The wait for an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini is finally over. Team evad3rs has moments ago released the evasi0n jailbreak, which isn’t only untethered (meaning you can reboot without having to “tether” to a computer), but is compatible with all iDevices running iOS 6.0 through 6.1. iPhone 5 users can now get back to using awesome Cydia apps like SBSettings, Zephyr and Springtomizer 2, just several of the non-Apple sanctioned apps that seriously enhances the whole iOS experience. To get started, check out the evasi0n FAQ page for step-by-step instructions on how to install this Jailbreak. But before you continue – and assuming you want to run iOS 6.1 while Jailbroken – it is recommended that you update your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad via iTunes, rather than directly from your device –> settings (aka OTA).

The untethered Jailbreak solution for iOS 5.1.1 we’d posted about earlier this week has finally arrived with the public release of Absinthe 2.0.

After copious amounts of work and many sleepless nights Absinthe 2.0 is finally here to jailbreak your device. This release has been a large collaborative effort between Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Teams (Jailbreak Dream Team)

This jailbreak supports firmware 5.1.1 ONLY and is again one of the most easiest jailbreaks to use

Absinthe 2.0 is compatible with a host of recent iDevices, including the iPhone 3GS/4/4S, iPod Touch 3G/4G and iPad 1/2/3. That’s right. iPad 3 owners can finally jailbreak their device and install their favorite Cydia apps. Instructions, links and more info after the break.

From greenpois0n:

Using Absinthe 2.0

1. Make a backup of your device in iTunes by right clicking on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.

2. Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings – General – Reset – Erase all Content and Settings. This will make the jailbreak process much faster.

3. Open Absinthe and be sure you are still connected via USB cable to your computer.

4. Click ‘Jailbreak’ and wait…. just be patient and do not disconnect your device.

5. Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before. (restoring this backup will return all the content previously on your device ie, apps, photos, etc.)

How To Untether Jailbreak 5.1.1 if you’re already jailbroken:

  • Just search for and install “Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether” from Cydia.

Absinth Jailbreak Tool

For those of you who’re eagerly awaiting the 5.1.1 untethered Jailbreak (especially all the new iPad owners out there), Dev Team member pod2g tweeted some great news yesterday. It appears that an untethered jailbreak is on the verge of being released, likely before the week’s over.

Thanks to awesome work of @planetbeing and @pimskeks, we’re near ready for a release. Now it’s a matter of days.

From pod2g’s blog, we know that most recent iDevices will be supported, including the iPad 3 (Wifi/CDMA), though the AppleTV 3 seems to be out of luck (the iPad 3 Global model hasn’t been tested yet, but it should work). And according to iDB, the soon to be released 5.1.1 jailbreak is likely to be called Absinthe 2.0. If so, it will be the successor to the original that became the first tool to successfully jailbreak (untethered) the A5 based iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Pretty soon, the jailbreak community will finally be able to install their favorite Cydia apps on their iPad 3. Good news indeed.

To all the early adopters of the new iPad who are hoping to add Cydia to their retina-tablet ASAP, fret not as the Dev Team have posted some encouraging news regarding its eventual Jailbreak. This comes on the heels of the iPad 2 running iOS 5.1 being jailbroken by hacker @i0n1c, which he shared with the rest of the community via several pics he posted on his twitter account. Here’s the “good news” the Dev Team posted on their blog:

  • We can confirm that the method used to jailbreak the iPad2 4 months ago (before corona) still works even in 5.1.  That means we’ll at least be able to get our foot in the door to get the required kernel dumps on the iPad3.  That’s an important step, but by no means is it the end of the story.
  • Those of you following @i0n1c may have noticed he’s already tweeted pictures of his iPad2 jailbroken at 5.1.  As far as we know, he’s using a method completely unrelated to the one mentioned above.  That would be great news!
  • We’ve also seen bits and pieces of an entirely different jailbreak method being investigated by someone close to the Cydia repo scene.

That’s three different angles, and we’re not even including the continuous work @pod2g makes towards a new jailbreak!  As always, keep in mind this is very preliminary progress, and it’s impossible to predict how or when these things turn out.

And one important thing to note for would-be jailbreakers is NOT to “update your new iPad3 past whatever iOS it comes shipped with”. The blog post explains that it’s entirely possible that some of the new iPads have OSes other than 5.1 installed. So if by slim chance you get one with 5.0.1 onboard, best play it safe and don’t upgrade to 5.1 for the time being (assuming you’re hoping to eventually jailbreak the device).

By the looks of it, iPad 3 owners likely won’t have to wait months before a jailbreak solution is offered, unlike that of the iPad 2.

Tweaks to extend Siri’s functionality have been rolling in over the past few days, one of which was VoiceUtils, a tool that allows users to open apps on their iPhone 4S via voice commands (among other things). The latest to hit Cydia is Lingual, a hack that essentially transforms Siri into your personal translator. Created by CodeThemed, and based on the AssistantExtensions platform for Siri development, Lingual taps into Microsoft Bing’s Translate API and is able to translate from english to over 30+ languages through Siri. So you can ask “What’s Where’s the bus stop in Spanish” and Siri will display the translated text for you momentarily. It won’t actually say aloud the translation, but it’s still really neat nonetheless. Lingual is free to download and can be found by simply searching for it on Cydia. Check out the video demo of how it works after the gap.

VoiceUtils, a newly released Cydia app developed by Nick Frey, finally allows Siri to open stock and third party apps, unlock the device, reboot/restart/respring the phone, and even enter Safe Mode. These actions were previously not available to Siri, and many users have wondered why Apple has decided not to (for the time being at least) include basic functionality such as launching apps. At least now for iPhone 4S jailbreakers, the free Cydia utility will give them more control over their device and simple actions like restarting the SpringBoard is only a voice command away. Check out the video demo of VoiceUtils in action after this space.

RedSn0w, the popular jailbreaking tool has been updated to version 0.9.10b4 and now includes the long awaited fix for iBooks not being able to run on jailbroken iOS 5.0.1 devices.

The b4 version of redsn0w incorporates the 5.0.1 fix for iBooks, and also for sporadic problems with launchctl.  Thanks to @xvolks for merging the iBooks (sandbox) fix from @comex’s github into the overall corona untether from @pod2g!  As usual, you can choose to install the fix either by re-running redsn0w over your existing jailbreak (de-select Cydia if you do that), or by installing the corona package from Cydia (it’s the same set of files no matter which way you choose).

If you’ve previously jailbroken your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch using redsn0w, all you need to do is re-jailbreak it using 0.9.10b4, but do remember to uncheck the “Install Cydia” option beforehand. Conversely, you can run the latest version of the Corona package (1.0.4) on Cydia in order to use iBooks once again.

There’s a new Siri Port in town and this time, it’s completely legal (unlike this one). Brought to you by jailbreak developers chpwn and Ryan Petrich, Spire allows older (jailbroken) iOS 5 devices like the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3/4G and iPad 1 to run Siri. Available on Cydia as a 100mb download, the port will also require additional info from an iPhone 4S (needed to communicate with Apple’s servers) and a proxy server.

From chpwn’s blog:

Spire is my (along with Ryan Petrich) new tool for installing Siri on previously unsupported, but jailbroken, devices. Spire is a small download, but while installing it will download Siri itself (directly from Apple). Spire is available in Cydia right now — go get it! This will use about 100 MB of data, so please connect to Wi-Fi before installing.

However, Spire is not a complete solution. Apple still requires authorization to use Siri, so information from an iPhone 4S is still required. To insert this information, Spire allows you to enter your own proxy server address. I’ve put up a list of my ideas on how you might get access to a proxy; hopefully you can figure something out.

Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn’t have thecopyright issues encountered by previous attempts. Similarly, rather than directing all traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server.

Obviously, getting Spire to run is not exactly a seamless task. The biggest hurdle for those not technically savvy would be setting up their own proxy. chpwn’s detailed several steps on how you can accomplish this and get Siri communicating with Apple’s servers:

There’s any number of ways for you to get a proxy that will help you connect Siri to Apple. Here’s a few of my ideas:

  • westbaer’s SiriProxy fork
    • Own an iPhone 4S too: Maybe you already own an iPhone 4S, and just want Siri on another device of yours. This is simple; you can just use the above proxy yourself.
    • Find a friend: Maybe your friend has an iPhone 4S and will let you use their authentication tokens (maybe in exchange for some cool SiriProxy plugins). Then, you can share the authentication. Or, maybe you gave your relative your old iPhone when you got your iPhone 4S: now you can share your token and give them Siri.
  • Pay up: It’s very likely that soon we will see for-pay services online to rent you some space on a Siri proxy, attached to one of their iPhone 4S devices. I haven’t seen anything like this yet, but I’ll keep my eye out, and I would encourage anyone who is interested to set something like this up.
  • And now for something completely different: As I suggested earlier, you might be able to replace Siri entirely. A simple method might be to use Google Chrome’s speech “API” hooked up to some code to decode the Siri requests and parse Google’s result. Or, someone could hook it up to some logic backends like many of the clones available on Android: the possibilities are endless.

For those adventurous enough, you can grab Spire from Cydia; simply search for it and install it on your jailbroken iDevice. No new repos need to be added as Spire’s already available on the default BigBoss repository. Of course, you can always wait for Apple to officially release Siri on the iPad or iPhone 4, though that’s not looking likely, at least for the time being.

Several weeks ago, we saw chronic dev team member pod2g post a video of his untethered jailbreak on an iPod Touch running iOS 5. Well, for those of you eagerly anticipating its public release, the wait is finally over. The untethered exploit has just been incorporated into redsnow 0.9.10 and PwnageTool and works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G. One requirement is that they must be updated to iOS 5.0.1 beforehand. As for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners, they’ll have to wait some more as A5 devices haven’t been completely hacked yet. Fear not though, as pod2g has said that he’ll be looking at extending this untethered jailbreak to the latest iDevices in the near future. A quick rundown of how to install it right after the break.

The “Basic” Instructions as per Dev-Team Blog:

A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam.  We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

Here are the basic steps for how to get it:

  • The untether is for iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPad1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G
  • If you have one of those devices and are not on 5.0.1 yet, update now!  The SHSH window is still open for 5.0.1  If you unlock via ultrasn0w or gevey, make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW!  See the guides at places like iClarified.com if you don’t know how.  Once you’re at 5.0.1, use the latest redsn0w 0.9.10 to both jailbreak and untether.
  • If you’re already at 5.0.1 with a tethered jailbreak, you have two choices: either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak (deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that), or install the Cydia package prepared by the chronic devteam.  The patches are the same regardless of which you choose.
  • Some of you are using a hybrid 5.0/5.0.1 configuration.  If so, do not attempt to install this untether over that setup!  You will most likely get into a reboot cycle.  Do a sync and fresh restore to 5.0.1 then install the jailbreak + untether.

A pain in the neck if you’re away from your desktop/laptop. According to pod2g, this jailbreak will also work on iOS 5.0.1:

Tons of questions from my nice followers. Too early to answer. Will work on iOS 5.0.1, will try iPad 2 and 4S after others are ready.

No word on when this untethered Jailbreak will be released for the public, though it’s probably safe to assume that it won’t be too long now before jailbreakers can finally go untethered for iOS 5.
