According to Digitimes’ sources, the iPad mini 2′s display will get a boost in resolution, which isn’t all that surprising considering how most, if not all, consider the current mini’s 1024×768 display to be its weakest link.

Apple’s next-generation iPad mini will focus mostly on enhancing the device’s display resolution, according to Taiwan-based backlighting industry sources.

The sources have yet to specify whether the device will use Apple’s Retina Display technology to enhanced resolution, but market observers said it is highly likely based on the development of past Apple products such as the iPhone and 9.7-inch iPad series.

If Apple does indeed give the next generation mini a higher resolution display, it stands to reason that it’ll have the same number of pixels as the Retina iPads (2,048 x 1,536). This way, developers won’t have to create a third format of Apps just for the 7.9″ iPad (the chances of Apple going this route is next to nil). While it may be safe to assume that Apple will release an iPad mini with a Retina display, there are those (like AnandTech) who believe that we won’t be seeing one anytime soon thanks to the increase in size and cost.

With the mini’s display using a 1024 x 768 resolution, this option would give it a 7.85-inch 2048 x 1536 panel. That would be the same resolution as the iPad 3/4, but in a much smaller display giving it a pixel density of 326 PPI (vs ~263 for the iPad 3/4). Apple could do this, but it would then need to make all of the same changes it made in going to the iPad with Retina Display, primarily the introduction of a larger battery and much larger SoC. The bigger battery is needed to drive the more powerful backlight, and the X-series of SoCs is needed to actually render the UI and games at such a high resolution. Both of these things would increase the size and cost of the mini, which would make it distinctly un-mini.

The other Digitimes rumour makes mention that the 9.7″ iPad 5 will also be lighter than the iPad 3/4.

Meanwhile, the sources also said that Apple will restructure the lighting of the next-generation 9.7-inch iPad from two LED light bars to one in order to decrease the device’s overall weight.

If true, and depending on how much lighter, this could also be rather significant. For anyone who’s held both the full sized iPad and mini side-by-side, it’s evident just how much heftier the bigger sibling is. I know that since I’ve used the mini on a daily basis, every time I pick up my iPad 3, I’ve thought to myself “wow, this sucker is heavy!”.

Now keep in mind that Digitimes has had its hits and misses with its reports, so take it with a grain of salt. Still, it’s exciting to think of the mini 2 with a Retina Display (that for me would be the perfect iPad for everyday use), and a lighter iPad 5.

The iPad Mini hasn’t even been announced yet, but that hasn’t stopped numerous manufacturers in China from selling cases based on (presumably) leaked specs. Now Zagg, makers of the ZAGGFolio Keyboard Case (TMA review) and  invisibleShields for mobile devices, has added a landing page on their website for the Apple iPad Mini Screen Protector. You can’t actually buy it yet, or even pre-order the Mini’s invisibleShield, but it shows that it’s coming soon and there’s an option to submit your email to be notified when it does become available. As it stands, the only option mentioned is the Screen Coverage for $24.99, though it maybe safe to assume that a full body protection coverage option will be offered at a later time.

If you’re not familiar with ZAGG’s highly popular line of invisibleShields for iPhones, iPod Touches, iPads and other gadgets, they’re ‘precision pre-cut’ and made from military grade material that prevents scrapes and scratches thanks to its ’self healing properties’. They carry a lifetime guarantee, so if they ever get scratched or damaged, ZAGG will replace them free of charge, for the life of your device (in this case, the iPad Mini).

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that Apple has already begun mass production of the iPad Mini in China. And according to Apple’s component suppliers in Asia, they have “received orders to make more than 10 million units” of the iPad Mini in the fourth quarter – double that of orders placed  for Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets.

It is expected that the 7.85″ iPad will be announced by Apple on Oct 17th, followed by its launch in November. Past rumours have pegged the smaller Apple tablet to start at $249-299 for an 8GB model.

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple’s ‘Asian component suppliers’ have begun mass production of the iPad Mini. Citing two sources, production of the upcoming iPad’s screens is said to have started last month, with both LG Display and AU Optronics being named as the manufacturers of the display. The same sources confirmed that the iPad Mini will feature a 7.85-inch LCD screen and that it will have a lower resolution than the iPad 3. It has been speculated in the past that the Mini will have a resolution 1024 x 768 pixels. Two days earlier, Japanese blog Macotakara claimed that production of the smaller tablet has already begun in Foxconn factories located in Brazil.

Last month, Chinese site Bolopad posted leaked images of the iPad Mini, showing its thinner bezelled design, aluminum backplate, rear-facing camera, the new 9-pin Lighting dock, and presumably a microphone hole located on its backside.

And it’s been rumoured on numerous occasions that the iPad Mini will start in the price range of $249-299 for an 8GB model, which if true, will be similarly priced against competing 7-inch tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Google Nexus 7. As for release dates, it is expected (though not confirmed at this point) that the iPad Mini will be announced by Apple on Oct 17th, followed by its launch next month.

Most would agree that the iPhone 5 was one of the worse kept secrets in the tech world. By the time it was unveiled in the media event on Sept. 12, those who followed the rumour mill closely weren’t all that surprised with the ’5′ thanks to factory design and spec leaks. With the way things are going, the iPad Mini isn’t too far behind – at least in the leaks department. The latest Mini leaked images to appear on the web comes from Chinese site BoLoPad.com, which posted several shots of Apple’s long rumoured 7.85″ tablet.

BoLoPad’s iPad Mini capture looks nearly identical to these that popped up several days ago on nowhereelse.fr, where there’re thinner bezels along its sides, an aluminum backplate, a rear-facing camera, the new 9-pin Lighting dock, and a mysterious hole located at the top of the smaller iPad’s backside (a good number of iPad Mini cases found on Alibaba also have this hole).

With regards to the screen, it’s hard to tell if it’s actually on, though chances are that it’s just a paper placeholder. For one, the screen looks kind of dull, like there’s no backlight being emanated. Then there are the icons – more specifically, the stock Google Maps and Youtube apps, which will no longer be included with iOS 6. Of course, it’s entirely possible that iOS 5 was installed in this demo/prototype, but without a hands-on video, it’s not possible to verify.

Speculation has the iPad Mini announcement set for October, with a possible release date in November. And an earlier rumour called for the Mini to feature an IGZO display and a launch price of $249-299 for an 8GB model.

It’s certainly interesting to see how the iPhone has evolved over the past several generations, not to mention that for the very first time, it has made the leap to a 4″ display (from 3.5 inches). Several weeks ago, iMore was the first source to claim that Apple would be holding a special event to unveil the iPhone 5 on September 12th. And now, Rene Ritchie is reporting that iPhone 5 pre-orders will begin on the same day as the Sept 12th announcement, with a US (and possibly other countries) release planned for September 21st, 2012. This info comes from sources who have provided them with accurate iPhone launch dates in the past. Unlike how the iPhone 4S pre-orders were made available 3 days after it was introduced, it would appear that the new iPhone will be following the new (2012) iPad’s launch strategy – where pre-orders went live shortly after the unveiling.

iMore has also learned that the second wave of iPhone 5 launches for international markets, will commence in the first week of October, with a possible date set for October 5th. While it is not known at this time which countries are part of the first wave of releases (save for the US), it’s possible that Apple will again include those from round one of the iPhone 4S launch: Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan. Obviously, if you live in any of these places, you’re probably keeping your fingers (and toes) crossed that the iPhone 5 will be ready to be pre-ordered and shipped come Sept 21st.

ETrade Supply has posted a detail look at an allegedly leaked iPhone 5 front glass panel, even providing some exact measurements of its dimensions. This comes about 2 months after they posted a video comparing the shell of the two-toned next gen iPhone with that of the 4S. In ETrade’s latest report, the iPhone 5 glass panel measured in at 4.065 inches diagonally, 90.25mm tall while maintaining its previous width of 51.60mm (vs 3.61″ x 76.65mm x 51.60mm on the iPhone 4S). It’s also 0.1mm thinner (perhaps thanks in part to the new in-cell technology) and the home button area has shrunk from 18mm to 15.4mm (the actual home button is also 0.3mm smaller).

From the ETrade Blog:

First of all let’s see the display screen. From the picture, we can see that the iPhone 5 glass lens is 90.25mm long, 51.60mm wide, while iPhone 4S is 76.65mm and 51.60mm. The display area enlarges from 3.61 inches to 4.065 inches. The LCD screen can be a little smaller, and that will be around 4 inches. What’s important, the resolution ratio of iPhone 5 glass lens is around 16:9, which will be a big change for iPhone.

[..]

From all the above personal analysis of iPhone 5 glass lens, we can conclude that Apple has adapted several details on the design of the glass lens. Whether this iPhone 5 glass lens will come out on the final Apple iPhone 5, let’s just wait until the release date. We will keep focusing on any news of iPhone 5. Anyone with any thoughts about iPhone 5 can share with us. We sincerely thank all of you for your attention and support to iPhone5parts.net. Hope you can enjoy this forum.

Here’s the video comparing the glass panels of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S. Note towards the end where keys were used to scratch both glass plates; it would appear that the upcoming iPhone will have significantly improved scratch resistance.

According to iMore's sources – ones they claim have proven accurate in the past – Apple is planning to unveil the iPhone 5 during a special event that'll be held on September 12th, with a release date to follow 9 days later, on September 21. The iPad mini, along with an all new iPod Nano (and likely iPod Touch) is set to be announced as well during the same event. From what iMore is hearing, the iPad Mini will be exactly the same as the 9.7″ big brother, only sized down to 7.x inches. A recent rumour had pegged the smaller iPad to feature a 7.85″ IGZO screen and a $250-299 price tag.

Meanwhile, iLounge has also published a report this morning providing a number of juicy tidbits regarding the release of the new iPhone and other iDevices. Here's what their “highly reliable source” is saying:

1) New iPhone - Apple is getting ready to ship the iPhone 5 sometime mid-September, with a launch date set for the third week of September. This would put it around the Sept 21 date that iMore had mentioned.

2) New iPhone 5 cases – Apple is planning to release not one, but two cases for the new iPhone. First is a bumper cases similar to the one for the iPhone 4/4S. The second is a completely re-designed case that iLounge's sources say will have a drastic impact on the accessory market (if released). A case with a built-in stand maybe a possibility.

3) New iPod Touch – Likely to be announced during the same upcoming Apple event and will also grow in screen size to 4 inches. If true, this will be the first time that a new design for both the iPhone and iPod Touch are revealed at the same time.

4) iPad Mini – The iPad Mini will not be shipping at the same time as the new iPhone, and it's possible that it'll have it's very own unveiling event. A launch date of November is a possibility. As for cases, Apple is said to be working on a smaller Smart Cover and Smart Case for the iPad mini.

5) 4th Generation iPad - Apple's plan for the iPad 4 involves minor body tweaks, all the while implementing the new small dock connector, a rear-side microphone, and improving on performance and heat issues that have accompanied the current gen iPad. The rear-side mic will be like the one found the iPhone 5 (located between the camera and flash) and should improve audio quality during rear video recordings.

If the iPhone 5 does indeed launch on Sept 21, that would put it at 11 months between an iPhone release. The wait between the iPhone 4 and 4S was an excruciatingly long 16 months. Thankfully, we'll only have to wait less than a month and a half before the rumoured Apple event drops on Sept 12th.

Japanese repair site iLab.cc have posted a handful of images of what apparently is a fully assembled iPhone 5. They’re among the most in-depth look yet of the next gen iPhone that have been circulating around the web over the past several weeks. Very similar to a previous leak of shots taken, these latest ones also show a two-toned design, a repositioned facetime camera (now sitting centered above earpiece) and earphone jack (bottom left of device), the long rumoured smaller dock connector and of course, the slightly larger (4 inch) screen. And as first reported by iLounge, iLab’s photos suggest a visibly slimmer body, which could directly be attributed to Apple supposedly using the all new in-cell technology for its display. More up close and personal images of the iPhone 5 after the gap.

One of the things we hear most about when it comes to the iPhone 5 is that it will sport a bigger 4″ Retina Display. The Wall Street Journal reported back in May that Apple had already begun to place orders for screens that are “at least” 4 inches diagonally for the next generation iPhone. And now the publication is reporting (along with a tweet) that the new 2012 iPhone will feature an all new touchscreen technology that will allow for the display to be even thinner. This is in line with a previous rumour that speculated the iPhone 5 will be 20% slimmer than the iPhone 4S (9.3mm vs 7.4mm).

Developed and being manufactured by Sharp, LG and Japan Display, the new screens use what is being called “in-cell” technology, where touch sensors are integrated directly into the LCD. Without the previously required touch sensor layer, the screen not only becomes thinner, but the quality of images and text displayed is also improved. According to the WSJ:

Apple next iPhone, currently being manufactured by Asian component makers, will use a new technology that makes the smartphone’s screen thinner, people familiar with the matter said, as the U.S. technology giant strives to improve technological features amid intensifying competition from Samsung Electronics Co. and other rivals.

The technology integrates touch sensors into the LCD, making it unnecessary to have a separate touch-screen layer. The absence of the layer, usually about half-a-millimeter thick, not only makes the whole screen thinner, but improves the quality of displayed images, said DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase.

WSJ also notes that the in-cell technology would simplify the supply chain and help cut costs for Apple, since touch panels and LCD panels will no longer have to be purchased from the various suppliers.  A thinner screen would allow Apple to either make a slimmer iPhone 5, or use the additional space for components like an LTE antenna or larger battery. As for the challenges faced with making these new screens, sources have told WSJ that they’re much harder to manufacture than conventional LCD screens, and the manufacturing process has so far been “challenging and time-consuming. Despite this, it is expected that the iPhone 5 will be released some time in the fall – perhaps around the end of September or early October, the month when the iPhone 4S first launch back in 2011.

Here’s a video by ETrade Supply that shows the supposed backplate of the iPhone 5. Notice the bottom headphone jack, smaller dock port and SIM card slot, which are features all noted in a previous leak.

The possible release of the iPad mini is one of those rumours that just won’t go away. The latest such rumblings come from Chinese tech site MyDrivers, where ‘anonymous sources’ claim that the 7.85 inch iPad mini will feature Sharp’s IGZO display and retail for under $300. As Wired points out, IGZO is a new and improved manufacturing process that makes displays “thinner, higher in contrast, and less power-hungry than current display technology”. It is worth noting that this technology was rumoured to replace the IPS screens on the new iPad, but this turned out to be false. The report also says that the smaller iPad will be as thin as the iPad 2, have a resolution of 330 pixels per inch and 8GB capacity, which will go for between $250-299. There is no mention of release dates, though a previous report from net portal NetEase claimed that the iPad mini will be launched in the 3rd quarter of 2012. With the recent release of the Google Nexus 7 (among a bevy of other 7″ android tablets), it’s not surprising that Apple reportedly have plans to introduce a more cost effective and portable iPad.

KGI analyst Mingchi Kuo, who AppleInsider say is known for having “sources deep within Apple’s chain”, is fully expecting that the iPhone 5 will move from its traditional 3.5″ 4:3 display to a 4″ 16:9 screen. More specifically, Kuo claims that Apple will be featuring a 4.08″ in-cell IPS panel screen with a resolution of 640 x 1136 and 500-nit brightness in its next generation iPhone. Previously, WJS had reported that the new iPhone’s screen will be “at least” 4 inches diagonally, and 9to5mac revealed that Apple had been testing out a taller display with 640 x 1136 pixels.

With regards to the rumour that the iPhone 5 will be thinner than the 4/4S, Kuo said Apple will likely keep the capacity of the battery at about 1,400mAh, which will be similar to that of the current generation iPhone.

And with various signs pointing to a taller iPhone 5 that will maintain its width from the iPhone 4/4S, Kuo believes it’s not only for ergonomic reasons, but also a financial one on the part of developers. AppleInsider writes:

Lengthening the screen without making it wider would serve more than just an ergonomic purpose. Kuo believes the unchanged width would save on app redevelopment costs because legacy apps could simply be letterboxed. The 16:9 resolution would provide more viewing space while typing in portrait mode and would more naturally display films in landscape mode. The analyst also claimed that a longer iPhone would bring the speaker close to users’ ears and the receiver closer to their mouths.

Kuo believes that an iPhone 5 with a larger screen will be a hit with consumers and expects 65-70 million units to be sold in 2012. The new iPhone is expected to be released  in the fall, with October being a strong possibility - which was when the iPhone 4S was launched in 2011.
