ section.

Google Maps, hands down the best maps app for iOS, has received its first update and users now have better integration with their Google contacts. Upon signing in with v1.1 of the Maps app, any saved addresses on your Google account will show up when you look up the name of a friend of family member. This makes it easier to find driving directions to your contact’s address, of course provided that you’ve already entered their details beforehand. To help distinguish between search results of names you’ve typed in, your saved contacts will show up with a person icon to the left, while general results with a similar names will have a magnifying glass icon beside it. Currently, Google Contacts search only works with regular Google email accounts, and is not available for Enterprise Apps accounts.

The update also introduces a new quick search option for local places via preset categories, like restaurants, bars, gas stations attractions and more. This is certainly a welcome addition for helping find POIs nearby. But if you really want to get serious with looking up places around you, I’d still suggest using Localscope (now completely free to use), which aggregates sources from not just Google Maps, but Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook, Yelp, Wikipedia and others. Finally, v1.1 now allows you to choose between Kilometers or Miles for your preferred distance units.

Google Maps is free and the update is now available for download on the App Store.

After months of waiting for the best maps app for iOS 6, Google has finally released their highly anticipated Maps app for the iPhone. With a slick interface and all the features you’ve come to love but found missing on Apple’s own Maps app (i.e. public transit info and Street view), it appears the long wait was well worth it.

Navigate your world with Google Maps, now available for iPhone. Get comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps with built-in Google local search, voice guided turn-by-turn navigation, public transit directions, Street View and more. Use Google Maps to discover great places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and reviews from people you trust. Sign in to save your favorite places and quickly access all your past searches and directions from your computer, right on your phone.

Like Apple’s Maps app, the new Google Maps is vector-based, resulting in quick load times and silky smooth rotations in both 2D and 3D views. Sure it doesn’t have the fancy “Flyover” feature (one I’ve used no more than a handful of times just for the fun of it), but its UI is highly intuitive and easy to use. I love how search results of POIs and businesses (according to Google, there are over 80 million in their database) are displayed at the bottom, which you can slide left/right to reveal more, or simply pull up to reveal the Google Cards interface, where you can Call/Save/Share the location, read reviews, activate Street View and more. Public transit works in a similar fashion in that when you tap on a bus stop icon and “pull up” the info from below, the card view will display all the city buses that stop there and their next (2) arrival times.

I haven’t had a chance to check out how well the turn-by-turn navigation works yet, but judging by how well everything else has been put together by Google so far (and the 7,000+ 5-star ratings on the App Store at time of writing), I don’t anticipate any issues.

Google Maps is now available for the iPhone and iPouch Touch (not support for the iPad yet) and iOS 5.1 and higher is required. If you’ve got an iDevice and use it to navigate/look up POIs, there’s no reason not to download the new Google Maps app. Google’s 30 sec. intro trailer and The Verge’s First Look video below.

Nokia has released their first iOS app, which it hopes will lure users away from the various mapping solutions on the platform. Called HERE Maps, it’s based off HTML 5 and offers several features that Apple’s own Maps app lacks. Most notable of these include turn-by-turn walking directions (strangely enough, not for driving directions), community maps (selected countries), the ability to save map areas for offline use, and public transportation. You can also sign up for a free Nokia account that lets you ‘Collect’ places, which can then be viewed at a later time on mobile devices and even the web.

After testing out HERE Maps for almost an hour, I think it’s off to a fairly solid start, though it still has a long ways to go for it to be even considered  among the best map apps on the iPhone and iPad. For starters, there’s no support for the retina display, so street names will look a bit fuzzy on the iPhone 4/iPad 3 and up. The POIs (points of interests) are also pretty spotty, and sadly you can only save one offline map at a time – any new ones you create will simply overwrite the previous save (a crappy limitation for travellers who won’t have access to data/Wifi on the road).

Personally, I love using Localscope to find all my POIs, especially when I need to create location-based reminders. And seeing how HERE doesn’t offer turn-by-turn driving directions, Waze and Scout by Telenav are great alternatives that are also free.

If you can’t wait for Google’s dedicated maps app to make its way onto iOS (they’re said to be prepping it for submission soon) and don’t care for Apple’s Maps app, HERE Maps is still worth a look. It’s far from perfect, but there are still some handy features, like routing by public transit and live traffic view.

HERE Maps is a free download (3.7MB) and a universal app for both the iPhone and iPad.

Good news for Google Maps advocates using iOS 6. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google has been field testing their long rumoured iOS Maps app and putting on the “finishing touches” prior to submitting it to Apple’s stringent approval process.

Google has distributed a test version of its new mapping app that will work on Apple’s iPhones and iPads to some individuals outside the company, said a person with direct knowledge of the matter. Google has been putting the finishing touches on the app before submitting it for approval to the Apple iTunes store, this person said, though it is unclear exactly when that will happen.

Perhaps even more exciting is that the forthcoming iOS Google Maps app will feature turn-by-turn navigation (a feature that is already on their Android Maps app), which if true, could turn the majority of users away from Apple’s own mapping solution.

The forthcoming Google Maps app for the iPhone is expected to contain turn-by-turn navigation that would allow people to use it like a GPS device while driving, said the person familiar with the matter. The turn-by-turn navigation feature didn’t exist in the previous Apple-device version, partly because of various disagreements between the companies over other aspects of the Apple-controlled app.

Back in late September, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt confirmed that no dedicated Google Maps app for iOS was in the works, though it’s more than likely that this has been in the making since Apple decided to implement their own maps app in iOS 6 earlier this year.

It is not known when the Google Maps app will be submitted, or more importantly, whether Apple will actually approve it. I don’t see why Apple wouldn’t, but it’d be a real shame if they don’t, seeing how there are plenty of third party Maps and Navigation apps on the App Store – like Waze,TelenavTomTomNAVIGON and more. In the meantime though, you always just use the Google (web) Maps app by going to maps.google.com on your mobile browser, where Street View was implemented in early October.

Speaking of maps, if you haven’t already, be sure to download City Maps 2Go, a great offline maps app that’s still currently free on the App Store.

Anyone who’s ever travelled to another country with their iPhones (and iPads) have no doubt looked up the App Store for some offline maps solution. With carriers charging an arm and a leg for data roaming fees, it’s no wonder that there are countless travel apps with offline map capabilities. The best I’ve come across so far is City Maps 2Go, which also happens to have gone free today (was $1.99). Using Map data and POI from OpenStreetMap, the app lets you separately download 7,800 maps from all over the globe – all neatly sorted by cities, counties and provinces.

Download only the cities you need (for example NYC is 9.8MB) and once you do, you’ll have access to all the major POIs (points of interest) and city street names at your fingertips – even if you don’t have access to Wifi or 3/4G. My favorite aspect of City Maps 2Go is once you’ve located on the map where you are (or a specific location), you can bring up nearby POIs and sort them by Name/Distance and set filters based on 11 categories. The results will then be displayed based in relation to where you currently have the map opened, all without requiring data access.

There are loads more features, like saving bookmarks/ user created lists, viewing hotel ratings and making bookings via Booking.com, and rating/ reviewing places, and sharing those recommendations with friends using the ‘Ulmon hub’. In addition, offline wikipedia articles about those POIs and landmarks can be downloaded and referenced on-the-go, though this requires an IAP of $2.99. The good thing about this is that there’s a free trial available (you pick the city you wish to activate it for), so you can test out this feature before paying for it.

Even if you only occasionally travel, I highly recommend that you grab City Maps 2Go while it’s still free (for a very limited time).

Using location based reminders on iOS can no doubt be useful, but adding a specific location to the Reminders app can certainly be a drag. For instance, say you want to be reminded of a cheque that needs to be deposited when you drive by your local bank. To do this, you can create said reminder, turn on “Remind Me at a Location” and choose either your current location or enter the actual address. Unless you know your bank’s address, you pretty much don’t have a choice but to open Safari, lookup the info online, and copy & paste it back into the app. Needless to say, this is rather time consuming. Thankfully, there are easier ways to accomplish this, particularly with the help of the recently updated Localscope app for the iPhone.

Localscope is a great discovery app that aggregates POIs from various search engines and social networks (i.e Google Maps, Google+ Local, Yelp, Citysearch, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook etc) in order to help you find places easily. With the 3.0 update, the app is now able to add geo tagged reminders for locations and places you discover in Localscope.

Starting today, Localscope promises to help you better remember things you want to do at or around locations. Version 3 introduces integration with the iPhone’s reminders system enabling users to set location based reminders at any location discovered with Localscope. Users can choose to be alerted by push notifications on arrival at, or departure from the location and even categorize the reminders into lists, all this from within Localscope.

Beyond adding reminders, Localscope aggregates all location based reminders from the reminders app and presents them as search and discovery sources in Localscope. This lets users visualize reminders as location points using the 3 unique views of Localscope and take further actions on the reminders like navigating to the points using any of the integrated navigation apps.

With this functionality, it’s a cinch to look up a particular business/place near you and set reminders for either when you leave or arrive at that location. I’ve been adding location based reminders via Localscope the past several days and it really does simplify the process. With Apple’s own Maps app providing so few POIs at this time, using Localscope’s aggregated search engines to discover places is far superior. And if you need turn-by-turn directions to a location, Localscope supports a number of navigation apps (think of it as an “open in” feature) like Apple’s Maps app, Waze, TelenavTomTom, NAVIGON and more.

One thing is keep in mind that is Localscope 3.0 now only supports iOS 6. So if you’re still rocking iOS 5, sadly the app won’t be compatible with your device. If however, you’re using the latest iOS, Localscope is $1.99 and a free upgrade for exisiting users.

Localscope Cynapse, Localscope - $1.99

What’s New in Version 3.0

★ Bi-directional integration with iOS Reminders
- Add geo tagged reminders for any location or content you discover in Localscope.
- Choose to be alerted by push notifications when you arrive near the location or depart from the location
- Categorize reminders into reminder lists

- Search geo tagged reminders with the Reminders search source
- Perform Localscope actions with geo tagged reminders. e.g. Get directions to the location of a reminder using any of the integrated navigation apps

★ New source – Search and Discover places globally using Factual.

★ Designed for iOS6

Were you ever tempted to send a short text message while driving to a spouse/partner/friend just to let them know that you’re on the way? Now when I last checked, texting and driving at the same time is highly ill advised (not to mention illegal in most states/provinces), so there has to be a safer and easier way right? Well that’s where the newly released Onmaway for iOS comes in. With the app, users can share their location in real time using the iPhone’s GPS functionality. Simply select the other party via sms or email, choose the duration of how long they can track you and a customized message. Your friends and family will then receive a link and be able to view your location in real time via any web browser. For longer trips, there’s an Epic Journey mode that allows you to share your location on Facebook or Twitter every 4 hours.

Onmaway requires iOS 4.2 or later, and with more recent iDevices (3GS or iPhone 4), you’ll be able to run the app in the background as well. Demo video and more info after the break.

Onmaway - Share Your Location without Texting While Driving Ka Pow Interactive, Onmaway, 2.9 MB – $1.99

App Description

Launch Special – Now only $1.99! Onmaway is a simple and secure way to share your location with friends, family, or social graph over a specific period of time; whether it’s your spouse for 20 minutes or your social network for the length of a cross-country trip.

The app allows you to send a link and customized message to friends and family via text, email, and social media that lets them track your location on any web browser.

✓ Let your family watch you drive home from work;
✓ Parents track kids as they walk home from school;
✓ Watch college kids drive to their new campus;
✓ Watch as friends move to a new city or state;
✓ Update co-workers on your way to office;
✓ Let friends know you’re headed to the pub;
✓ The possibilities are endless!

Location tracking apps by cell phone service providers can cost $20 a month or more; Onmaway is a onetime purchase that you can use as much as you want.

Texting while driving is dangerous and banned in 39 states with more passing legislation now. Over 30% of all traffic accidents are caused by “distracted driving” and that number increases with teen drivers. Remove the distraction of updating your location to your friends and family with this low-cost solution.

Find a bug or have a suggestion, don’t write it here, drop us a line at support@onmawayapp.com and we’ll jump right on that (or let you know how to fix it).

Figure out a new way to use Onmaway? Let us know at suggestions@onmawayapp.com.

Just so you know…

▸ Onmaway utilizes the GPS functionality in your iPhone and iPod Touch (3rd gen+), which means, just like any other map app on your phone, it can be a bit of a battery drain. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. We suggest you plug in your phone or limit your use of the app if you’re worried about battery life.

▸ Onmaway can run the background on any iOS 4+ device, but if you have another app that needs the memory space, your phone could kill off Onmaway and thus stop tracking your location. If it’s really important, leave it running in the foreground.

We’re actively working on updates and features, so please send us feedback.

Travelling abroad with an iPhone, one thing I always miss the most is cell data. While theoretically I could turn on roaming, I would have to mortgage my house to do so. And this also means that unless I find a Wi-Fi hotspot I’m stuck without the lovely Google Maps that I, as many others, have grown so accustomed to. And with my wife making extensive use of the handy My Maps feature of Google’s to plan our trip, this is even more depressing. And then I learned about The Cartographer by Tasty Pixel.

The idea of The Cartographer is plain and simple: it provides you with a way to browse your maps offline and have access to the power of Google My Maps (i.e. placing custom markers with notes). And it does so in a fantastic old fashioned interface, with custom sources to choose from. But let’s examine the features in more detail.

For those of you not in the know, Google My Maps is a seldom advertised and somewhat hidden feature of Google Maps that allows you to place custom markers on a map and even add comments. Additionally you can put these markers on separate map layers (think of them as folders) to have convenient control over them. Why support for these My Maps is not included in the stock Maps app is beyond me, but with Cartographer you can easily access ones tied to your Google account, and more than one if necessary. And you can even edit and create new ones right from the comfort of your iDevice.

The second feature is invaluable as well – downloading maps for later offline access. Whether you’re out of the country with extreme roaming fees or simply away from network coverage, it’s difficult to estimate the usefulness of the ability to check the map regardless of your connection. And though the app doesn’t allow you to cache maps from Google, switching over to OpenStreetMaps.org instead, it allows to intuitively select the area and detail you want to cache, making the process seamless and even matching the location of the My Maps markers automatically.

A nice bonus feature is The Cartographer’s original vintage visual style. Just one look at the screenshots and you’ll understand what I mean. And if such a style is not your particular cup of tea, you can tune down the “vintaginess” (yes, I know there’s no such word) in the Settings. Probably the only real gripe I have with The Cartographer is the absence of any kind of native iPad support, be it via a separate app or a universal version.

If you find yourself on the road more than once in a while you’ll definitely appreciate all the features The Cartographer has to offer. It does lack universal app support and only caches maps from OpenStreetMaps.org. But even out in on the sea with no wireless access in sight, it will allow you to feel almost like an ancient Viking explorer, especially with the “vintage” meter turned to the max. And having all your My Maps markers accessible along with any comments is sure to allow you not to miss even the slightest detail of your plan and make your trip truly unforgettable.

With this I declare The Cartographer officially touched! Land-ho!

If skobbler’s devs have one thing painted in their collective brains at the moment, I reckon it’s “OpenSource for the win!” or some such motto. In the USA, skobbler, the OpenStreetMap-based turn-by-turn navigation/GPS app, is a huge win for what may well be the future of navigation apps: open source mapping. You the customer can also be the mapper, and God only knows that you know your locale better than any Samsung-style megacorp who tries to tell you that they know better. Hell, rather than waiting for the bigwigs to finally update their software, thousands of your mates on a variety of platforms are mapping the world for you.

In case you aren’t in to oil spill-suckers, there is also a pedestrian/bicycle mode. Perhaps its killer feature though, is that the US version  comes with no monetary strings attached – at all. Needless to say, skobbler has been a hit in its native Germany and ruffled quite a few feathers in the process, but those feathers probably don’t belong there in the first place.

OutDoors – GB National Parks OS Maps 1:50k in Review – Those Boots Were Made for Walking! http://www.touchmyapps.com/2010/04/14/outdoors-gb-national-parks-os-maps-1-50k-in-review/ http://www.touchmyapps.com/2010/04/14/outdoors-gb-national-parks-os-maps-1-50k-in-review/#comments Wed, 14 Apr 2010 23:12:32 +0000 http://www.touchmyapps.com/?p=31424 As a keen walker and camper, I was excited when I spotted OutDoors – GB National Parks OS Maps in the App Store. As a keen walker and camper, I was excited when I spotted OutDoors – GB National Parks OS Maps in the App Store. Although at first glance you may think it’s quite expensive ($24.99 US), when you add together how much it would have cost to buy the physical versions of all the maps included, it’s actually a bargain. Plus you can never blame poor map reading again as with GPS, you’ve got no excuse for not knowing where you are!

OutDoors includes 1:50k maps for all of the National Parks in Great Britain, which are: Peak District, Lake District, Snowdonia, Dartmoor, Pembrokeshire Coast, North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales, Exmoor, Northumberland, Brecon Beacons, The Broads, New Forest, South Downs, The Cairngorms and Loch Lomond. For the rest of Great Britain, you have 1:250k. So you’ve essentially got the entire UK at your fingertips!

The maps are stored on the iPhone, which naturally means the App has a large file size, but given there’s no guarantee of 3G signal when you’re out in the sticks, it’s better to have it there ready. I can see why it might be a problem for people with 8GB devices, but mine is 16GB so this isn’t really an issue. You could also uninstall it from your device when you’re not using it, then reinstall when you need it.

When you enter the App you’re presented with a view of the UK – with a blue flashing blob to indicate your current position. You can zoom in on this to see the area in more detail – a great deal of detail if you’re in one of the National Parks in question. From there, you can scroll and zoom around Great Britain, all from the palm of your hand. You’re able to search for places using their place name (providing it’s included on a regular OS map), OS Grid Reference, or Latitude/Longitude.

The App has also been integrated with a website called EveryTrail. You can download walks and bike rides that people have uploaded to the site for free, add them to the App and embark! You can also create your own walks, adding names, Waypoints and points of interest as you go. You can see the route on your device’s screen so you’ll know for sure that you’re going the right way – no more arguing about getting lost!

Overall, this is an excellent App for people whose hobbies include walking and cycling. I’d recommend buying a decent waterproof case for your iPhone if this is something you’re interested in – after all, the last thing you want is to be lost in the rain and not wanting to take your iPhone out in case you get it wet and break it! OutDoors is a very useful App and you can purchase whichever maps you require from the App Store – though it would be better if they were then added into the same App, rather than displaying separately.

The App will naturally use up your iPhone battery, but as long as you’ve fully charged it before leaving the house, you should be OK. After all, you’re not going to need to constantly have the phone at hand, you’d just need to consult it when unsure of your route. The UK is pretty good at waymarking its routes so you can find footpaths easily enough without the App. Just keep an eye on battery life, as you don’t want to end up stranded somewhere unfamiliar!

The OS maps that you’ve purchased are also covered by a lifetime licence, so if they’re updated, this will be fed down to your phone, too, making your purchase even better value for money. You wouldn’t get that promise with a physical map!

If you’ve been persuaded by this review – just bear in mind that you’re better off purchasing this App through iTunes on your computer and downloading it then transferring it to your phone. Because of the huge file size it would take a long time to download via WiFi! Other than that… knock yourself out and enjoy the outdoors!
