Default iPad will not tether to the iPhone

    This in from 9to5Mac:

Poor Jezper got the answer he wasn't hoping for: No from the Jobs himself. Curt, not kind, as per usual:
The question was a good one, and one we've had on our minds as well:

    I'll keep it short.

I'm Jezper from Sweden, a long time Apple fan, currently about to replace the very last computer at home with a brand spanking new iMac i7. I'm also awaiting the release of the iPad. However, I have one question:

Will the wifi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?

Two devices, based on the same OS, with already built-in technology to share one data plan suggests a secondary contract could possibly be redundant.

From the look of your keynote, where the iPad sits well between my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, I was hoping the three of them could interact as seamless as possible.

    All the best,
Jezper Söderlund[a famous DJ in his own right]

    Jobs' answer?
    No.

    Sent from my iPhone

We got the header information below to help prove that this one was legit. Oh, and yes, Jobs is still rocking that 3.1.2 iPhone.

I wasn't aware that we could do tethering from the iPhone at all yet (at least my iPhone doesn't have that option in the settings). But it makes sense since you cannot connect the iPhone to the iPad like you can with a laptop that has a USB port (since the iPad has none).

It's under Settings -> Network -> Set up Internet Tethering and works over USB and Bluetooth.

Maybe it's locked on AT&T phones.

Yep. Kind of a downer. But then again, I'm sure it will be soon be hacked by the jailbreaking community.

Most carriers, if I'm not mistaken, have tethering blocked unless you add that feature to your plan. My regional carrier just recently blocked it's users from tethering blackberries to their laptops. Funny how that happened right about the time they introduced their line of netbooks, which require an additional 3G data plan if you buy one through them.

Must be as it's NOT an option on my phone stock iPhone 3G. Unless it's an option only the iPhone 3GS?
