Temple Run 2: Frozen Shadows

I don’t get around to posting news much because I’d rather spend my time playing and reviewing games.  But, as a self-proclaimed infinite runner addict I felt there were a couple of items this week that I should pass on to the loyal fans of TouchMyApps.com.  First of all, unless you’ve chosen to completely ignore the “this is what’s popular” section of every news and review site you’re at least familiar with Temple Run 2.  And if you haven’t yet tried it, you really should.  In case you haven’t been properly motivated yet, maybe this latest update will help.  Released on December 2nd, the new version of one of the premier mobile infinite runners added a new world called Frozen Shadows.  Not only does this foray into an icy realm look incredible, but it adds a slick new snowboard to the mix as well as some aggressive moneys that not only follow you but jump out at you from the sides of the course.  Plus, according to the developers this is only the first in a new series of updates that will launch sporadically throughout 2016, reaffirming Imangi’s commitment to their products.

Power Hover

This one isn’t really an infinite runner, but it kind of looks like one from the video.  Regardless, Power Hover looks pretty awesome.  Your goal is to collect as much energy as possible so you can restore power to your robot village and unlock upgrades to make your journey even more successful.  Whether you’re swimming with sharks or dodging large robotic spiders this games seems to have some incredible level design.  It won’t be released until December 10th, but I thik it’s definitely worth keeping an eye out for.  Check out the video below to judge for yourself.

One of my biggest joys as a reviewer is being able to report about games on the App Store that stand out from the pack, and A Day In The Woods is just such a game.  You can check out my review here: To Grandmother’s House We Go.  To celebrate the Halloween season, RetroEpic Software has added a Halloween themed skin (called, appropriately enough, a “season” within the game).  Unlike the other seasons in the game which have to be unlocked via collecting stars, this one will be available immediately once you’ve updated after the October 22 release of the new version.  If you don’t already own the game, RetroEpic has temporarily knocked a dollar off of the game’s price as well.  You can download it here:

A Day In The Woods RetroEpic Software, A Day In The Woods (TMA Review) – $3.99

The sale only lasts until Halloween, so grab it while you can.

I’ve never hid the fact that I love the combination “choose your own adventure” / RPG style of entertainment that has come to be known as the “gamebook adventure”.  It’s also common knowledge if you’ve been with me long enough that my favorite developer in this genre is Tin Man Games.  They’ve been developing this form of electronic entertainment since 2010, and based on their latest announcements they have no intention of slowing down.  That’s great news for fans like me.

20151006-tinmangames-orlandes

The first tidbit is something that will satiate your current game playing needs.  The developer has recently released not one but TWO entries in their freshman series, the tales of Orlandes.  This series started with An Assassin In Orlandes, which I reviewed here (disregard the fact that it’s on a different site).  This was followed by several other tales in the land of Orlandes, occasionally intermixed with adventures from other realms.  It’s time for the series to conclude (or at least take a hiatus) with Gamebook Adventures 11: Songs of the Mystics and Gamebook Adventures 12: Asuria Awakens.  I have no reason to believe these installments will be any less enthralling than their predecessors, so get ready for some great interactive reading.

20151006-tinmangames-kickstarter

For those that have been around those “ancient” treasure troves of knowledge known as bookstores, you might recall that the combination of CYOA and RPG began with a series called Fighting Fantasy.  Tin Man Games has faithfully recreated and enhanced many of these original tales, and now they want to tackle the very first, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain.  They’ll be launching a Kickstarter campaign soon so that interested parties can help them make this the best modern version of the classic that they can make.  The Fighting Fantasy offerings that are available are already pretty impressive, so I can’t wait to see what they do with this one.

20151006-tinmangames-warhammer

Finally, Tin Man Games has partnered with Games Workshop to bring the Legacy of Dorn trilogy to electronic devices everywhere.  The Warhammer universe is not something I’m particularly versed in, but here’s a synopsis of the first installment:

You are a veteran Space Marine of the Imperial Fists Chapter. Equipped with powerful Terminator armour and armed with the deadliest weapons that the Adeptus Astartes wield, you are a symbol of the Emperor’s might. Trapped aboard the space hulk Herald of Oblivion and the only survivor of your squad, you must fight your way through the aliens and heretics that infest the star vessel and find a way to escape the horror and return to your Chapter.

Given the significance and incredible popularity of the Warhammer IP, I’m sure the attention to detail in this effort will be second to none.

You can check out the latest two installments of the Orlandes saga now, while the other two electronic gamebooks are still being lovingly crafted.

Madfinger Games has been on the iOS scene since 2009, and I’d say they’ve got the first / third person shooter formula down pretty good at this point.  It started with Shadowgun, which was one of the few third person shooters I’ve really gotten into on any platform, and then they moved to the Dead Trigger series.  Now they’ve unleashed Unkilled on us, and it’s clear they’ve refined the game mechanics they established in their previous zombie franchise.  Apparently I’m not the only one that feels this way, because the game has been downloaded more than 3 million times since its release.

20150929-unkilled-2

What personally appeals to me about Unkilled is that it’s an FPS that is truly designed for mobiles.  The missions are short, so you can play one or two when you can squeeze in the time or you can play a whole bunch at once if you want.  The auto fire makes for a smooth controlling experience, and “purists” can still have their manual fire option if they wish.  From a design point of view it’s nice that you’re actually fighting alongside other soldiers, which surprisingly is a tactic that is still not very widely used in this type of game.  And the best part for me is that while it looks really good it still runs quite nicely on my aging iPad 2.  It’s getting a lot harder to find that combination in visually intense games these days.

So if you’re into numbers and statistics like me, Madfinger Games was kind enough to release some such data to celebrate their milestone of 3 million downloads.  I was just going to paste the text in here, but since they were kind enough to provide a cool infographic I thought I’d pass that along instead:

20150929-unkilled-milestone

Of course what you really need to do is check it out for yourself.  Get the iOS version on the App Store, or treat your Android device via Google Play.

Colpol might not be a household name in America, but they’ve certainly been busy on the App Store with more than 100 games available for download.  I’ve actually mentioned several of their games in my “10 App Store Games To Watch” articles over time.  One thing I’ve noticed about their catalog is they seem to focus on simple casual games, which is perfectly fine for a mobile market.  It looks like their starting to expand their scope, however, both in content and location.  Colopl is gearing up to open a North American division of their company, and their first release is going to be an action / RPG called Rune Story.

The game will be a story driven, quest based affair, but you’ll be able to hook up with up to three other players to take on epic bosses that would otherwise make you curl up in a corner and cry.  There will be more than 100 character and weapon combinations to unlock, so those that are into grinding and collecting should feel right at home.  There’s also going to be a city building element lest you feel like you’re cheating on your Clash of Clans time.  It definitely sounds like an ambitious project for the folks at Colopl, but if the preliminary video is any indication I think the players will be happy with the results.

No release date has been set yet as far as I’m aware, so if you head on over to the site and pre-register now you’ll receive a special Rune Sword when the game is made available worldwide.

The developers of the awesome “dodge ‘em all” series Tilt To Live and the free-to-play strategy game Outwitters are at it again.  This time they’re taking on the galaxy with Space Food Truck, a quirky combination of Star Trek and Diner Rush.  Okay, it’s really not like either of those things, but I bet that got your attention.  Your mission, should you choose to accept it, it to scour the galaxy for the perfect ingredients to make the best dishes to serve all your clients.  It will take the combined efforts of all four of your crew members, which can conveniently be controlled by multiple players.  You can play the game solo, but the optimal configuration is to have one person control each crew member.  The game is conceptually complete, but the good folks at One Man Left Studios are coming to Kickstarter for your help.20150721-sft-2

So what’s the money for?  Here’s a list of some of the things the developers wish to achieve:

  • Online play, include asynchronous play when you can’t finish a game in one sitting
  • 38 unique events to rock your world
  • An infinite variety of recipes
  • Professional voice actors

There’s plenty more as well, but frankly they do a much better job of explaining it than me.  Go check out their Kickstarter page here: Space Food Truck on Kickstarter.  In the mean time, you can also peruse their current iOS offerings: One Man Left on the App Store.

Note that this will initially be a desktop based game, but they have recently announced a mobile release as well.  Let’s make sure they decide to take the game that far.

Streetfood Tycoon was always one of my favorite street vendor time management games, but leave it to Kuyi Mobile to feel like they need to make it even better.  There was already plenty to serve, tons of fun customers and lots of goals to meet.  This time around they’ve decided to tackle pop culture, new challenges and even pay homage to their homeland.

  • Daily Challenges – come back day after day to unlock new items and upgrades for your cart
  • Like spoofs?  Meet Jun Snow from Game of Throngs, Steep Curry from Warriorz (a spoof of their own game Warriors of Nom Nom), and more…
  • If you’re from the Philippines you might recognize local favorites like Red Star, Monty and others… and if you’re not get busy looking them up

This is one of those free-to-play games that you actually can complete without spending any IAP (I have), but if you download and like it toss the devs a couple of bucks anyway.

I’m certainly as much a fan of zombie games as the next guy, but there are other undead specimens that are just as cool and often tend to go virtually unnoticed.  The upcoming game The Frankenstein Wars takes the notion that someone has managed to harness the secrets of Dr. Frankenstein and create an army of piecemeal soldiers that feel no pain and can definitely wreak havoc.  You actually control the fate of two brothers, and it’s up to you whether they become allies to stop the impending invasion or if they choose to be mortal enemies as one vies for ultimate power.

frankenstein-wars-concepts

While story will certainly be key to this adventure, the game goes well beyond the scope of normal interactive gamebooks.  You’ll explore interactive maps, follow branching, non-linear storylines, and eventually decide the fate of two different characters.  Your goals will change as the story progresses, and your theoretical victory will be affected by your pace – the longer you take to reach the enemy, the stronger they will be.  Weather can actually direct the story, and you’ll even get to command whole battalions of troops.  The scope of the game sounds much grander than anything we’ve experienced previously in a gamebook adventure, and I for one am pretty excited about it.

It appears that The Frankenstein Wars is slated to ship in December on both iOS and Android platforms, and there is currently a Kickstarter campaign so the developers can gather a few additional funds to tidy things up a bit.  Head on over and check it out.

It sounds kind of ominous saying that Dark Future is coming soon, but don’t sweat it – I really am just talking about a game here.  The electronic gaming community seems to be exploding with Games Workshop content lately, and while I’ll be the first to admit I know little about the company or their properties I’m aware that they’ve been around for a long time and their stuff seems to be quite popular.  This particular IP takes place in the post apocalyptic America of 2023, which isn’t too far around the corner from us now.

news-dark-future-2

You run an agency that helps clean up the wasteland between Patrolled Zones, making sure the NoGos don’t try to go where they shouldn’t go.  You’ll have to manage both cars and drivers, making sure that jobs get handled and drivers have everything they need to do their tasks.  The press release describes this as a “turn based strategy game, played out in simultaneous real-time action”.  I assume that means everyone will “move” and then you’ll get to see the results of your choices.  However it ultimately works out, if the game itself looks half as good as the teaser video, this is literally going to be one wild ride.

I’ve seen nothing yet to indicate what platform(s) this bad boy will arrive on, but I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that it at least lands on iOS devices.  The developer, Auroch Digital, has already teamed up with Games Workshop to produce two outings in the Chainsaw Warrior universe for iOS, so it seems logical that Apple’s mobile platform would be one target for Dark Future: Blood Red States as well.
