Just when you thought you’d wasted enough time slinging your way through all those Angry Birds games, Rovio has just released the next instalment in the popular franchise. Aptly named Angry Birds Friends, you play against your Facebook friends in this free to play game, and weekly tournaments will be held (the first being May 6th), where power-ups such as the King Sling, Super Seeds and Birdquake can be employed to your advantage.

EA has launched their 4th annual “Sweet Deals” iOS sale just ahead of Easter weekend, with nearly all their iPhone and iPad games on sale for $0.99. Big name titles like FIFA SOCCER 13, Need for Speed Most Wanted and Bejeweled HD can all be yours for a buck. Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite word game Bookworm and Chillingo’s Monster Truck Destruction (a subsidiary of EA) are currently free for a limited time. Boolagoon, a new studio founded earlier this year by three former Angry Birds developers from Rovio, have been cooking up a new iOS game - Noble Nutlings - set for release next thursday. No, it doesn’t involve catapults or birds, but rather some nutty squirrels and a rickety wooden cart. Billed as an physics based action-racing, you’re charged with piloting said squirrels through 36 levels of terrain (while trying to keep them safely onboard), with an emphasis on being able to customize your ride with fruits and other power-boosting objects.

Pocket, formerly known as Read it Later, and the app I rely on for saving all the articles I come across for offline/later reading, has announced that users across various platforms have saved to Pocket over 240 million times in 2012. The most-saved article this year was “Obama’s Way,” Michael Lewis’s 13,000-word presidential portrait for Vanity Fair, while the most-saved video in Pocket was (you guessed it) Gangnam Style. Some other stats include:

• There are currently 7.4 million users of Pocket
• Users save 10.4 items per second to Pocket
• 75% of active users have connected Pocket to two or more apps or devices
• The computer is the most popular platform for viewing content in Pocket (28%), followed by Android phones (25%), iPhone (21%), iPad (16%) and Android tablets (10%)

These codes can then be redeemed on iTunes for music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and of course apps and games. One year ago, on Oct 5th, 2011, Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs died at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer. Today, Apple pays tribute to the one-of-a-kind visionary with a heartfelt video eulogy on its homepage and a letter from Tim Cook.

Steve’s passing one year ago today was a sad and difficult time for all of us. I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.

One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It’s a wonderful tribute to Steve’s memory and everything he stood for.

While Google has no plans yet for a dedicated iOS 6 Maps app, iOS 6 users (particularly those with an iPhone 5) finally have access to Google Street View for when the need to look up local hotspots in a virtual 360 view arises. If you’ve ever used this amazing tool before, you know just how handy it can be when trying to locate a particular landmark. This is now possible on the latest OS thanks to an updated Google Maps web app, which can be accessed from mobile browsers like Safari or Chrome. Simply head over to maps.google.com on your iDevice, look up a point of interest in the search bar and ballon-shaped markers will be displayed on the map. Tap on one of them and an info bar will appear at the bottom, with options to call, get directions and a person icon for enabling Street View (if not available for the location, it’ll be greyed out). Conversely, you can simply tap on any POIs on the map to bring up said info bar.

With the release of the iPhone 5 just weeks away (more specifically, on Sept 21st as rumor would have it), no doubt one of the most anticipated new features of the phone is its 4″ screen. With the larger real estate, more apps and content will naturally be squeezed in. So in case you’ve been wondering what it’ll all look like, check out this this great video MacRumours had put together. With a screen resolution of 1136×640, this video demo shows how games, apps and movies might appear on the next gen iPhone. Of course, how iOS 6 will run on the taller iPhone is purely speculative at the moment, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this mock up turns out nearly identical to the real thing.
