Great news for Gameloft, great news for gamers. The Paris-based company top 24$ million revenue for iPhone games in 2009 with 9.7$ million in the first quarter alone. If that ain't success, I don't know what is. Gameloft have been responsible for some of the biggest titles last year including: James Cameron's Avatar (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2010/01/04/james-camerons-avatar-in-review-yes-it-really-is-that-good/), Modern Combat: Sandstorm (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/09/05/modern-combat-sandstorm-in-review-i’m-not-crying-i-just-got-sand-in-my-eyes/), Rogue Planet (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/11/27/rogue-planet-in-review/), Asphalt 5 (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/11/08/asphalt-5-in-review-full-throttle-racing/), Dungeon Hunter (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/10/07/dungeon-hunter-in-review-diablo-on-the-iphone/) and many more.

It's easy to see why they have topped the ranks - they gather quality devs and publish great games. Three cheers to Gameloft.

Congratulations to Gameloft! Haters will probably argue that all their games are copied in concept in a way or another but for now, it does fill in the gaps in the app store with their high quality releases.

True. But since they copied concepts of games that people would like to play on the iDevice I have no real problem with that.

I love most Gameloft games - they make an excellent job. Though their marketing focus sometimes confuses me - i.e. the amount of pushing for Rogue Planet was next to nil.

Yes, one thing that I get off Gameloft's releases is that there is usually a set standard for their releases. It might not be the best, but certainly has some polish to it

Regardless of the whole "copying" and lack of originality, it at least shows that if you make a quality game, you can be quite successful and that's the most important part for me as a gamer.
Knowing you can be successful in the app store means we can continue to expect good games from good companies.

I have spent my share on their games. However, it's funny how some of their sports titles would come out right before EA's big releases, a couple of times at least.

Of the "big" companies, EA must be the most disappointing developer in my opinion. I've pretty much given up on them producing quaility and they're just using their brand and game brands to push the games, but eventually reality sets in and the game just sucks....

Well I only have 2 EA games, but both Rockband and Auditorium are fantastic games!

EA also make great replica board games. And while The Sims3 (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/06/11/the-sims-3-review-and-tips-from-shigzeo-the-sleaze/) was much toned down from the original super RPG, it it very fun - but very limited.

My EA games are the some of the best games I have.

I purchased 6 of EA's offerings so far. NFS Shift, Auditorium, and board games. I think EA games are great. My biggest "complaint" was when they made Classic Monopoly a separate app instead of an update.

Gameloft provided 8 titles that keep/kept me entertained.Modern Sandstorm, N.O.V.A., UNO, Blades, Lets Golf, plus a few others.Ferrari GT was the only one that let me down a bit.

Both companies get kudos from me for their efforts.

I hate EA. Really. HATE in the biblical sense. I would rain hell on the entire company if I could. They managed to destroy every single brand or IP I love once pound their bloody claws into a development team.

Just take the PC/Xbox title MAss Effect 2 as recent example. Bioware promised to remain in full control over their IPs but suddenly you get milked for every single dime if you wan't the whole game. The same was with Dragon Age.

I am boycotting EA (except bioware games) on the PC/consoles since several years and I might start to do the same on te iPhone, since I found all EA games thus war very limited, buggy and unpromissing.

Auditorium might be the only honorable exception, but it's only a 1to1 port from the free flash game wich was developed with EA nowhere in sight.

My thoughts excactly!!! I too have actually boycotted EA and have no intention of buying any of their products on the iphone. Now, their sports games on the xbox are a whole other story as I'm still a fan there, but for the iphone, forget about it, not a chance.
They have lost me as a customer for the iphone, and probably not much they can do to get me back, other than maybe releasing a complete game, without bugs....good luck to you EA. Now, back to Gameloft.... ;)

i thought this was a "good job gamesoft" thread...instead it's turned into the obligatory "hate on the big guy because he's big" thread

I'm not a Gameloft hater nor lover, I just don't buy their games because most of them are bland and I play them once, maybe twice. However, I'm glad that they are successful because that probably means more "big devs" will come to the App Store

Well that's the point of ongoing discussions. They develop.

I guess a lot of first dates would be very unsuccessful if the conversation would just keep staying at the "nice weather" ;)

And just for the sake of it: My hatred for EA goes back to a time when they weren't that big and there were other bigger publishers that I liked perfectly well.

All in all I'd have to put both these companies as pretty much equals. They both have there gems, and they both have released crap. kudos to them if they're makin profits. It'd be nice to see some savings passed on to the consumer but that will never happen because we'll all still pay what they want.

I think EA's board games are good, but as far as the Sports games, they do lack somewhat in the graphics (thinking of Tiger Woods 09 in particular). I haven't tried Gameloft's sports titles, so I can't make a judgement there.

It's really only turned into a hate on EA, I really don't see much hate towards Gameloft...
And I too would have to put Gameloft on par with EA for iphone development, and I would put Gameloft way ahead of EA in that category...

Actually, Gameloft has kind of passed on the savings with their famous "$.99" blowout sales last year. I'm pretty sure you can expect it again at some point so if you are patient, good things will come to you.... :)
Also, they (Gameloft) appear to have gone for a more middle of the road pricing scheme of $6.99, rather than EA's new releases at $9.99...
All in all, another reason to appreciate Gameloft more than EA! ;)
