Week in Review – Lite Apps Roundup

liteapps2

Last week, we saw some big name titles go lite on us. This week, the fun keeps on rollin’ as developers continue the trend of releasing free versions of their games and apps. While many of these lite apps won’t offer you hours of gameplay, they’ll certainly give you a taste of whether it’s worth your hard earned dosh. Those looking at trying out new Tower Defenses can now test out geoDefense (one of the most challenging and fun TDs at the App Store) and Hudson’s brand new ElementalMonter TD. Players can also test drive some of the most enjoyable time management games in Supermarket Mania and Hospital Havoc. Gameloft’s Wild West Guns, one of the best “light gun” shooters  on the iDevice also goes lite, along with Vector Tanks and Sway.  Be sure to check out the entire list below for some quality lite apps.

Infographic: Pixel People by the numbers

pixel-people-ios

To celebrate both the successful launch of Pixel People and Valentine’s Day, Chillingo and LambdaMu Games have released a fact-filled Pixel People Infographic. The highly addictive town building sim (which Eric touched on in the recent New Games roundup) is the latest on the block to drain the iOS population of their productivity. If you’re already deep into the game, you’ll appreciate the numbers found within, like how in the past 2 weeks, 232 years were spent playing Pixel People, or 19,680,022 clones were spliced. And as a V-Day’s special, all in-game Utopium prices have been slashed for a limited time. If you’ve yet to check it out, you have nothing to lose (other than your time) as the sim builder is completely free to play.

Angry Birds – A 10 Year Retrospective

The Intro In Three Paragraphs Or Less

roundup-20200126-ab-intro

So I heard a little rumor that Angry Birds turned 10 recently.  As such, I thought I’d whip up a special roundup chronicling the early years of the franchise, as well as share some thoughts on where the IP has been and where it might be going.  Now I’m going to level with you, I am not a die-hard fan of the main series or the property as a whole.  I have nothing against the birds, and I certainly enjoyed the first outing, but the whole package didn’t grip me enough to make me want to spend hours and hours with each iteration of the game as it was released.

After a weekend with the iPhone 5, here’s what I think of the latest Apple device

After countless browser reloads on UPS’ tracking page and waiting for the UPS truck to show up, my pre-ordered iPhone 5 (Black/Slate 32GB) finally arrived on Friday afternoon. Upon opening the box like a slobbering kid in a candy store, I was greeted with a familiar looking iPhone, one that was noticeably taller, but not wider. Despite reading all the reviews online and hearing about how it’s 20% lighter, I was still taken aback by just how much lighter it actually felt in my hand. It almost felt like I was picking up an iPhone made entirely of plastic. And the fact that it’s 18% slimmer is also immediately apparent when held. All in all, the iPhone 5’s form factor is just sleek and sexy as hell. Factor in that I skipped the 4S, this was one heck of an upgrade.
