View Full Version : If you could choose one feature for iPhone OS 4.0....

For me it would be a better way to organize my apps. The current screen flicking just doesn't work with 100+ apps. I can't remember the names of things and can't label the screens to group apps in a quick way to find them.

I purge apps from my iPhone because I just can't let them take up the real estate (I don't use them often enough) and that's a shame. I know Apple is going to frown on folders -- but couldn't that be an option for people who want them?

Organisation is really bad. The 'dock' should be improved to work like in OSX - as it is now, it is just a tiny favourites bar. I wish for a toggle in each app to force-quit auto-rotation.

An easy and natural feeling solution would be to implement vertical scrolling. You scroll vertical through groups and then horizontal trough pages.

I would like to see all of the above and the FM transmitter unlocked. Why spent money on packing it inside the iPhone and then not using it?

How about something like this maybe?

That looks kind of cool, at this point I'd even just settle for an unlimited number of pages.
If no unlimited pages, at least allow me to swipe on an app in the spotlight search and delete it.

Also they really need to speed up the loading of your app organization page in iTunes for windows (though, this is prob just an issue for those of us w/ hundreds of apps).
In fact, I'd like to see them do away with iTunes altogether and just do it all via the web, it would be so much easier and convenient.
Hopefully those slick new app preview pages are a step in this direction.

Sumiguchi, That looks pretty cool! Either they give us that or some sort of folder system. Or they can have like a (optional) index page. Apps clutter is a headache!

It'd be great to have stacking so that we don't have to scroll thru multiple pages. I never remember to use the search function to locate apps. I like scrolling thru to the actual page of the app for some reason.

+1

Great video! A customizable text label per page would be nice too for organization.

I think that something like SBS settings would be awesome, the device is so much easier to use with it

Folders or some sort of useful organizational system is my number one desire. The other thing I'd like to see, and this is really a combination iPhone / iTunes thing, is the ability to sync apps from multiple iTunes installs without having to wipe the device every time. I have two different locations that I download apps to, and the collections are different, which means I have to take the apps from one machine and put them on my main machine to actually load them to my device. That's pretty annoying.

Yes, it would be nice to somehow sync with a home and work computer, not just one computer.

I don't care if the next update is in DOS, as long as they incorporate Flash!

Please, god!

They're going the HTML5 route though.

That looks pretty sweet. Never thought about that. How about multitasking. But that would be quite a big leap of faith for Apple.

I think Apple are trying as hard as possible to strongarm Adobe out of Flash. They won't be successful in the short-term - Adobe and many websites are too embedded in the lure of Flash. In a couple of years, there will be few people who will require Flash to be on anything, but unfortunately, the technology, still proprietary, is stuck in our bloody world as strong as anything is.

Have a feature that will show the estimate time frame for synchronisation. Have folders for organisation of apps.

Well, have a read through that interview with Jobs fom 1994. (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/31896381/from_the_archives_a_revealing_interview_with_steve _jobs/print)

Looking back now after 15+ years it shows that Jobs has a pretty good foresight. Sure, right now everyone is asking for flash, but forcing HTM5 might actually be better in the long run. And the iDevice has actually enough market power to push some decision makers in the right places into the right direction.

Something I'd like to see is the ability to suppress the icons for the default applications. I know you can shove them all to the end thanks to the "invisible" pages concept, but that's annoying and they still come back as you delete applications. If Apple doesn't want me to delete them off my device, fine. I can live with that. But I'd at least like to reclaim the valuable launchpad space their icons are taking up, seeing as the only ones I ever use are notes and photos.

Definitly multitasking! Yeah, you can be on a phone call and use one other app, or listen to music and use one other app, but there really is a need to run more than one app at a time. This will be even more of an issue once people get their hands on the iPad (runs the same OS as the iPhone). Copy and pasting from one app to another is good, but when you have to do multiple then the ability to quickly go from one app to the other several times would just make it so much better.

The other thing is Flash! Once Flash is available on all the droid devices, Apple will be left behind. It will be two years at best before HTML5 even comes close to replacing some of the basic uses that Flash is now used for, and it certainly won't replace it completely. With so much Flash content out there, Apple's devices are NOT the best way to surf (despite their claims).

I don't think multitasking is the answer -- at least not with the limited batteries we have. Quick loading services that launch in the background when needed or maybe some sort of flipping between active apps (where no processing is taking place when they aren't active on screen) may make more sense.

I think multitasking will be more of an issue on the iPad, but I think it has very limited usefulness on a small device like an iPhone. I struggle with managing all my open windows on a 19 inch monitor for my PC, I don't think I want to try that on my iPod Touch screen :)

Multitasking is a MUST at this point in time. The fact that we don't have the ability to run true background apps is appalling at this point in time. It doesn't help that I operate on an iPhone 2G and don't get PUSH so hopefully something like 4.0 could assist in multitasking?

I assume that it'd take a bit of a toll on batteries, sadly. Still, I'm willing to take that hit.

That's looks amazing if you ask me, a great way to get from say, page 3 to page 8 in a flash. I also have many apps and its annoying flicking page after page.

Wish granted. (http://www.tuaw.com/2010/05/04/iphone-os-4-beta-3-adds-orientation-lock-ipod-controls-to-multi/)

I must say this really REALLY looks slick.

It does - sadly, the feature I may look forward to most is auto-rotation lock! Haha. Fortunately, the iPad looks to be cheap in Canada - only 549$ CAD (which had better fall against the Korean Won), so I might get a bit of that action first! See the homeland in July this year.
