I’m certainly as much a fan of zombie games as the next guy, but there are other undead specimens that are just as cool and often tend to go virtually unnoticed.  The upcoming game The Frankenstein Wars takes the notion that someone has managed to harness the secrets of Dr. Frankenstein and create an army of piecemeal soldiers that feel no pain and can definitely wreak havoc.  You actually control the fate of two brothers, and it’s up to you whether they become allies to stop the impending invasion or if they choose to be mortal enemies as one vies for ultimate power.

frankenstein-wars-concepts

While story will certainly be key to this adventure, the game goes well beyond the scope of normal interactive gamebooks.  You’ll explore interactive maps, follow branching, non-linear storylines, and eventually decide the fate of two different characters.  Your goals will change as the story progresses, and your theoretical victory will be affected by your pace – the longer you take to reach the enemy, the stronger they will be.  Weather can actually direct the story, and you’ll even get to command whole battalions of troops.  The scope of the game sounds much grander than anything we’ve experienced previously in a gamebook adventure, and I for one am pretty excited about it.

It appears that The Frankenstein Wars is slated to ship in December on both iOS and Android platforms, and there is currently a Kickstarter campaign so the developers can gather a few additional funds to tidy things up a bit.  Head on over and check it out.

It sounds kind of ominous saying that Dark Future is coming soon, but don’t sweat it – I really am just talking about a game here.  The electronic gaming community seems to be exploding with Games Workshop content lately, and while I’ll be the first to admit I know little about the company or their properties I’m aware that they’ve been around for a long time and their stuff seems to be quite popular.  This particular IP takes place in the post apocalyptic America of 2023, which isn’t too far around the corner from us now.

news-dark-future-2

You run an agency that helps clean up the wasteland between Patrolled Zones, making sure the NoGos don’t try to go where they shouldn’t go.  You’ll have to manage both cars and drivers, making sure that jobs get handled and drivers have everything they need to do their tasks.  The press release describes this as a “turn based strategy game, played out in simultaneous real-time action”.  I assume that means everyone will “move” and then you’ll get to see the results of your choices.  However it ultimately works out, if the game itself looks half as good as the teaser video, this is literally going to be one wild ride.

I’ve seen nothing yet to indicate what platform(s) this bad boy will arrive on, but I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that it at least lands on iOS devices.  The developer, Auroch Digital, has already teamed up with Games Workshop to produce two outings in the Chainsaw Warrior universe for iOS, so it seems logical that Apple’s mobile platform would be one target for Dark Future: Blood Red States as well.

Fancy yourself a game developer, but don’t know where to start?  Looking for development tools with little monetary overhead that support multiple mobile platforms?  Do you like match 3 / RPG style games?  Gregory Ellis might just have the solution for you… if you’re willing to help give his project a bit of a Kickstart!  The name of the game is Swipe To Kill, and the goal behind the project is for the developer to provide a complete tutorial along with fully documented source code so you can develop your own game of this style in no time flat.  Since the format of choice is HTML5, CSS and JavaScript there’s nothing to buy unless you want a special editor that supports the syntax for these common web development paradigms, and you could probably even find a few of those for free as well.  To find out what you can do to support this developer’s aspirations check out the Kickstarter page here: Swipe to Kill: HTML5 Mobile Game & Development Tutorial.

Do you have children that are interested in learning how to program?  Maybe you just feel like your son or daughter has potential and want to trick them into it?  Robot School. Learn to Code might just be the tool for the job.  Aimed at children 7 and older, the software is presented as a puzzle game where you have to help a robot make its way back home, but in order to do so you’ll have to program it to get around all kinds of sticky situations.  According to the developer Next is Great, here are the basic selling points:

  • The app is suitable for children aged 7 and above
  • It offers a child-friendly way to learn procedures, loops and conditional instructions, while making programming fun and accessible, regardless of prior experience
  • The app has 45 levels for children to work through, unlocking new powers and achievements as they go
  • The code created in the app can be then previewed in Apple’s Swift programming language and shared on Facebook
  • PSST … it is a great logic game for grown ups too!

If you’d like to see the game in action, here’s a Youtube video: Robot School is in session

And for the first three to grab them, the developers were kind enough to offer some promo codes:
MJ4M4TPKWY9W
7M46WEMEMN7K
WM9KLRNFTJ73

If you happen to take one please drop the developer a note to say thanks, or at least consider rating it on the App Store.  And if the codes have already expired I apologize, because it took me a little while to get this post up.

Looking for some new games to add to your iOS collection this holiday season?  If you’re into casual gaming, Halfbrick is the place to be.  From the international sensation Fruit Ninja to one of the first “do something besides run” infinite runners Monster Dash, these guys have a wide assortment of options for you to choose from, and they’ve decided to go crazy and give them all away for this festive occasion.  This is quite the one-two punch given that they’ve recently updated several of their titles with lots of fancy new features.  I could tell you more, but the best way for you to experience the fun is to simply head on over to the App Store and check out the choices yourself.

One of the latest features of the App Store is the ability for developers to bundle up their software titles and offer that bundle at a reduced price.  What’s really nice for the consumer is that if you own some of the games in the bundle already you can purchase the rest for a pro-rated lower cost so you still save some money.  Many game developers are already jumping on this bandwagon, so I thought I’d point out a couple of recent one that I thought were interesting.

tilt-to-live-bundle

Tilt To Live Tilty-Tilt Boom Boom Bundle

Besides being one of the best names for a bundle so far, this bundle contains some of the best twitch action, dodge everything games you’ll find on the App Store.  Start with the original Tilt To Live, my favorite game in the genre at the time.  You can read all about my adventures with this gem here: Tilt To Live review.  Once you think you’ve mastered all there is to tilting and destroying you’ll want to check out Tilt To Live 2: Redonkulous, the game that managed to kick the insanity of the original up a notch or two.  I just happen to have a review of that one as well, just in case you’re inclined: Tilt To Live 2: Redonkulous review.  Finally, you can see what the first official spin-off feels like in Tilt To Live: Gauntlet’s Revenge.  This game turns the crazy, arena based action into an obstacle course instead, proving that the Tilt To Live franchise isn’t a one trick pony.  This is one action bundle you can’t go wrong with.

Tilt to Live Tilty-Tilt Boom Boom Bundle One Man Left, Tilt to Live Tilty-Tilt Boom Boom Bundle – $4.99

cubus-games-bundle

Cubus Games Adventures

There’s actually a bit more to the title on this one, but I think you’ll get the drift once I start laying out the games contained within.  First up is The Sinister Fairground, an interactive horror gamebook that’s sure to make you think twice before visiting your local carnival next time.  An intricate, detailed storyline is laced with combat and mind bending puzzles to keep you on your toes.  If you’re more of a sci-fi nut you’ll want to try Heavy Metal Thunder.  A deep science fiction plot will suck you in and a slick combat system will keep you entertained.  It’ll also prepare you for the sequel which is due out some time in the near future.  Finally you have Necklace of Skulls, a story steeped in Mayan culture.  Besides the unique background for the tale, an innovative combat system is sure to intrigue even the most seasoned gamebook player.

Cubus Games Adventures: get into the darkest, dangerous stories – Gamebook Bundle Cubus Games, Cubus Games Adventures: get into the darkest, dangerous stories – Gamebook Bundle – $7.99

I believe both of these bundles have a limited shelf life, so grab them while you can.

In a virtual App Store that sees thousands of new game releases a month, how is a company supposed to get noticed?  Some feel they need to turn to publishers like Chillingo or BulkyPix, while others put their trust in PR firms.  Apparently Nekki believes in the power of its own fan base.  Shadow Fight 2 is the mobile sequel to their hit Facebook martial arts game, and so far it has seen 35 million downloads between iOS and Android devices.  Nekki has amassed an amazing 160 million downloads amongst all of their games, which is quite impressive given that they has spent very little on advertising up to this point.  Still, as someone who has more than 20,000 titles in his collection can attest to, just because someone downloads a game doesn’t mean they are playing it.  However, Shadow Fight 2 average 1.5 million users per day, so I think they have the “actually playing” fan base nailed down pretty well.  For a more detailed look at this milestone you can take a look at Nekki’s complete press release here:

Shadow Fight 2 for iOS and Android Surpasses 35 Million Downloads

In the mean time, I thought I’d add an itsy bitsy notch to their formidable digital belt and take the game for a spin myself.  I’m playing on an iPad 2 running iOS 8.0.1 (I know, my bad), and the game seems to handle itself pretty well.  I’ve never been big on fighting games, and my skill is even less credible when you take away a physical joystick, but I’m managing to do okay so far.  There seems to be plenty of options for attack with an 8 way virtual joypad as well as kick and punch buttons, assuming you can actually pull of the combos that you learn along the way.  Game modes include a comprehensive story option, tournament mode to help you level up and survival mode which gives you the chance to earn extra coins.  As you level up you’ll unlock new perks, weapons and armor, all of which make it easier for you to advance in the different areas of the game.  The shadowy renderings combined with some really fluid animation make this pretty incredible to watch, and the music and sound effects transport you to the days of fun Bruce Lee flicks.  From my admittedly limited fighting game experience on the iPad, I’d say Shadow Fight 2 is a pretty decent contender.

The Overkill series from Craneballs has always been among my favorites as far as gallery style shooters go. I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical at first when I saw that they were taking the series to a truly 3D third person perspective. The more I watch the video, however, the more excited I get about seeing this game released. If you’re curious, and you should be, you can check out the video yourself here: Overkill 3 Teaser. I’ve also listed a few point of note about the game below.

  • Change to TPS to showcase the character and armor/gun upgrades directly in the game
  • Boss battles – against drones, robots, vehicles
  • Machine gun nest missions for pure “letting of steam”
  • Night missions – they look great thanks to Unity with its lighting possibilites
  • Plenty of guns and sophisticated gun upgrading (not entirely unexpected from an Overkill title)
  • Release date Fall 2014
  • iOS and Android
  • Free to play

In the mean time, you can check out previous installments of the franchise to get a small taste of what you’re in for.

Think you’ve got what it takes to handle the pressure cooker environment of a football manager?

Well you’re in luck, as Actoz Soft have just released One For Eleven, a Free-to-Play football management game for iOS and Android devices. Giving you the chance to manage some of the biggest names in the sport, you pick the tactics, formation, and line-ups for matches – and then have to watch your assembled squad fares against a range of opposition. Nail biting is optional. There are two ways to watch matches too, with Live Broadcast mode allowing you to get a top-down view of the field and all the players on it. Text Broadcast mode is the other less flashy method, updating you on matches through text alone.

So if you want to see if you’ve got what it takes in the managerial hotseat you can get One For Eleven from the App Store or Google Play for free, right now.

Don’t forget to visit the One For Eleven website, or the game’s Facebook page for more details though.
