2x the space, more battery life, HD resolution display of the same size (apps will be upscaled), HD camera.

I hope they unlock the FM tansmitter which is build into even the 3G.

Naturally, it will be better at all of the above. By better, though, I hope 'better' is nicely defined. I for one don't want a 5mp camera in a phone - the quality and noise levels are attrocious.

If the iPhone gets any bigger, it will be unwieldy so I hope that isn't the case. But, Apple are competing with numbers. Some competitors offer bigger, higher res displays which is a big boon for casual users. Numbers sell and Apple, a company which usually hide tech numbers may have to follow a different path.

But, I hope that the iPhone 4G gets:
-Better battery
-Better sound (if possible)
-IPS screen (am I dreaming?)
-Apple A4 processor
-A fully stable OS with better file structure support so that work truly can go on the road!

I would say a definite no on the bigger screen.

The camera is a no-brainer. I will probably also be based on the Apple A4 processor. The most interesting stuff will probably in the OS 4.0

do you know what OS 4.0 will add?

@Swords - I don't think we will see High Def screen - that is impossible in the form factor and/or too expensive. The iPhone 3GS can already playback hi-def content, but I have not seen if it can spit that content to a TV. It does at least internally playback 1080 and 720p.

Hi-Def video playback on the iPhone 3GS is real (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/07/13/hi-def-video-playback-on-the-iphone-3gs-is-real/)
iPhone HD – more hi-res evidence emerges (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/08/25/iphone-hd-more-hi-res-evidence-emerges/)

There are some rumors regarding multitasking, but I onlybelieve it once I see it on my iPhone.

Let's say "higher-than-now def" then. I don't necessarily think it would be 720p or 1080p. But even a few PPI would make a big difference.

Aside from the usual size/speed/camera mp I doubt there will be much upgraded. I think at this point they are going to have to focus more on software upgrades.

I think there is a high chance the screen will be upgraded. Most newer phones have almost HD resolutions, see HTC HD2 for example.

But the main problem will be implementation, since the bulk of their apps now is based on the original resolution.

If it could hit iPad's resolution then it will be great so devs only need to submit 2 versions of their apps

Well, with the iPad's release, the apps. will eventually be "upgraded" to higher res. so I wouldn't rule that possibility out. It all depends on how the 4.0 OS will handle all this I guess. I'm hoping they double the ram, upgrade the processor (although i'm not too sure if it will be the new A4) and improve the cam a little bit. But the main stuff will come with the 4.0 OS upgrade. It most likely will have some of the new stuff that the iPad has, plus some limited form of multitasking.

I don't know, but Flash needs to be one of them. I really have no opinion, because I'm with a local CDMA carrier and they said that they would never get the iPhone because it
has different hardware than what they support. They're really pushing the HTC Hero. I'm the proud owner of an ipod touch, which I love.

Like some have posted, I'm thinking that they will start using their own chip (like that A4 in the iPad) and that it brings better processing power and energy efficiency.

I think Apple doesnt give much of a damn about Flash now since HTML5 since to be developing up pretty well.

I have 4G internet right now through CLEAR, I am also a CLEAR rep here in Charlotte NC.
At the moment 4G coverage is spotty at best unless you live in the Urban settings of major cities, it is fast but even with my 4G card I can move out of 4G coverage which is only 3G.
Also there is a monopoly on the towers now via Sprint. AT&T has 'No' 4G right now as far as I know. CLEAR who is basically where the technology originates is owned by Google, Sprint, Time Warner and mostly owned by Clearnet, who is now CLEAR.
I don't see AT&T customers getting 4G anytime soon, unless AT&T is outfitting all of their towers as I write this thread.
Mind you I don't know.

Yeah, your right. Adobe is lazy anyway, according to Jobs.

i think they may add a better locking system so you cannot jailbreak that easy

I'm only going to talk about hardware seeing how multitasking and such are software related and can be added to any iDevice with an update.

I expect it to of course have more internal memory options (64 GB for sure at least)
Hopefully a flash for the camera, like the blackberry one at least those are awesome

While I don't imagine that this year will be the year of 4G coverage, talk of the iPhone 4G is probably more closely related to it being the 4th generation of hardware. 3G of course, is ancient, having been employed nearly a decade in parts of the world. But 4G is another matter. If it catches on in Asia and Europe, expect North America to straggle behind for years.

The problem is that the term 4G as in 4. generation would clearly confuse a lot of potencial customers for believing they would get a 4G cell connection. Apple has always made a big deal about refraining from cryptic/confusing names for their products. Unless the iPhone really sports a 4G cellular connection I don't think the name will be "iPhone 4G".

If I had to guess a name right now my bet would be "IPhone HD". "High Def." is such a great marketing term at the moment that I can see Apple easily jump the bandwagon.

Thinking of marketing terms... 3D is even more "in" rigth now. Imagine one of those new glassless 3D screens that was shown on this years CES on the new iPhone. Now link this together with multitasking where you can actually see the inactive task lying underneath the foreground app in 3D space. ... ... ... Okay maybe for the 6G or 7G. But a guy may dream...

I don't think they actually can since it is a hardware issue and not a software one. My hope is that they ould actually spend some time on improving protection of the software.

what I like to see in 4G is :

1. Flash games in app Store (can be paid via number of times played) if the browser does not work.
2. Better battery that can last me for longer time outside my house
3. Hulu movie app that can show me more tv programs other than iTunes
4. Video conferencing 3G face to face etc.

Yeah, your right. The hardware needs to be bumped up quite abit to make it a worthwhile upgrade.

The 4G iPhone will be my first and it'll be so nice not to have to carry around both my iPod Touch and my POC Nokia cell phone.

I agree that Adobe Flash will never be supported, Apple is hedging its bets on HTML5 making Flash obsolete.

I think the next gen iPhone will definitely have:
5 MP Camera
LED Flash
At least 64 GB storage

It will likely have:
new A4 chipset
better resolution screen

I suspect iPhone OS 4.0 will bring:
multitasking (for non apple standard apps)
folder storage system
wireless sync

I'd like to see a push button antenna to help when reception is poor.

According to this (http://mashable.com/2010/02/08/iphone-4g-leak/) rumor, the iPhone 4G would be taller. If it's true, 4G might likely have a few hardware upgrades in store (hope all those camera rumors are true!).

It seems as if it is only higher but the width is the same; it should still work with every dock.
