A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of reviewing Nostradamus The Last Prophecy – Part 1 (TMA Review) – the latest adventure by the Tetraedge games team, released under the watchful eye of Anuman Interactive. You play the role of Madeline, Nostradamus’ daughter, who has to unravel the enigmatic series of murders in the court of Catherine de’ Medici. Not everyone, however, has the same trust in her abilities as the great prophet and so Madeline has to disguise herself as her brother Cesar, who is out travelling.

I felt the story was off to a great start and had a nice balance of puzzles and narrative. The second part that has just been released offers even more puzzles centered around the mystic arts of Astrology, Alchemy, Pharmacy and runic symbols. Can you change the future and defeat Nostradamus’ last prophecy?

Being an Asian myself, I can say with a great deal of certainty that Asian dishes can more than hold their own with what the rest of the world can offer. There’s a reason why a good number of them are very popular in the world’s other six continents.

And as I discovered with Asian Cooking For Dummies, they’re also fairly easy to cook despite their elaborately-prepared appearances. With 60 traditional video recipes from China, India, Japan and Thailand, this easy-to-use app should make you kitchen-bound in no time.

There are only five menu items presented in a dock under the recipes already categorized by country and in true For Dummies fashion, each one is a no-brainer. Under the default Browse icon, you only need to tap Chinese Cooking for Chinese dishes, Indian Cookingfor Indian fare and so on. A Search icon allows you to search recipes by country, ingredient or preparation time.

Tapping the Tools button reveals three options namely Converter (for converting units of measure), Timer (to aid you with baking time although you probably already have that in your oven) and a Shopping List where all the ingredients that you tap in a given recipe is transferred for future shopping reference. The Share icon allows you to share any recipe with Facebook and Twitter while the Favorites section is well, where your favorite food items in the app are saved.

The meat of the app, pardon the pun, lies in the well-produced videos of the recipes themselves. To Anuman’s credit, the step-by-step presentations that start with showing what the ingredients look like (coriander, anyone?) to the actual cooking are, in the absence of a better term, truly for dummies. Even more impressive is the way they lend an air of authenticity to the actual proceedings. In keeping with the traditional nature of the dishes, an Asian-sounding woman walks you through every step of the way as each country is well-represented by a corresponding cook and background music. The bearded Indian cook, in particular is even wearing a turban while cooking.

Maybe it’s because I’m using an iPhone 3G to review this app but for some reason, some videos can’t be loaded and viewed. Good thing each recipe also comes in text form with clear and detailed instructions so you can still actually cook them even without watching how they’re done.

As for the recipes themselves, most of the dishes presented here are those that are already familiar to most people. Among them, are the Hot and Sour Soup, Sweet and Sour Pork and Fried Rice from China; Chicken Curry, Fish Tandoori and Mutton Biryani from India; Sashimi, Miso Soup and Sushi with Nori Seaweed from Japan; and Chili King Prawns and Lime Soup and Spicy Seafood Salad from Thailand. Entrees dominate the recipes while appetizers and dessert items are quite limited.

Since the app is called Asian Cooking for Dummies, it doesn’t leave much room for something more exotic or adventurous. And I kinda lament the fact that only four Asian countries are represented as there are many other exciting recipes from Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and even my native Philippines. While I can understand that much of the app’s $3.99 price tag can be attributed to its elaborate efforts. I do hope Anuman continues to provide updates that include more recipes from yes, other parts of the region. As it is, Asian Cooking for Dummies already provides a generous sampler of delicious Asian recipes that should keep you busy for a while. Yes, they don’t look like a piece of cake by any means but thanks to this app, preparing them is not exactly rocket science either.

Tetraedge Games are currently one of the more prominent players on the App Store’s adventure gaming scene. Porting various PC adventure titles, they are responsible for such great games as Jules Verne’s Return To Mysterious Island, Jules Verne’s Secrets Of The Mysterious Island, Dracula: The Path Of The Dragon and the most recent Egypt The Prophecy. This time they have graced us with an adventure centered around the famous prophet, Nostradamus, with the release of their latest title – Nostradamus The Last Prophecy – Part 1.

Nostradamus The Last Prophecy is a classic first-person adventure game, though it has a few original concepts. A mysteries series of death is plaguing the court of Catherine de’ Medici. After the most recent death of the castle’s librarian, the Queen turns to the famous philosopher Nostradamus for help. Alas, the prophet is too old and weak to handle the matter personally so has no choice but to send his daughter, disguised as his absent son Cesar, to investigate the matter.

Nostradamus uses the same engine as the previous Tetraedge games, so the basics have not changed much. You have full 360 degree view control to oversee the surrounding areas with all hotspots highlighted with handy icons, indicating the possible action. In addition to the world around you, a place you’re bound to spend some time in is the inventory screen. It is quite straightforward, with special buttons to open the diary (where various useful notes are kept as well as some puzzle solving), the recipe book (yep, cooking puzzles are part of the game) and probably the remarkable option – to switch disguises between plain old Ann and Cesar.

In terms of playing the game any adventure game fan will be happy to find Nostradamus quite rich in various puzzles. Most of the puzzles are dialogue or item-based, including some requiring you to go on a cooking spree to mix up stuff from fruit jam to appease the queen to anti-plague powder to convince the blacksmith to assist you. As noted above an original feature is the ability to switch disguises with various characters changing the way they interact with the protagonist based on whether they see Ann or Cesar. The story is nicely told and the first part of this two-part adventure should last an average player around 4-5 hours of gameplay.

The graphics in Nostradamus are very nice, with almost a photorealistic quality (minus the characters), though sadly no support for the Retina display is present. The sound is great, with ambient music setting the mood and full voiceovers for all interactions. Nostradamus fully supports iOS4 multitasking, so you don’t have to fear any incoming calls. And the interface is intuitive to a point where you don’t even think about it. The only thing I could wish for on the technical side is probably some kind of social network integration, preferably GameCenter for achievements.

Nostradamus The Last Prophecy – Part 1 is definitely among the better adventure games out there. It weaves together an original storyline involving the great prophet, a mysterious series of murders and a girl-detective in disguise, not to mention the excellent gameplay with original puzzles thrown in for good measure. Paint it with excellent graphics and we have a tapestry that would make any adventure game fan gitty with excitement.

With this I declare Nostradamus The Last Prophecy – Part 1 officially touched!

Just recently, we posted about the release of Return to Mysterious Island – Deluxe Edition for the iPad, which many of you know on the iPhone as Jules Verne’s Return To Mysterious Island (TMA Review). Unlike the iPhone version however, which was re-engineered for the smaller screen, the “Deluxe Edition” is a straight port of the popular PC game. For those of you who’ve not played this fun and engaging 1st person adventure, here’s the basic premise:

While participating in the famous solo round-the-world sailing expedition – the Jules Verne Trophy – the navigator, Mina, strands on a island without any way to contact the emergency services. Therefore the courageous young woman will only rely on her senses and her ability to recuperate, before trying to escape the island. However, a mysterious shadow hovers over this land, cut off from the world, which does not appear so uninhabited as it seemed at first sight…

Its original price point of $9.99 may have dissuaded some of you from picking this up on the iPad, but now that it’s currently on sale for $0.99 , RtMI’s certainly become a nice bargain for hours of puzzle and mystery solving.

Retour sur l'Ile Mystérieuse - Deluxe Edition Anuman, Return to Mysterious Island – Deluxe Edition $0.99

Game Features:

  • Splendid photorealistic pre-rendered graphics that show nature left to itself where the lush tropical vegetation is queen.
  • Original interactive inventory that allows to combine and create many new items and tools.
  • A scenario that offers freedom in solving the puzzles and in progressing in the adventure that is rewarded by a scoring system.
  • A good way to discover the novel and to give players the desire to read or reread it.
  • A Sound ambience that perfectly illustrates the paradise though disturbing atmosphere of the island.
  • Voices and text in 5 languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish)
