    Default Guerilla Bob Review

Guerilla Bob in Review – Commandante Bob is out for blood! John Gore’s blood!

Guerilla Bob is one of the App Store’s most hyped and anticipated games. The last time I saw this much hype was just before Chillingo’s MiniGore came out. I know many of you may want to strangle me for saying this, but I think that blockheaded game got lucky. Will Guerilla Bob make me say the same thing? No, and here’s why…

Guerilla Bob is a dual-stick shooter. Thankfully, it is reminiscent of that rare classic console Action/Adventure title rather than a survival shooter. It follows the story of a broken friendship and lots of revenge. One friend, John Gore decided to follow the life of crime and money, while the other, Bob, joined the army to become a national hero. Jealous, John framed Bob as a corrupt soldier and kicked him out of the army. And now it’s time for payback!
Gameplay is rather straightforward – you follow the narrow path set for you by the developers which includes: eliminating enemies, collecting powerups and weapons. There are a total of 3 weapons with 5 (I think) levels of upgrade. This includes the machine gun, rocket launcher and flamethrower. All weapons have their own uses and depending on your situation, you’ll find yourself switching from one to the other throughout the game. Overall gameplay feels polished, though I do miss greater variety of weapons/power ups.

By the way, there are loads of enemies in Guerilla Bob. From the common machine gunner and explosive barrel thrower, to the epic boss fight with the demonic John Gore, there are loads.
What really makes Guerilla Bob stand out is its amazingly stylish graphics and sounds. The backgrounds and surrounding buildings take you right into the action. Enemies are rendered with careful detail and distinct character. The game also features both day and night levels, both of which look splendid. The lighting effects work wonders and the most amazing thing is all of this eyecandy has zero lag on my iPhone 3G. The music and sound effects immerse you in the atmosphere of the game. I Especially love Bob’s excellent voice-overs while he dishes out mayhem and destruction.
For social addicts Guerilla Bob features Chillingo’s recently rolled out platform, Crystal. I’m in two minds about it though – while it looks excellent and the achievement list is above all praise, the sheer amount of social platforms for the iPhone makes me dizzy. The game is worth about 5-6 hours of gameplay on easy difficulty, and on hard it is far beyond my skills to cope. At the same time I was really frustrated by the fact that as soon as you run out of lives you have to start over from the beginning of the game. I would really like to see the option to start over from the last level, at least on easy.
Guerilla Bob is a polished piece of Dual-Stick shooting heaven sprinkled with gorgeous graphics and excellent voiceovers. At the same time, I feel it could use more variety in weapons and power-ups. It also needs a revamping of the continue system. Regardless, it is a must have for both fans and casual players which will provide hours of joyous mayhem and destruction.
With this I declare Guerilla Bob officially touched!

You know, I never can do well at Minigore. Comparisons of the two games made me think twice before getting this game. Perhaps that is a mistake by me.

Got any GB promo codes for the daily forum contest? I will rank this at number one. haha

Personally, I feel they're both good games. Each has its own distinct feel and charm and both will give dual stick shooter fans a run for their money. There'll certainly be fans who'd prefer one over the other...

as for promos, I unfortunately don't have any for the daily contest

When I first played Guerilla Bob I was very impressed, especially with the graphics and the menues. But I have two complains on this game. First, I found it very weird that you couldn't control the speed of Bob. Whatever direction you are holding the pad, he still runs the same speed. Second, if you lose all of your 10 lifes, you have to start over every single level. And that is really annoying. Otherwise a really good game...!

I thought Guerrilla Bob was a fun game, and I agree with the save issue. The other thing that bothered me was that you really don't get true 360 degree firing. He appears to shoot in 5 degree increments. It appears that they've released a patch that fixes that save problem, however. They are also working on more levels for the next update. The nice thing about GB is that it is level based instead of just a "run in one area until you die" type scenario. Now don't get me wrong, I like both types, but I think we need more of the GB style.
