My first time through, I just leveled the hull and such to get through... but there are achievements for finishing the game without dying, and also for using only the original hulll to finish.

I'm not sure they'll go freemium with DLC, but you can think of them funding the servers for this in much the same way they use DLC for HomeRun Battle 3D.
