Thanks to the inspiration of such classics as Bejeweled there certainly isn’t a shortage of match 3 games on the App Store, but quality ones are an entirely different story.  For every Treasures Of Montezuma there are literally dozens that… well, just aren’t.  Thankfully 10 Tons rises above the ranks of “the others”, and with Azkend 2 kicks this particular series up a couple of notches [TMA's Azkend 1 review].

The first thing you’ll note is the music, which sounds more like the soundtrack of a blockbuster action movie than a puzzle game.  I bet I could sit and listen to the soundtrack for hours and not get bored.  Of course I’m not going to do that, since on top of the great music lays a pretty addictive game.

Azkend 2 uses the “select a bunch of adjoining pieces” match 3 methodology instead of the “swap two pieces to make a match” mechanic.  It’s become more frequently used but it’s still a nice change of pace.  In addition to the classic concept of changing underlying tiles from one color to another there are several variants on the theme of destroying something before it gets to a certain spot on the board.  These segments can be quite stressful, but ultimately give you a great sense of satisfaction.

The graphics are pretty sharp.  The background scenery is quite detailed and often changes as the story progresses.  The objects that you are matching are all well designed and change according to the location that you’re in.  There are even some slick special effects, especially when the Tesla coils start firing.

In a market where these games could quite likely be a dime a dozen, Azkend 2 certainly does enough to stick out.  I’ll bring you a full report when the game finally launches, but suffice it to say that you’re in for quite a journey with this match 3 sequel.

The Story

MYSTERY INFECTION STRIKES CITY!
Spider-Man is busy swinging toward the bridge back to Queens when he sees what appears at first glance to be a regular, NYC traffic jam… except this one happens to be caused by people abandoning their cars in the middle of the street and fleeing.
It might be the symbiote possessed horde advancing on them. Spidey dispatches the symbiotes and traces their source to City Hall, where he meets S.H.I.E.L.D. field researchers. The S.H.I.E.L.D (Supreme Headquarters International Espionage Law-enforcement Division) is an extra-government intelligence and security organization dedicated to protecting the nations and peoples of Earth from all threats. The lead researcher tells Spider-Man that scientists planted inside the Triskelion by the Roxxon Corporation attempted to combine Venom with OZ Serum, hoping to improve it. The resultant blast destroyed a portion of the Triskelion, allowing a number of super-villains to escape this morning… and also dispersed some of the Oz-Venom synthesis, which began possessing/infecting people throughout the city.

The researchers have been collecting samples all morning in hopes of generating a rapid-acting antidote, but S.H.I.E.L.D. is overwhelmed with another crisis elsewhere and stretched thin. They’ve detected a major infestation inside City Hall… but aren’t equipped to defend themselves from a group that size. Can Spidey get inside and procure a sample?

Preview of Rimelands: Hammer of Thor – Rogue is going steampunk! http://www.touchmyapps.com/2010/08/06/preview-rimelands-hammer-of-thor/ http://www.touchmyapps.com/2010/08/06/preview-rimelands-hammer-of-thor/#comments Fri, 06 Aug 2010 13:02:10 +0000 http://www.touchmyapps.com/?p=37209 I got interested in Rimelands back in early 2010 when I came across the first batch of screenshots and some basic information on the game. I got interested in Rimelands back in early 2010 when I came across the first batch of screenshots and some basic information on the game. It got me so interested that I contacted Arto and Peter from Dicework Games for an exclusive interview about their project. And now, barely half-a-year later, Rimelands is in its final stages of beta-testing and scheduled to be submitted to Apple for review in a couple of weeks. What’s even better – I can give you a sneak peek of what’s in store!

Even though the game is still in beta the background story is already almost completely in place. The general population of Earth screwed up and ushered in a new ice-age. People were forced to retreat into deep vaults to survive. But then steam was discovered – and I’m not talking about the one from boiling water. This steam emanated from the bowels of the planet itself and had unique properties, allowing mankind to reach out and start reclaiming the ice-covered surface. But they were greeted with the new masters of the planet – the Fae-folk, magical creatures that have amazing powers. After a long and bloody war a peace treaty was signed, albeit a very unstable one. A new force has found its way into the world and now the survival of both races depends on the actions of a young treasure hunter.

Rimelands is an RPG in the traditions of Rogue. The game is completely turn-based, though out of combat you’ll rarely notice it. Each turn every unit can make one action, be it a use of a skill, attack or move a square. An interesting feature is the combat system itself. When an attack is made or an offensive skill is used both parties roll dice according to their stats. The die result may be a hit, a double-hit, a block or a miss. Then the rolls are tallied and compared and depending on the amount of hits of the attacker and the block dice of the defender it is decided whether a hit is scored.

But what is an RPG without character customization. And here Rimelands has enough to sacrifice even the most die-hard gamer. On a level-up you can choose what path you want to upgrade. There are 3 possible ones – barbarian, assassin and shaman – specializing in melee, ranged or magic attacks respectively. On an upgrade you may receive a skill point, an additional die or a boost to one of the characteristics. The skill trees provide ample opportunity for various styles of play with a mix of active and passive skills for all professions, as well as more offensive or defensive talents.

Another pillar of RPGness is, of course, the inventory. Chests are scattered all over the dungeons with loot to make any munchkin’s mouth water. The items themselves aren’t random, but the assortment covers both pure and hybrid builds with artifacts from the common white stuff to the extremely rare and powerful purple equipment. These items come in four categories with only one of each possible to have equipped at every single moment – melee weapon (also covers magic staffs), ranged, armour and accessory.

On the visual side Rimelands is simply gorgeous. Despite being built on the infamous Unity engine the graphics quality rivals that of Dungeon Hunter. The performance is a bit flaky on the iPhone 3G on some levels, but you can always turn off the high-end weather and lighting effects to provide for comfortable play. Lastly – Rimelands is one of the rare games, targeted for high replayability with about two thirds of the dungeons being randomly generated on each play and varied skills that easily make it worth going through at least 3 times to try out the different builds and aspects.

There are still a few weeks left for the developers to put in some additional polish on the already amazing title. But I can tell you what we have shaping up here will definitely give even the titles from the big developers a run for their money. Rimelands throws in the pot an excellent storyline and setting, great graphics, a deep and varied RPG system and superb replayability to serve the iDevice gamers one of the best RPG games on the platform.

With this I declare Rimelands: Hammer of Thor officially pretouched!

A little over a year ago, while the App Store was void of even a single decent quality adventure game, a small independent developer called Agharta Studio released 1112 episode 01– the first adventure game to be exclusively developed from the ground up for the iPhone. The project came to fruition through the hard work of a small team led by Alexandre Leboucher and got high praise from critics all across the board (including an honorable mention in our The App Store’s Best Adventure). It was stylish, beautifully drawn and had an original storyline and puzzles to back it all up.

Despite the original promise of a sequel in about 4 month’s time, the team decided to take a little detour to make the excellent Rogue Planet, which messed up the schedule somewhat. Fastforward to April 20, 2010 – Alexandre has just informed me that the long awaited sequel has finally been submitted to Apple and graciously allowed me to take a full hands-on go with 1112 Episode 02. And here’s how it looks.

First of all – I am NOT going to go into every nook and cranny – that I will do in the full review as soon as 1112 Episode 2 is officially out on the AppStore. I am going to give you a few teasers and highlights, especially compared to the first episode.

Speaking of which – there is no need to actually play  1112 episode 01 to get full enjoyment out of the sequel. All of the necessary backstory about the previous events is told in a handy intro sequence and you find yourself right where you left off before – in an unknown hotel room somewhere in New York. You can’t remember how you got here, or where exactly HERE is. First things on the TO-DO list – find out what happened and finally get in touch with Goodman. The gameplay in this part is a bit more dialogue based than in the first part and to spice it all up, Agharta Studio added several minigame-like puzzles. Yes, be prepared for a little Sudoku and some wire-twisting.

The storyline in Episode 2 advances quite considerably, though by the end of it you’ll still have no idea what’s going on.  By the way, I’m being told that 6 episodes total have been laid out, which promises a consistency rarely found in sequels and the like. An interesting vibe I got when playing 1112 Episode 02 was one akin to watching the first season of LOST, arguably the best TV show of all time. The game sucks you in and constantly keeps you off balance with the events unfolding, and while it leaves you with more questions than answers, it feels natural and makes you hungry for more.

On the technical side the game is simply a massive improvement over Episode 1. The engine has been rewritten completely from scratch (which was the other fact responsible for the delay) and renders the beautiful hand-drawn scenes with music and sfx flawlessly even on the older iPhone 3G.

The interface also received a complete overhaul. Gone are the action buttons on the right – instead only a single small icon is present. With a tap and drag you can bring it down to reveal the same 3D backed inventory where you can take each and every item and spin it around to examine from all angles. One thing that got cut in the transition was the map – but I never thought it useful anyway. In the game scene, not only can you pan using a finger and zoom-in out using the pinch gesture, but scan around the area with a magnifying-glass-cursor that makes finding the active spots a cinch. And finally – you can do all of that at the same time (full multi-touch support – finally!).

What more is there to say?  1112 Episode 02 is a masterpiece – and once it is out it will definitely be the crown jewel of the 1st Person Adventure games on our App Store’s Best list. On my personal list, it is one of the best adventure games I ever played and I can’t wait for Episode 03 :) Coming Summer 2010 they say…

Update: Sketch Nation Shooter is now live on the App Store

To date I’ve only done a few reviews of what I would consider “old school” 2D scrolling shooters such as Underground.  However the ones I have reviewed and/or own have been great recreations of a classic style of game play that proves the point that when it comes down to it, content is what really matters.  In an age of 3D, 4D, l-m-n-o-p-d-…, it’s nice to see simple succeed.  Recently I was able to get my hands on a beta copy of an upcoming app store game Sketch Nation Shooter (SNS) by developer Engineous Games.  Sketch Nation Shooter is a clever fusion of art and gaming and some creative social networking.  Read on to see what I thought of this innovative title. Feel free to discuss this (p)review of Sketch Nation Shooter in our forums.

The design of SNS is just great; it is both amusing and effective. Your main screen/background as you go through pages is a piece of lined paper and all your text, buttons and links all look like they were hand written/drawn. Even the news feed section on the main page looks like a post-it note. With a name like Sketch Nation, the design just fits in perfectly and is a great hint at what’s to come.

Now when it comes to game play there isn’t much to tell.  If you are a fan of scrolling shooters then you’re already familiar with the style.  Basically you are constantly moving forward and shooting.  Your goal is to destroy the enemies that are coming at you, as well as avoid any obstacles that may get in your way. It is a very simple and straightforward style of play that although not difficult, can definitely get addictive.

The magic really happens before you even play. One of the main features of Sketch Nation Shooter is the ability to basically design your own scrolling shooter. You can choose to design a simple version or go advanced and design the complete game. To do this you just take some paper and draw up your main player, some enemies (if you’ve chosen advanced you can also add a boss character, level sections and even an intro image/comic/whatever).  Once you have all pieces drawn out take clear pictures of each with your phone.  Then it’s just a matter of compiling and saving your level.

There are a lot more customization options available but this preview would be about twice as long if I went in to each one.  The main thing you should know is that you basically can draw/import anything you want and edit/alter how it acts.  It really is the first time (that I can recall) you’ve had the ability to create your own game, without the hours and headaches of learning how to code it from the ground up.  The only issue I had with the whole process is that the game wouldn’t always capture my images. I sometimes had to go over lines multiple times to make it dark enough to render.

The other really big feature of the game is it’s built-in social network system. Your main screen has a news feed that will keep you updated on the game and what your friends are up too. You’ll also be able to both upload AND download custom games from their built in Sketch Nation Network. So not only do you have a game, that allows you to design a game, you also have the ability to download other people’s versions of the game. So the amount of actual games you’ll end up with just within this one app is almost limitless.

Just think, using your artistic side you can now create a game that truly speaks to you.  For our family men and women out there, imagine all those drawings that your son or daughter has given to you over the years.  Now imagine them in a game not only being played by you, but by thousands of people around the world. Amazing.  I have to say, I really enjoyed Sketch Nation Shooter.  I had a feeling I would like it when I first got my hands on it and was glad that it didn’t disappoint.  I would definitely recommend this game to other scrolling shooter fans.

Tetraedge, the company behind some of the best adventure games on the iDevice, have given me the unique opportunity to test out their upcoming game – The Egyptian Prophecy – a port of the PC title by Kheops Studio: Egypt 3: The Egyptian Prophecy. And being the sneaky guy that I am I also took the opportunity to take a video of the gameplay.

The Egyptian Prophecy is a classic first-person adventure set in ancient Egypt. The pharaoh is charged by the god Amun-Ra to build an obelisk in the name of the god to save his life. Unfortunately the construction works are plagued by mishaps and accidents. The story follows the adventures of Maya, who is charged by the pharaoh himself to investigate the delays.

The gameplay in Egyptian Prophecy is the classic rendition of first-person adventure games. You explore the surrounding areas, talk to people, solve puzzles, find items and then find a place to use them – you know, the usual! While the inventory management has been somewhat simplified by the absence of item combining, Egyptian Prophecy is among the few adventure games that offers the usage of special powers. You start with clairvoyance and obtain various new skills throughout the game. Timely and clever usage of the powers are essential to progress in the game and tie in logically with the puzzles.

Egyptian Prophecy uses the same 360 degree engine as the previous games by Tetraedge which accounts for the amazing graphics quality and excellent performance even on the older phones. The in-game interface is similar to earlier releases, though the inventory one has been built from scratch and looks simply gorgeous.

The game will be released in 3 episodes much like the recent Dracula: The Path Of The Dragon – Part 1 and may also be priced at $0.99 a piece. I would estimate the gameplay at about 2-3 hours per episode which would make for a fair overall time of 6-9 hours for the full game. The development is in its final stages and all episodes will probably either be released at the same time or at least in close succession since they are all fully playable and almost without bugs already. The only point not yet defined is the publisher, who may have a say in the final release dates.

The Egyptian Prophecy is an excellent title for all adventure fans to sink their teeth in to. It offers the unique opportunity of diving into the charm of ancient Egypt wrapped in a visually beautiful package and a user-friendly interface.

With this I officially declare The Egyptian Prophecy preTouched!

Some time ago I was blessed with an invitation to a closed beta-test of a new RPG from Com2US – creators of  arguably the best Action/RPG on the iDevice at the moment – Inotia 2: A Wanderer of Luone (TMA Review – Kiss It). They have undertaken an ambitious task of claiming the crown of side scrolling Beat-em-up RPGs currently held by HYBRID: Eternal Whisper (TMA Review – Kiss it). And today I’m going to give you a preview of what will be in store once Caligo Chaser is released – with video nonetheless!

Well, Caligo Chaser is out now! Check it out at the App Store:

Caligo Chaser Com2uS Inc., Caligo Chaser – $2.99

The story in Caligo Chaser revolves around Chic – a young aspiring Private Knight – auspiciously shortened to PK in many conversations. As some of you may know, PK is a common abbreviation for “Player Killer” in MMORPG games – the people who run around often terrorizing newbies and such. Anyway, back to business. Having just arrived in the land of Emporioum, he’s immediately met by the president who reminds him of the 100,000 leones he’s owed. Now Chic has no choice but to join the PK to earn wealth and glory in an attempt to pay back the loan. And maybe get a girl along the way as well.

Gameplay wise Caligo Chaser is a classic side-scrolling beat-em-up. Each level is split into several stages and the only way to progress is to kill everyone on each stage. The game features the classic simple strikes and dashes, along with charge strikes and skills. A nice touch is that you’re not only scored on the completion of each level, but are also awarded extra loot depending on how well you did (which gives an extra incentive to make a perfect sweep). Levels are punctuated by towns and neutral areas where you can talk to people, buy items and even do some tinkering with equipment – like enchanting pieces off it and even combining elements to get completely new gear.

One of the more interesting features of Caligo Chaser is character development. On each level-up you will get 5 stat points to distribute. All of the effects are immediately shown in a detailed stat screen, so it’s easy to understand and tailor to your own preferences. The skills are not upgraded using stat points though. Rather they are equipped via special passive and active skill stones. The most interesting innovation is that you can actually enchant and upgrade the skill stones as you can with any other piece of equipment, instead of waiting for the proverbial power up.

The graphics in Caligo Chaser follow the Japanimation traditions and include some of the most detailed art I’ve seen on the iDevice in such a genre. The character’s appearances changes depending on the equipment and even the hair moves. The music is also very good, offering the right mood for the moment.

The biggest flaw of Caligo Chaser at the time of the beta-test, one that is likely to have been addressed by the developers already, is the interface. The game features a mix of touch-based and d-pad controlled menus, huddled in the center of screen. The buttons and text are too small to press or read comfortably. The battle interface  on the other hand is better, though the D-Pad is not as responsive as I would’ve liked. But again, it was only a beta and will probably have been fixed by the time of its release.

From what I’ve seen  Caligo Chaser is an excellent game and a real contender to take the beat-em-up RPG crown away from Hybrid. My only concern at the moment is the interface, but hopefully Com2US will have listened to the feedback provided at the beta-testing and made any necessary tweaks for that extra polish. The other issue that may affect initial sales is the seemingly coinciding release of Zenonia 2 – one of the most anticipated games of 2010. Who will rule the genre in a month? We’ll just have to see!

With this I officially declare Caligo Chaser preTouched!

Back in the day when eat or be eaten ruled our insular universe, things were easy. Now, flesh and blood contend with the following: work or starve, bib or drool, stripes or polka dots – it ain’t easy. Fox VS Duck, a Zen-like game, aims to bring that simplicity back to gamers’ lives. Fox VS Duck comes from the same brilliant minds who brought us MiniSquadron. MrFungFung have this to say about their upcoming game:

It’s all about addictive, hypnotic gameplay in a stunningly elegant zen environment. We invite you to take part in Fox Vs Duck, a quirky and poetic game of Prey and Predator, of Life and Death.

TMA has reviewed Fox Vs Duck which is out now:

Fox Vs Duck MrFungFung, Fox Vs Duck – $0.99

More after the gap:

But I prefer this admonition from MrFungFung the best: “PLAY, FOR DUCK’S SAKE.”

Fox Vs Duck is scheduled for release at the App Store in March and is likely to turn the heads of more than one gamer, TMA certainly included.

A vast section of the App Store is dedicated to personal health: apps for malignant mole detection, for the monitoring of body weight fit, etc.; each fitting snugly alongside hundreds of their brethren. And in that group is the first aid group which includes demonstrations, videos, and how-to’s. Only one of that number, however, lets you administer CPR to your iDevice. PocketCPR either coaches or recuses your CPR efforts by detecting your methods with the inbuilt-accelerometer and some lovely programming.

If you get strange looks while pile-driving your iPhone, say that you are practicing medicine: when an emergency calls, you alone may be fit enough to lend a helping hand. NOTE: PocketCPR hasn’t been ratified by the U.S. FDA.

App Description and screenshots after the gap.

PocketCPR for iPhone™ provides REAL-TIME feedback and instructions on CPR that empowers ANYONE to learn and practice CPR, so that they can be READY when seconds really count!!! The technology is the same as that used in PocketCPR, an FDA-cleared device, for actual rescue from sudden cardiac arrest.

Pocket CPR for iPhone is a must-have app for anyone who wants to learn how to perform CPR with accuracy. The PocketCPR can be used in CPR training programs and for individual practice at home or at work. It is a great tool for families to learn CPR in order to be prepared if a loved one needs their help.

PocketCPR for iPhone:

  • Actively utilizes the accelerometer hardware in the iPhone for real-time coaching and actual feedback on CPR while you are learning and practicing.
  • Measures the actual rate and depth of your compressions and lets you know if you need to push faster or slower, and whether you should push harder or softer.

Other CPR prompting devices can provide instructions on CPR or encourage you on the steps and pace of CPR, but ONLY PocketCPR for iPhone can:

  1. Give instructions
  2. Prompt on the steps for proper CPR
  3. AND give you REAL-TIME feedback on the chest compressions you deliver.

PocketCPR for iPhone will remind you to Call for Help, to provide ventilations according to guidelines (optional), and to perform CPR at the correct rate and depth. The device algorithms are in complete compliance with American Heart Assocation and International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) guidelines.

Pocket CPR for iPhone features include:

  • Clear visual and audio step-by-step instructions on CPR performance, including initial steps for the Chain of Survival
  • Option to go straight to chest compressions for those who are familiar with the initial Chain of Survival steps
  • Precise metronome to pace chest compressions
  • Accurate ability to detect rate of actual compressions and to state visually and audibly whether to push faster or to push slower.
  • Industry-proven technology to detect the depth of chest compressions.
  • Audio and visual prompts to push harder or to push softer.
  • Prompts to remind the user to provide ventilations after the detection of 30 chest compressions.
  • Feature to detect when chest compressions have stopped and to prompt user to START CPR.
  • Complete Instructions for Use

NOTE: The Pocket CPR for iPhone is currently for training and practice purposes only. The application is not yet cleared by the U.S. FDA for use in an actual rescue.
