Facebook Messenger has just been updated with a feature some will undoubtedly find most useful – the ability to send voice messages to your Facebook friends. As TechCrunch describes it:

With voice messaging in Messenger, you open a conversation (new or existing) are shown a red “record” button. Similar to Facebook Poke’s video recording interface, you press and hold the button, talk or record a sound up to one minute in length, and then release the button to stop recording. You can then send then audio message which appears in the conversation stream as a little wave form that can be listened to. Voice messages will also be available for listening from the web interface.

Now before you start updating the app to give this walkie-talkie like feature a spin, it’s unfortunately only available to Canadians at the moment. There doesn’t appear to be plans for the time being to expand voice messaging to the web interface (though you’ll be able to listen to incoming messages on the web), as Facebook has said that their focus right now is on the mobile platform.

For now, though, only Canadien users of the latest version of Facebook Messenger for iOS can try VoIP. People can’t VoIP call Android users or people outside of Canada. The feature is a bit buried. Users have to click the “i” icon in the top right of a conversation to reveal a “Free Call” button. It’s not entirely free, though. It will burn data on a user’s existing carrier plan.

Video Messaging on Facebook could very well be next, but that hasn’t been confirmed by Facebook. If voice messaging is well received, video messaging would be the logical next step. For now, Canadians will serve as guinea pigs for the new feature, and it is expected that the service will be rolled out in the US in the near future.

Gifting iTunes Gift Cards to your family and friends has just gotten a whole lot easier, thanks to the added ability to send them as digital cards right from Facebook. So if you see that it’s your FB friend’s birthday (or any other occasion), simply head over to their page and click on the “Gift” icon. Once the iTunes option has been selected, you can purchase them in denominations of $10/$15/$25/$50 and pay with your credit card. You can even recommend albums, movies, games, apps, and more to go along with the e-card. Can’t find the Gift button on your friend’s page (located above box area where you post on someone’s wall)? Unfortuntely, the gifting feature is currently only available in the US.

And as noted by AllThingsD, it’s not surprising that iTunes gift cards have come to Facebook, with retailers getting a nice cut for each GC sold.

Per Apple’s last 10-K, the company generated $7.5 billion from the iTunes Store during fiscal year 2012. Industry sources say that more than $2 billion of that revenue comes directly from iTunes gift cards. Sources also tell us that existing retailers who sell iTunes gift cards (like Best Buy, Target and the like) usually keep around 13 percent of each gift-card dollar sold.

So that adds up to around, say, a $260 million market size for physical iTunes cards split among participating retailers, of which Facebook will now be an active participant. That pie is small compared to Facebook’s overall revenue ($3.71 billion in 2011), but another digital product with less overhead and high demand is definitely a win for Facebook’s Gifts department. Not to mention the potential boost Facebook’s massive billion-user distribution could give on iTunes gift-card sales overall.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday may have just passed, but with the Christmas season approaching, you can bet that Facebook will be selling a whole bunch of iTunes Gift Cards in the coming weeks. Of course, if you don’t use Facebook, you can always just buy them directly from iTunes (both email gift certificates and physical cards are available).

Over the past 24 hours, several notable iPad apps were updated to include support for the new iPad’s retina display. PDF Expert, my favorite PDF reader/annotator on the iPad, also received a great new feature – Document Thumbnails. Now all files are shown as thumbnails and moving PDFs around (i.e into folders) can be done via simple drag ‘n drops. Another anticipated update came from Air Display, where turning on the “HiDPI mode” on your Mac OS Lion will essentially turn that new iPad into a gorgeous 2048 x 1536 secondary display for your iMac/Macbook. Check out the complete “what’s new” for these updated apps after the break.

Air Display

What’s New in Version 1.6

HiDPI
• If you have Mac OS X Lion and a Retina iOS device, now you can turn on “HiDPI mode.” HiDPI is a built-in Mac OS X feature that makes UI elements render at double resolution. It’s absolutely stunning on a Retina display. By default, Mac OS X disables HiDPI because until now, there has been no Mac display with high enough resolution. Air Display on a new iPad, with its 2048×1536 264-dpi Retina display, finally brings HiDPI to life.

RETINA DISPLAY (Mac OS X 10.6+ only)
• Devices with Retina displays now can optionally render at high resolution. You can still choose to view at non-Retina resolutions.
• Air Display now uses the full screen resolution when scaling (while doing video out or mirroring a larger device).

BUG FIXES
• No longer disabling drivers on MacBook Pro models with NVIDIA 9400M/9600M video adapter. Please see avatron.com/lion for more information.
• Fixed bugs related to modifier keys on the virtual and Bluetooth keyboards, when connected to a Mac. Requires Mac Air Display Connect update.
• Fixed the “Enable Keyboard” option (in the Air Display section in the Settings app).
• Improved frame rate and quality.
• Fixed video output bugs.

Air Display Avatron Software, Air Display (TMA Review), – $9.99

NOOK by Barnes & Noble

What’s New in Version 3.1.3

• Easier-to-use Highlight feature for NOOK Books – highlight all the words you want
• On NOOK for iPad only: Now read in 1 or 2 columns when using landscape orientation
• Several bug fixes

This update requires iOS 4.3+ and works on the new iPad, iPad2, iPad1, iPhone 4S/4/3GS and iPod touch (3rd generation and above).

In the event that you’re still not sick of slinging helpless birds into those pesky piggies, you can now simultaneously do your favorite two things in the whole wide world: Facebook stalking and playing Angry Birds. Earlier today, Angry Birds officially made its way onto Facebook, where 800+ million of its users can play the mindlessly addictive game for free. The Facebook version features the same gameplay we’ve all come to love, but with more of a social aspect thrown in, plus several all-new power ups.

Are you the best Angry Birds player around? Now you can prove it! With the brand-new social features for Angry Birds on Facebook, you can compete with your friends, brag about your scores, and earn coveted gold, silver, and bronze crowns for the top three scores in any level.

In addition to the Mighty Eagle, we have great new power-ups to help you pop even the peskiest piggy. In Angry Birds Facebook, you have the opportunity to earn power-ups by playing the game, receiving them as a “mystery gift” from a friend, or purchasing them. To begin, there are four amazing power-ups available.

As an added incentive for all “early birds”, Rovio is giving away 14 free power ups to those who check out the game on Facebook before Feb 16th. That should give you a bit of a head start when challenging your friends to see who’s the king of sling.

Angry Birds on Facebook can be played here.

Better late than never right? Well, Facebook for the iPad is finally available (officially this time). With the release of the 4.0 update, Facebook is now a universal app and optimized for the iTablet. The final build appears to be nearly identical to the version that was leaked back in July, though you can bet that the dev team have fined tuned the app and ensured that it’s ready for mass consumption.

Facebook for iPad
With high-res photos, games, chat and more, now you can get the best of Facebook—on your iPad.

- Enjoy bigger, better photos: Your photos are high-res and easy to flip through, like a real photo album
- Navigate anywhere, fast: Just tap, slide or pinch to move from one screen to another
- Play games on the go: Access your favorite Facebook apps and games, wherever you are
- Focus on what matters: Zoom in on your friends’ photos, updates and stories
- Never lose your place: Share a photo, update your status or send a message without leaving News Feed
- See who’s nearby: Check out the Nearby map to see what your friends are up to

The 4.0 update not only introduces the universal build, but also improved navigation and search functionality on the iPhone. Of course, being able to play your favourite FB games/apps in full screen mode is just icing on the cake.

Use Facebook much? If so, you’ll want to check out the newly released Facebook Messenger for the iPhone. Seen as the answer to more established apps in the market like WhatsApp Messenger (TMA Review) and Apple’s upcoming iMessenger on iOS 5, FB Messenger allows you to send messages to anyone on your friends list and even in your mobile contacts.

Facebook Messenger is a faster way to message. Reach friends right on their phones, get and send messages fast, message everyone at once and more.

• Message friends, groups of friends or anyone in your mobile contacts
• Map your location, find your friends and make plans on the go
• Get mobile notifications so you never miss a message
• Include photos so friends can see what you’re doing

And like the fairly more low-key GroupMe app, Facebook Messenger easily lets you add multiple people into the conversation, great for coordinating events and other secret rendezvous.

Ah yes, so you may have heard that there’s a hidden native Facebook app for the iPad right within the iPhone version (rumor has it that this is the same dedicated iPad app that Facebook will be releasing in the near future). By simply changing the UIDeviceFamily value from 1 to 2 within the Facebook app directory using an SSH program like iPhone Explorer (iPad must be Jailbroken), users were able enjoy FB in its full 9.7″ glory. Sadly, Facebook quickly blocked access soon after this hack was discovered. The good news though is that thanks to jailbreak dev Chpwn, you can now go through the backdoor again and check out the Facebook iPad app for yourself. All you need to do is install FaceForward from Cydia and fire up FB once more. Easy, no?  Check out the video demo after the break.

With social networking now so heavily integrated into our lives, trying to keep up with all your accounts can be quite the daunting task. And with so many different apps out there for the various services, one can grow quite tiresome of exiting one and entering the other repeatedly throughout the day. Enter the folks from Taptivate with their social tool Friends Plus. Positioned as a one stop shop, Taptivate hopes to help simplify and streamline your social network experience.

When you first open Friends Plus, you are prompted to add your social networks (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn). Tapping the “Sign In” button will get that started for you. Afterwards, if you have to add other accounts, simply tap the gear icon located in the top right and you’ll see all available networks listed. Then on all subsequent app launches, you are presented with options to visit your contacts, view posts, as well as a short list of recent posts that involve you (think twitter @mentions, Facebook comments, etc).

One of the aspects of Friends that stands out is the User Interface. It’s slick and well designed. And navigating around the app is a breeze. So you’re just in the mood to look at photos. By going into the “Posts” section, you’ll have the option of doing just that (videos as well). You’ll also be able to view by a particular service or everything mixed in at once. Some other great navigation features include linking directly to albums in Facebook, viewing post comments inline and opening links up within the apps internal browser.

Another great feature that I use a fair bit is the inclusion of Instapaper and Read It Later. For those unaware, these are services that allow you to save things like websites, articles and more for viewing later. So being able to pull articles from my feeds is a big plus for me. That said, it would have been nice to be able to access/read those clippings within the app, however the fact that I can at least use it to save things for later is useful.

Now one of the biggest features missing from the app is the integration of push notifications. Personally, completely replacing all my other social apps with this push is a necessity. Although I was a little disappointed that it isn’t present at this time, Taptivate has said that it will be compatible with Boxcar with it’s next update (v1.6). Another feature currently absent but coming in the next update is, search. Within the app you’ll be able to search all your social networks and timelines right from within the app. Useful if you’re looking for certain topics.

The last feature I want to touch on is the integration with your contacts. Once you’ve added your networks, the app will link up any names that match entries in your contact list. So what you end up with is a contact card with all their regular info, along with tabs to view their latest activity and network related stats.

Overall, Friends Plus really is a handy way to merge a handful of all your social apps into one neatly designed package. Taking into account the upcoming features in v1.6, this is certainly a great tool for all of us who have let the world of social networking embed itself so deeply into our lives.

Small World for iPad

Curiouser and curiouser.

Stories of video/computer game obsession are not new, but a news article about a mom in the UK convicted for neglecting her children and let her dogs starve to death for playing Small Worlds obsessively on Facebook stirred up  an even more bizarre controversy – this time involving Days of Wonder’s Small World for iPad, erroneously tagged as the culprit.

The unnamed mother was charged and convicted for three charges of child cruelty and two of animal neglect, and is serving a suspended sentence with 75 hours of unpaid work.

Reports from various publications and online news reports have all borrowed images and descriptions from the Small World website, even after Days of Wonder’s official statement about the matter:

While unable to spend a few minutes fact-checking to learn that their story could not be possibly true (Small World has no online play – the only digital version is the two player Small World for iPad); they were able to search our website to download graphics of the board game and further smear our name.

According to their Facebook page, Small Worlds is “a free, online 3D virtual world with amazing graphics. You can meet friends, adopt a pet, play games, do missions, listen to music, watch videos and so much more!” It’s certainly a far cry from the digital version of the hugely popular board game which requires no internet connection, only an iPad and loads of strategy, to enjoy.

The verdict is still out on whether the UK press will clear the name of Days of Wonder and their popular iPad game which is “not responsible for killing dogs or neglecting children.”

Facebook is all fun and games on the iPhone; and why shouldn’t it be? you’ve got scores ways to disseminate your preferences and personal information to the web, all through the lens of ‘social networking’. It wasn’t always that way though, and in lieu of recent official decisions such as the Digital Economy Act, the sharing of personal information makes loads of sense, at least from a witch-hunting perspective. Facebook has had to erode its privacy policies to manage stay on top of the social world; if it hadn’t, it’d be snowed under by the next aggressive phishing trend.

Just a friendly reminder to mind your own information whilst farming, mafia’ing, and facing around on the good – and now stodgily pervasive – social network agent.
