Infuse , my favorite video player on iOS, has been updated with some highly anticipated features, including AirPlay, TV out (with HDMI/VGA adapter), WiFi file transfers and more. Besides being able to play most popular video formats – thus saving you the time of first converting into MP4 format – and its beautiful interface, Infuse lets users easily download subtitles right from within the app and also integrates trakt.tv (keep track of all the movies and shows you’ve watched with a free account). Personally I’ve been waiting for AirPlay support since the app released and thankfully, streaming to an Apple TV works flawlessly from what I’ve seen so far. There have been no lags or video/audio quality issues with the dozen or so files I’ve tested. The only downer is that subtitles are disabled once AirPlay is enabled. Fear not though, as FireCore has just mentioned to me that this is something they’re working on and hoping to implement in the next update in 2-3 weeks.

Infuse is a free update for existing users and costs $4.99 on the App Store. More info after the gap.

Write for Dropbox, an intuitive writing app with a slick interface, is now free for the iPhone after the release of its iPad version. Using Dropbox to sync all your work, the app opens to a blank note so you can quickly jot down your ideas or notes quickly. You’ll also find an extra row of convenient keys above the keyboard that provides shortcuts to popular Markdown syntax. And aside from the host of sharing options available, one of my favorite little features is the cursor trackpad that lets you easily move the cursor around the screen and select desired text.

Device Sharing: Use either your iPhone or iPad as a keyboard

Coinciding with the release of the iPad Write app ($1.99), Write for iPhone was updated with a unique new feature called Device Sharing, which has two functions: Remote Keyboard and Remote Clipboard. The former is fairly self explanatory in that you can now use either your iPhone or iPad as an external keyboard to type while the other device handles the main writingworkflow.

With Remote Keyboard, you’re able to clip text from Safari (or any other source) from, say your iPhone, and this will automatically be available for pasting on your iPad. I’ve tried this function out several times and it works really well, not to mention it saves time as I don’t have to constantly close up Write on one device while I look up something on the web. Do note that for Device Sharing to work, you’ll need to be connected to the same Wifi network.

Essentially now that the iPhone version is free for the next few days, you can grab both versions for the price of one (both $1.99). Write for Dropbox is one of the best writing apps for iOS and this is one awesome freebie you don’t want to miss. If you do any form of notetaking or even more serious writing on the go, I highly recommend that you download Write for the iPhone today.

Google Now has been available to Android phones for several months now, and it has finally arrived for the iPhone and iPad. Described as ”the right information at just the right time”, Google Now is the latest feature found within the Google Search app. Once you sign into your Gmail account, “Cards” will appear at the bottom that provide helpful info like local weather, currency conversion when travel abroad, traffic conditions to your next likely destination, sports scores, flight status and much more.

Simply swipe said cards left or right if you don’t need them. According to Google, the more you use it and over time, prediction will improve and more cards will appear. To help pull in relevant info, Google Now relies on Location Services, but because the app doesn’t use the device’s GPS – rather it receives “passive” updates from nearby cell towers and WIFI hot spots – the feature shouldn’t be a battery hog.

With the implementation of Google Now, the Google Search app has become even more of a single hub for all things Google, be it accessing Google Apps like Calendar, Google+, Drive, or the very impressive Google Voice - a more than capable competitor to Siri.

Google Search is free to download for iPhone and iPad and you can read more about Google Now here.

What’s New in 3.0

Answers before you ask with Google Now:
• start your day with weather & traffic conditions
• get updates on your favorite teams & news

Learn more about location
To provide up-to-the-minute information, Google Now turns on Location Services. Even though the icon stays on, the app has minimal battery impact:

• The app doesn’t turn on the GPS. Instead, it receives passive updates from nearby cell towers and WIFI hot spots.
• If your battery is running low, the app pauses location updates.
• The app stays asleep unless your device moves a long distance.

If you see an impact on your battery life, please tell us about it by tapping feedback in the app settings. You can also turn this feature on and off as you like in the privacy section of the app settings. Learn more at http://goo.gl/9GKI2

Thinking of buying a new iMac, Macbook, iPhone or iPad, but don’t exactly want to pay the full retail price found on launch day? Dealnews has analyzed over a year’s worth of Apple deals to help buyers with when to buy a Mac, or more specially, when they can expect to find the best discounts on Apple hardware. Here’s the quick rundown:

  • MacBook Pro 15.4″ with Retina Display - wait 9 months and save $350
  • iPhone 5 - wait 3 months and save $73
  • iPad (current gen) – wait 1 month and save $59
  • iPad mini – wait 3 months and save $29

Since Apple doesn’t normally slash prices on their iDevices (save for perhaps Boxing day and Black Friday), the best places to find discounts are resellers like MacMallAmazon and even the Apple eBay store (certified refurbished products). Check out the infographic after the break.

Head over to dealnews to read more about when to buy a Mac.

CARROT, the quirky todo list “with a personality”, has received its next major update (V3.0) and adds three most-requested features from its users: the ability to set reminders/due dates, repeating tasks and Siri Integration (have Siri add tasks into CARROT for you). But since this is not your ordinary todo app, these first have to be unlocked by actually completing tasks on your list (mark tasks as completed, score points and level up). Think of it as an incentive to get productive. Just don’t expect it be as complex as Things (TMA Review) or OmniFocus; it was designed to be fast, simple and most of all, fun to use. CARROT is now free for a day as well, so grab it for your iPhone, unlock all the goodies and get busy.

What’s New in Version 3.0

Greetings, lazy humans. Because I am a benevolent overlord, I come bearing an update with your most-requested features.

- Reminders/due dates (Unlocks at Level 18). Having trouble remembering what you’re supposed to be doing? Don’t worry, it happens to all meatbags! Just double tap on a task to set a reminder.

- Hard difficulty mode (Level 22). Looking for a challenge? Type “CARROT hard mode” in my command line and I’ll get fed up with you much more quickly.

- Siri sync (Level 24**). Get Siri to do your dirty work for you! Tell her, “Remind me to walk the dog on Friday at 9pm” and I’ll import the task the next time you launch me. You must have a list named either “Reminders” or “CARROT” in Apple’s Reminders app for this feature to work. For more details, tap Support > Help in my menu. (**Note: If you’re already above level 24, you have to level up one or two times before I’ll explain and unlock the feature for you.)

- Recurring tasks (Level 28). Sick of entering tasks like “blink” over and over again? You’re in luck! Now, when setting a reminder, you can make common tasks repeat.

ios-6.1.3-update

The lastest iOS update – version 6.1.3 – is now available for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. This primarily fixes the security hole that was found in 6.1, one that allowed access to the phone module right from the locked screen without entering the correct passcode. The update also brings improvements to Maps for users in Japan. As for jailbreakers, you may want to stay away from 6.1.3 for the time being, as David Wang (one of the devs for the evasi0n and their untethered iOS 6.x jailbreak) told Forbes several weeks ago that the 6.1.3 beta 2 update patched one of the bugs that the Jailbreak exploits. This means that 6.1.3 isn’t likely to work with the only untethered jailbreak solution at this time. For the rest of you though, you can grab the latest iOS update right from within Settings –> General –> Software Update or on your desktop via iTunes.

Through a series of taps in just the right spots, a hidden Game Boy Advance emulator will be revealed, thus allowing you to play all your favorite GBA roms you might have kept somewhere on an external hard drive. The app costs $1.99 and likely won’t last much longer on the App Store, so if your phone’s not jailbroken and you’d like to play some Mario on your iPhone, you may want to grab it before it’s pulled.
