10 New App Store Games To Watch [April 8 - 14]

monday-roundup-04152013-intro

Once again I’ve tried to bring you a nice variety of games to consider this week, and you’ll be happy to know that there are no infinite runners on my list this time around.  There is a rather addictive strategy game called Tower Zoo, however.  The mechanics are simple, there are plenty of levels to challenge you, and when you get done whopping – or getting whopped – by the computer AI you can take on your neighbor in pass and play mode.  If you’re more of a “poker with an edge” sort of player you should consider taking Alice of Hearts for a spin.  This game has puts an interesting twist on the Wonderland fable, it has a pretty slick presentation, and it does a good job of using poker hands for combat that feels different than other games of its style.  If you’re just looking for some visceral action then Fisticuffs: An Arcade Boxing Game might fit the bill.  It’s a simple boxing game with a small but diverse roster of fighters that’s fun and could be something great if people play it and encourage the developers to add more to it.

Gravity.Duck in Review – What Goes Up… Must Go Sideways

review-gravity-duck-1

Ravenous Games has a decent collection of retro-looking casual games piling up in their catalog, though I’d wager that they are best known for their League of Evil series.  Gravity.Duck is nothing like those games aside from the graphics style.  For some reason that bothered me at first, but it didn’t take long until I got completely hooked on this one.  In fact, I think I’ve played it more than both of the League Of Evil games combined.  Ravenous has one again nailed the art of the casual gaming experience, and I for one am happy to indulge. 10 New App Store Games To Watch [April 1 - 7]

monday-roundup-04082013-intro

I bet you know where this intro is going, but just in case you’re a bit skeptical, this was another week full of new iOS game releases.  The folks over at Warner Brothers actually managed to release a decent brawler focused on an alternate D.C. universe where no one knows who the good and bad guys are.  In Injustice: Gods Among Us you’ll take control of anyone from Superman to Harley Quinn as you duke it out in teams of three to see who reigns supreme when there are no rules.  If you like shooting gallery style games then the clear choice for you this week is Overkill 2.  This sequel ups the ante in many ways, but most importantly it offers more than 30 weapons with lots of customization options.  Adventure game fans might want to dig in to Paradigm Shift, as long as you don’t mind the whole “zombie apocalypse” theme.  In addition to actually having consequences for your actions, the game offers multiple endings for those so inclined to seek them out.

10 New App Store Games To Watch [March 25 - 31]

monday-roundup-04012013-intro

As always I’ve tried to bring you a diverse list of games this week, though looking back through the titles it seems a decent portion of them have some sort of RPG elements in them.  For those looking for a basic brawler with some attitude, you might give WWE Presents: Rockpocalypse a try.  The premise is silly and the dialog does get repetitive before long, but the fact that the game doesn’t take itself seriously actually makes it palatable to play.  If you prefer your action with a little more of a western tilt then Gamevil has Lost Memory for your perusal.  The game offers both sword slashing and gun slinging combat action, as well as a “am I the good guy or bad guy” storyline.  Maybe you want your combat to be a little more tribal instead?  Tribe Survival is an interesting alternative that’s not quite like anything else I’ve played on the App Store.

Mac Deals: Best time to buy a Mac, iPhone and iPad

mac-deals-when-to-buy

Thinking of buying a new iMac, Macbook, iPhone or iPad, but don’t exactly want to pay the full retail price found on launch day? Dealnews has analyzed over a year’s worth of Apple deals to help buyers with when to buy a Mac, or more specially, when they can expect to find the best discounts on Apple hardware. Here’s the quick rundown:

  • MacBook Pro 15.4″ with Retina Display - wait 9 months and save $350
  • iPhone 5 - wait 3 months and save $73
  • iPad (current gen) – wait 1 month and save $59
  • iPad mini – wait 3 months and save $29

Since Apple doesn’t normally slash prices on their iDevices (save for perhaps Boxing day and Black Friday), the best places to find discounts are resellers like MacMallAmazon and even the Apple eBay store (certified refurbished products). Check out the infographic after the break.

10 New App Store Games To Watch [March 18 - 24]

monday-roundup-03252013-intro

Facebook and Match 3 and Town Builders, Oh My!  I never would have expected that one of the most entertaining releases for me this week would be a port of a Facebook game, but leave it to Popcap to accomplish that feat with Solitaire Blitz.  It is one minute competitive solitaire, and it’s rather addictive as well.  Games like Triple Town and sliding puzzle games both make me go “eh”, but when you combine them in the likes of Alien Hive I sit up and go “hmm”.  This game comes from the developers of Sporos, and it’s on track to be as laid back and intriguing as that game was.  Finally, Warner Brothers brings us an iOS port of another Facebook game, this time a town builder based off of the legend that is The Wizard Of Oz.  I haven’t decided if I’m going to delve into The Wizard Of Oz Game yet, but I am impressed that they were willing to actually integrate it with the classic film, even to the point of using the various characters’ film likenesses.

CARROT updated to V3.0, now free for a day

carrot-todo-app

CARROT, the quirky todo list “with a personality”, has received its next major update (V3.0) and adds three most-requested features from its users: the ability to set reminders/due dates, repeating tasks and Siri Integration (have Siri add tasks into CARROT for you). But since this is not your ordinary todo app, these first have to be unlocked by actually completing tasks on your list (mark tasks as completed, score points and level up). Think of it as an incentive to get productive. Just don’t expect it be as complex as Things (TMA Review) or OmniFocus; it was designed to be fast, simple and most of all, fun to use. CARROT is now free for a day as well, so grab it for your iPhone, unlock all the goodies and get busy.

Titles from from other publishers – both big and small – have also knocked off a few bucks off their games. Most of the deals are likely good through Monday, so have a look at the full list of app sales after the break.
