Apple Introduces the 7.9-inch iPad Mini

After months of endless speculation, Apple has finally unveiled the iPad Mini. This slick iPad has a 7.9 inch diagonal display and is just 7.2mm thick, which is 23% thinner than the original iPad. Phil Schiller has compared it to being as thick as a pencil and as light as a pad of paper. Here are the iPad Mini’s main features:

  • 1024×768 resolution – same as the original iPad
  • Weighs only 0.68 pounds
  • Dual-core A5 chip
  • FaceTime HD camera
  • 5 megapixel iSight on the back
  • LTE support
  • 10 Hour battery life
As for pricing, the 16Gb Wifi model starts at $329, with the 32GB going for $429 and 64GB for $529. The 16GB Wifi + LTE will start at $459. Pre-orders for the Wifi models can be made starting Oct 26th, with the official launch date being November 2nd.

NMA.tv spoofs anticipated release of iPad Mini in animated video

Leave it to Next Media Animation from Taiwan to spoof the upcoming release of the iPad Mini in yet another outrageous (and amusing) animated video. Steve Jobs, who had been portrayed as Darth Vader previously, returns to fight off Tim Cook in a failed attempt to stop the launch of the smaller iPad (Jobs had publicly dismissed the notion of a 7″ iPad back in 2010). Besides new features like a killer Android app (quite literally an app that’ll obliterate Android users off the face of the earth), NMA sees Apple fans blowing all their money on new iPad Mini accessories like the “iArm”. Check out the 2 minute video after the break.

iGear now taking pre-orders for iPad Mini Case

We’re 2 days away from the highly anticipated unveiling of the iPad Mini and accessories maker iGear is now taking pre-orders for its iPad Mini Portfolio case. While there’s no mention of its dimensions (all signs are pointing to a 7.85″ screen), the product page describes it as:

This is a well padded portfolio case for the new iPad Mini featuring PU Leather – it offers the look and feel of leather but is more durable for daily use. A magnetic cover keeps the portfolio closed when not in use for a clean and tidy look. Soft velvet lining protects the iPad Mini all around. Can be used in multiple angles for typing, movie watching, etc. Simple, elegant, very functional.

iPad Mini to be announced soon? Apple sends out invites for ‘Special Event’ on Oct 23rd

Apple has announced via press invites that a special event will be held on Oct 23rd in San Jose, with the tagline “We’ve got a little more to show you”. The ‘little’ presumably alludes to the long speculated iPad Mini, a more portable iPad that has been rumoured to have a 7.85″ (non-retina) display, a thinner body, a rear facing camera and the new lightning port. With a host of other 7″ tablets flooding the market – most notably the Nexus 7 – it is expected that the iPad Mini’s price point will be an attractive one, possibly in the $249-299 range for a 16GB model. Here are several mockups of what it could look like next to an iPad 2/3.

Control Insect robots from your iPhone and iPad

Sure we’ve seen plenty of iPhone controlled helicopters in the past (like the HELO TC Assault) and even the wacky Sphero ball, but what about insect robots? Brought to you by iHelicopters, an online reseller specializing in i-remote toys and gadgets, the iPhone controlled Beetle and Bug puts you in the driver’s seat of these creepy mechanical critters. By plugging in an IR transmitter into your iDevice and using the free i-Robot app, you’ll be able to move them all about from a distance of up to 6 meters away. Sadly, you won’t be able to make them fly, but just making them crawl near your girlfriend should scare them plenty.

iPad Mini screen protector product page up on Zagg.com

The iPad Mini hasn’t even been announced yet, but that hasn’t stopped numerous manufacturers in China from selling cases based on (presumably) leaked specs. Now Zagg, makers of the ZAGGFolio Keyboard Case (TMA review) and  invisibleShields for mobile devices, has added a landing page on their website for the Apple iPad Mini Screen Protector. You can’t actually buy it yet, or even pre-order the Mini’s invisibleShield, but it shows that it’s coming soon and there’s an option to submit your email to be notified when it does become available. As it stands, the only option mentioned is the Screen Coverage for $24.99, though it maybe safe to assume that a full body protection coverage option will be offered at a later time.

Mockup of iPad Mini by Nickolay Lamm / InventHelp

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple’s ‘Asian component suppliers’ have begun mass production of the iPad Mini. Citing two sources, production of the upcoming iPad’s screens is said to have started last month, with both LG Display and AU Optronics being named as the manufacturers of the display. The same sources confirmed that the iPad Mini will feature a 7.85-inch LCD screen and that it will have a lower resolution than the iPad 3. It has been speculated in the past that the Mini will have a resolution 1024 x 768 pixels. Two days earlier, Japanese blog Macotakara claimed that production of the smaller tablet has already begun in Foxconn factories located in Brazil.
