Have you had any severe software problems with your iTouch? Did you solve them? Where did you find information?

Here are some of the problems I've experienced:

Trying to do a hard reset (hold Sleep/Wake while pressing Home till Apple icon appears) my device got stuck on the Apple icon screen. It refused to reboot, like it was stuck in an infinite loop. Eventually the battery would drain. I posted my problem on Apple support forum, and someone directed me an obscure Apple webpage that listed an weird procedure to "reboot". The method as described didn't work precisely, but I found a variation that eventually got me to a "Restore iPod?" dialog box in iTunes. From there I was able to fix the problem.

My settings icon disappeared! I could still get to settings using the search function, but no more icon. I eventually wiped and restored from backup.

In Safari, I am unable to save a bookmark as an icon on the home screen. I don't know why this option has disappeared from my device--it is still shown in the operator's manual.

I've had a few download issues where it completely freezes itunes and hides the program.

Quite annoying, I have yet to solve the issues, but plan to take care of it when I finish grading papers.

My old 2g iTouch froze while rebooting once (apple logo on screen). Thought it was a low battery issue so i plugged it into the charger but that did nothing. After leaving it in the charger I think I tried to press the home button and power button too. At some point maybe 1/2 hour later the "connect to iTunes" prompt came on (big sigh of relief, thought I had bricked it somehow). Did connect it and had to restore from prior backup not restore to "new". It worked fine till the "wet pocket incident" killed it

my sons 2g froze up and was trouble because he password locked it. Could not connect it to iTunes or turn it on without the password which he could not enter because it was froze. At some point while connecting it to iTunes (after many tries) the enter password prompt did come up so he could get it back that way. This is why I do not password protect mine (3g iTouch) anymore!

If you are experiencing such trouble, are you Jailbreaked or stock? Do you restart it often or rarely? Is it backed up? It should be!

A few months after I got my iPod, it completely froze while I was playing music. The iPod did not dim and I could not exit the player nor could I restart it. It shut down after playing music for over 8 hours. Managed to connect it to iTunes and had to restore it.

Another time my whole library was completely wiped out except for my apps & games yet it said my memory was full...

godot, I had the same exact problem as you with my iPhone 3GS and iPhone 2G. iTunes was able to detect my 2G when it got stuck on the boot logo, so I just did a normal restore. The icons got all messed up and I lost some data but I recovered. However, my 3GS wouldn't respond with iTunes or anything - nor would it charge. Hence, I was left with only 1 option, to DFU mode, which worked. But, I had to restore from a backup that was several months old because I stopped backing up after it took over 3 hours each time in iTunes. I not only lost over 3 GB worth of apps, some of which that I had paid for, but others I lost permanently like AppVault Pro because it's now off the AppStore so I can't redownload it. I'm still recovering from the effects of that, because I simply lost so much that I couldn't recover. I have so many apps that I can't even keep track of what's on my iPhone now and what isn't. It sucks. Moral of the story? Always make sure to backup, despite 3+ hours of waiting!

Is there anyway to hasten the sync/backup process? Its really a pain as there is no indicator to estimate how long the process will take.

Before the latest iTouch update mine took in the neighborhood of 24 hours! Since then I have changed some settings as to what actually gets backed up and its down to minutes. I don't recall my settings at the moment...I can post if necessary.

24 hours? For backup? I had heard that iPhones took a long time loooong ago, but now, I think it is pretty reasonable. I've never waited longer than 30 minutes at worst and that was when the software was brand new.
