Thread: OS 4.0 (Summer)

  1. #1

    Default OS 4.0 (Summer)

Here are the bulletin points I was able to fetch from several feeds:

Multitasking (the Apple way without big chunks of performance or battery life going down with it)

Folders (you can have now more then 2000 apps on the device)

    Homescreen wallpapers

    Unified Inbox

    Organise your inbox by threads

    Open email attachments with apps

iBooks for the iPhone!!!!!!! I cannot stress enough how lucky this makes me. It also wirelessly syncs with your ipad. Buy it once read it everywhere.

Apples own social networking for games called Game Center. Xbox Live for the iPhone No more open feint, crytal, plus+, etc. Yeah! I called it back in the days and El Jobso answered! Can anyone confirm VoIP?

Apples iAd service. (Since it's build into the OS you won't get out of your app when you "click" on a add)

    Yea, there's VoIP.

They are taking a good step towards pleasing customers. Except I have no reason to update to 4.0 since my iPod Touch 2nd Gen won't run multi-tasking. Plus, I already have a lot of these features with my jailbreak.

Folders - we have Categories since OS2.x
Wallpapers - you don't see much of it behind the icons, do you?
Unified inbox - I hope this can be turned OFF!
    iBooks - one more Stanza?
iAds - DD A great reason not to update!

    For real, what's NEW ??

Oh please. Jailbreakers save the crap. Legit users want those features and it's not like you'd pay for the upgrades anyway. So just save it and pirate the cracked version once it comes out.

Here are some of my thoughts copied from another board:

Multitasking is nice as long as it doesn't come at a price. I don't miss multitasking at the moment and I guess I'll only use it for those situations where a incomming call would disrupt a program otherwise. Like Navigon. Never happened to me since I don't get many calls but I guess it's nice to keep the nevi running if I get a call. I don't care much for Internet radio so I don't get all the pandora hype.

iBooks is actually the #1 announcement for me. I read a lot and I hoped that apple would release the iBook app on the iPhone. Togeher with wireless syncing your pages and bookmarks this is really cool. I can read on the ipad at home and start the app on the iPhone when I'm not home and continue reading where I left on the ipad. Very very cool. I thought if the iBook app would come to the iPhone I would loose interest in the ipad, but with the sync feature I don't really the the lure of the ipad weakened.

Game center was the big surprise. I said it in another discussion about all the other networks out there (Plus+, open feint, crystal, etc. ) that Apple should do something like this so we don't have a billion different networks. I have the feeling that if apple cannot pull off a spot on gaming network then there's no one. I guess this will become a really big boost to the gaming library. I'd be very nervous now if I'd be Sony or nintendo. A full blown gaming network on the iDevices will most likely give Apple a even bigger chunk of the mobile gaming market than they have gained in such short time.

Another big thing that gets little attention are the myriad of new APIs for the SDK. The new accelerametor routines should help devs a lot with smoother controls. There are a bazillion of them available but having them directly in the SDK should speed up development quite a lot. The biggest impact will most likely be the direct access to iCal. I forsee a very bright future of a lot of to do lists and so forth. Actually I'm getting a bit excited over this for my own little project. The new APIs might look like a small think in the wake of such marketing bombs like multitasking and game center but I guess they will have the biggest impact.

New mail app. I have only one mail account that I check from my phone but I guess that the unified mailbox is heavensend for many users. For me is the threaded view the best thing to look forward to in the new mail.app.

iAd were expected but they're really looking cool. Sure they're ads but when they're interesting I has nothing against them.

All in all I think this is really a great upgrade for 3GS users and still a good one for 3G.

Ok, and just a point - there will be no way BUT to upgrade to os 4.0 - or you'll miss about 70% of the new software that will require the new OS. So we'll have to eat up those iAds. On the other hand, I really don't see them that much of a problem - we have them already in quite a lot of apps and games and having them be with no performance decrease dut to full OS integration should be nice.

Biggest point - no multitasking on 3G - whatever - with the amount of memory on the older phones I barely have enough to keep one app running But PUSH on the device itself sounds sweet - and is the Holy Grail for all those iPad Wifi and iPod Touch users

    Local push notifications.

Applications can send notifications without the need of a external server. In the keynote they named a TV schedule app that can send you a notification when a scheduled show is about to start.

In an article here, I read of an 'iPod out', can anyone fill me in on that? Does that mean apps can use the song library, like for example the app Touch DJ can now directly import songs from the music library?

I guess this has more to do with the TV/VGA connector, but I'm not certain.

I just updated my 3GS to the Gold Master of iOS 4 and everything works well.
