Ladies and gents, it’s Touch ‘n Go time at good ol’ TMA! If the ever was a conspicuous touching game, it would be CataGugl, a … flinckingly fast-paced arcade game of Australian proportions that’ll have your burning circles in your iphone’s glass like a good Swedish craftsman to fling Gugl (hmmm?) as far as you can across your screen. It’s simple to play: just haze frantic ellipses into the glass until the counter hits GO!, then release, and pray. Actually, you will have to deflate the Gugl at certain points in order to send him faster and farther.

CataGugl Tayasui.com, CataGugl, 10.13MB – $0.99

Sounds simple, right? On the surface it is. Timing, however, is hard. I’ve never been good at arcade games, so take my results with a cup full of the Dead Sea. CataGugl is hard. Getting Gugl to hit the clouds and then inflate in order to fly further afield is a big chore. He bounces, inhales gas, and flips across the screen till his momentum is gone and it’s all I can do to achieve a personal best scoot of 18 000 metres (admittedly, a sad failure). My wife’s tiny fingers, on the other hand, have hurtled Gugl to 43 000 metres or so. She is my hero.

CataGugl is fun, make no mistake about it. It’s hard and that is good since it takes a long time to master. It isn’t however, a game that you will probably come back to very often unless you really really like cheap thrills. It’s a one-horse race that looks great, sounds great and let’s you compete, but at its current clip, it gets tired fast.

I can see why my wife was completely addicted to this puzzler. With its graffiti graphics and cute music, Slice It! may look like a quick little game, but it ain’t. It’s a cleverly disguised geometric puzzler that can tickle your brain for hours. Your mission? Divide shapes into equal parts in order to pass to the next level. Currently, there are 40 levels with more promised from Com2uS in the near future.

Slice It! Com2uS Inc., Slice It!, 14.30MB – $0.99

To get past one, you have to ‘slice’ a shape into equal parts. It starts out easily enough: you just draw a line on the screen to divide the shape. Nothing could be easier. There is a fantastic UNDO button, and thank God, you can multi-touch your shapes to get perfect alignment. But while manoeuvring the game screen and its interface is easy, cutting up shapes (especially as you progress into higher levels) is not. I’ve retried certain levels in the dozens of times. Here and there, little hints will help you, and if you accrue enough 5-star cuts, something good is bound to happen (wonder what that could be?) to help you along the way.

With pretty cute graphics, great gameplay, and three languages to throttle your brain with, Slice It! is a classic game at a great price. Honestly, the only nasty part about it is putting it down, even to write a short Touch’n Go review!

Tobias Thomsch may be an artist, but his business sense is keen. Cervo Media hooked up with Tobias in outing Magic Pictures HD, an entertainment app that gets you in touch with art and the artist. I’ve been playing around with Magic Pictures HD for a few days and have formed a very terse opinion of it as a unique, if quieting digital experience.

Magic Pictures HD - Living Pictures CERVO MEDIA, Magic Pictures HD – Living Pictures, 161.41MB – $1.99

Tobias’ and others’ work is displayed in panning photographic scenes replete with fitting sound effects, and floating OpenGL particle effects. These effects can be anything from snowflakes, to dust, to fog that can be manipulated by touch. In the background, fitting sound effects roll in and out. You CAN choose to turn off the particles and sound, but then, you’d be left with just an old OSX screensaver. And in case this becomes a habit, you can bring a clock into it.

So, is Magic Pictures HD worth 1.99$? Honestly, I think it is a great way to really utilise the multimedia capabilities of the iPad. Prop your iPad up on a shelf and you have an interactive picture display replete with sound. Plug the headphone output to a HiFi, and you have a truly ambient experience. All in all, a very way to enjoy photography.

It’s no shame on me to love spot-the-difference titles. And it’s no shame on me to say that Dreams HD is one of the best in the business of spotting the difference. What it’s got going for it: hand-drawn scenes, serene music, lots and lots of differences to spot, and enough levels, is charming to say the least. You don’t have to fuddle with strange FindIT interfaces or waste time zooming in and out endlessly. There are several difficulty settings that will help you enjoy the same levels again and again as indeed, you rarely will play the same level in exactly the same way.

Dreams HD Greyhound Games, Dreams HD, 9.88MB – $1.99

More after the gap:

What’s not so good is touch accuracy. Sometimes, being off by a millimetre will get you boned. You have a certain number of hints and what could be an embarrassing score to contend with. When Dreams HD complains that you touched a millimetre off of target and gives you a big fat Ghost-Busters’ sign, it can be downright frustrating. Thankfully, there is no time limit, no end to bad touches, and no real reason to play hastily. But when you do play hastily and hit it, you get bonuses that you can share with the world via OpenFeint, or with your mates on your very own iPad.

Dreams HD is a great title that’ll be keeping my attention for a long time.
