Thread: Osx86

    Default Osx86

Okay, since I cannot afford a Mac at the moment I've gone and ordered a mainboard that is compatible with MacOS and OSX 10.6.2 and will hopefully shortly be a OSX user too.

I also ordered a shiny new Magic mouse and a USB-bluetooth adapter.

I hope everythign arrives soon and it will work properly. Has anybody here any experiences in that regard?

Way back in the day, I ran a hacked OSx86, but it was really, really hacked together and wasn't that fun outside of its geekiness to play with. I bit the bullet, saved for a long time and bought an iBook. Since then I've not looked back and been very happy, though at times, I am short a few pieces of software.

Nothing really to give as advice though... sorry.

I spent a goodly amount of time enjoying Project 86 though.

That's where I got my infos from so far. It was the best source I could find.

The kind of horsepower I need would only be provided by the bigger Apple machines so I had to save a lot longer for the real deal

I'm really looking forward to this since I would finally be able to get into IPhone programmnig. It's been so many years since I last did some windows programming and I really want to see how I get along with the iPhone SDK.

So my Apple parcel should arrive tomorrow and hopefully my new mainboard will too since my Win7 beta runs out today and I'm not going to install vista just for the short period until I can start with OSX.

I asked at the other board I frequent and I guess it couldn't hurt to ask here too:

What are the tips and tricks I have to know? What are necessary programs? Which websites do I have to visit? Can I wear light gray turtelnecks or has it to be black from now on? Am I a Mac now or am I still a PC? Or am I a bastard child that nobody want's to play with anymore? Is there a secret club of cool kids and am I eligible to enter now? Can I stream xvids to my 360 from a Mac?

I have gotten some answers already but I am especially interested in a Usenet reader since that's where I get all my series from (German TV just plainly sucks since we dub everything into german). I guess I have to die without my weekly fix of HIMYM and BBT.

Today I got my Snow Leopard and my Magic Mouse. The mouse is so incredible. I LOVE the weight and feel. I Can't wait to see her in action.

So I replaced the mainboard in my break and started the OSX installation but it doesn't seem to work.

A bit of browsing through the insanely mac forum seem to indicate that I have to set some certain Bios settings. I'll try that once I get back home.

    Quick update.

After I messed up my first install by copying bootloaders around, I got it perfectly running today. Everything works, including 3D (and WoW).

I nearly wet myself when iPhoto started to recognize faces in my library. Very very nice.

The iPhone SDK works fine as well and I tested the simulator with a quick hello world.
