Last week MirrorCase announced its iPad case on Kickstarter with a splash, raising about 75 percent of their goal in the project’s first week. Already available for iPhone 4, the MirrorCase case design uses a high-quality mirror to reflect back any image that is in front of the device, allowing users to capture images and video from a more natural angle.
I always like a week full of good games, which means I really liked last week. For those of you that just can’t get enough, Rovio has returned to their flagship franchise and taken it multi-player with Angry Birds Friends. The result is classic game play with a few twists and a social aspect – as long as you have a Facebook account, that is. If you love gamebook adventures but for some odd reason are tired of the Tin Man Games offerings (hopefully just taking a little break), you might want to check out Sorcery! Yeah, it’s a port of one of the original books written by that Steve Jackson guy, so it should be pretty entertaining. Hidden object fans will want to take a look at The Curse of the Werewolves. It doesn’t do anything to stretch the genre, but it’s a solid offering that doesn’t come from Big Fish Games or G5 Entertainment, which is enough to pique my interest.
Write for Dropbox, an intuitive writing app with a slick interface, is now free for the iPhone after the release of its iPad version. Using Dropbox to sync all your work, the app opens to a blank note so you can quickly jot down your ideas or notes quickly. You’ll also find an extra row of convenient keys above the keyboard that provides shortcuts to popular Markdown syntax. And aside from the host of sharing options available, one of my favorite little features is the cursor trackpad that lets you easily move the cursor around the screen and select desired text.
A good adventure game has a balanced story. It gives you enough to keep you interested but not so much that you have no reason to continue playing. The puzzles are fair and at least some of them should be challenging. There will be both inventory based challenges and riddles that simply challenge the mind. In a perfect world there would be NPC interaction as well, but sometimes the story might prohibit that. And even though you might have to do a lot of traipsing back and forth, you won’t mind because you’re too into the game. Vanished: The Island is a good adventure game.
A little over a week after Apple announced that the 45 billion App Store downloads mark had been passed (which took just over 4 months to get from 40 to 45 billion), the count down for 50 Billion downloads has begun. As with the previous grand giveaways, the lucky person who downloads the 50 billionth app will win a $10,000 App Store Gift Card. But as an added twist, the next 50 iOS users to download an app will also score a $500 Gift Card. In other words, the contest will end after the 50,000,000,050th app has been downloaded. For the complete details, head over to the 50 Billion Downloads page on iTunes, where you’ll also find the Top 25 Paid/Free iPhone and iPad apps of all time.
GAMEVIL, best known for their RPGs and having just released the anticipated Diablo-like dungeon crawler Dark Avenger, is now offering a handful of their “Retro” iOS games for $0. From the fun and casual titles like Air Penguin and KAMI RETRO, to the popular JRPG series ZENONIA (parts 1 through 3), a good selection GAMEVIL games can now be downloaded completely free – for a limited time. Check out the complete freebie links after the break.
What do you get when you take two artists from a well known company and set them on their own to design mobile games? Apparently you get a family friendly cave flyer style game that takes place under water with fish. Fin Friends is one of those games that are nice, but other than some flashy graphics it doesn’t do much to differentiate itself from the pack. If you like cave flyer or infinite runner style games you’ll enjoy Fin Friends, but don’t expect to see any revolutionary game play elements here. Continue reading…
Just when you thought you’d wasted enough time slinging your way through all those Angry Birds games, Rovio has just released the next instalment in the popular franchise. Aptly named Angry Birds Friends, you play against your Facebook friends in this free to play game, and weekly tournaments will be held (the first being May 6th), where power-ups such as the King Sling, Super Seeds and Birdquake can be employed to your advantage.
Whether you’re a student, writer or just someone who likes using big words, the Thesaurus is undoubtedly one of the best tools to have around. The largest resource on the web is Thesaurus.com (owned by Dictionary.com), and they’ve recently released Thesaurus Rex, a universal iOS app that has 550,000 synonyms & antonyms and features several handy functions, like sorting by relevance or A-Z, filtering results in real time by complexity, and more.
