iTête à iTête – Interview with Arto & Peter from Dicework Games – Rimelands: Hammer Of Thor was actually the game we originally wanted to do.
Despite there being over 150 000 apps on the AppStore, many of which are games, quality RPGs are few and far between. And even fewer of them don’t go the Japanimation console style RPG route. Frankly, only three come to my mind – our own shigzeo’s favourite The Quest with its many addons, the excellent old-school Undercroft (TMA Review) and, of course, the much hyped Diablo-clone Dungeon Hunter (TMA Review). And don’t even get me started on Ravensword: The Fallen King (TMA Review). But they should beware, because it seems a new contender to the RPG throne is in the works. I’m talking about the game that came to my attention recently – Rimelands: Hammer Of Thor. Intrigued, I immediately contacted the developers of this ambitious project and secured an interview to learn more details.
Dicework Games is a small company located in the city of Tampere in Finland and consists of the CEO and lead designer Arto Koistinen and the talented graphics artist Peter Finnberg. Having been laid off during company negotiations just 1.5 years after THQ Wireless’s acquisition of Universomo, they decided it was to go solo and started their own company. Their first game was the critically acclaimed Diceworks which was a test of both their skill as well as how well they could do at the AppStore. And now they are steadily finishing up the project they originally conceived when their company formed – a classic Rogue-style RPG game titled Rimelands: Hammer Of Thor. And today I have both of them on the line to talk about it!

Revolution Software is one of the titans of adventure gaming. The creators of the legendary Broken Sword series have recently blessed the iPhone with its two greatest adventure games to date – Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered (BaSSR) and Broken Sword: Director’s Cut (BSDC). I have been lucky enough to secure an interview with Charles Cecil – the founder of Revolution Software and the director of the games that made the adventure Hall of Fame.

The iDevice controlled, quad-propeller Parrot AR.Drone helicopter debuted at this year’s CES. And we got some mouth time with the kind folks behind this dream toy! Joining me today is Michael Pastor – the Marketing coordinator for the AR.Drone project.
At the end of 2009, I was caught listening different. TapTunes had me shuffling albums in new ways and enjoying the cleverness of my index finger whilst bopping out to Ice Cube. You needn’t have lived under a rock for the last year to be ignorant of Inotia’s creator, Com2uS – you just need to have been removed to Antarctica about 10 years ago. Of course, Com2uS have more under their bonnets than just the excellent RPG series. They have quite a few celebrated App Store hits: Baseball Slugger 3D, Sniper VS Sniper, Baseball Superstars – to name but a few. Well, just before Inotia: A Wanderer of Luone’s debut, I visited the Com2uS headquarters in Seoul, South Korea’s Silicon Valley and met with two fine gentlemen: Joony Koo and Andrew Park, who are are bigger gamers in one day than I am in a month of Sundays.
iTête à iTête – Building from the ground up is the answer! – An interview with Alexandre Leboucher of Agharta Studio
In the iDevice development community, ground-up production of high-profile games is still quite unusual. Well, joining me today is Alexandre Leboucher who feels very strongly that this is the ONLY way forward. And it may be worth taking his words seriously since he and his small team form Agharta Studio – the creators of the recent turn-based strategy blockbuster, Rogue Planet.
iTête à iTête – Heroes of iPhone and iPod Touch – An interview with Eugene and Andrey of the Palm Heroes Team
When I reviewed Palm Heroes in August, it was one of the best games on the iPhone and things haven’t changed since. Nevertheless, the developers continue updating it with better and better controls, graphics, new maps and much much more in the works. Following the 1.1 update that brought into life a completely rebuilt interface, the Palm Heroes team are working to hard to get version 1.2 to the App Store in the next couple of weeks. The list of updates shows the enormous amount of work they are continuing to put into the game:
- better response to fingers. “quick tapping lag” solved!
- manual zoom on “pinch in”
- autoscroll in autozoom can be turned off now
- Czech language support
- minimap is scrollable now
- new “hero” button when infobar is open
- buttons “switch hero” and “menu” exchanged places for more convenient control
- better description of controls in the help section
- more maps to play
And today, Eugene and Andrei of the Palm Heroes Team have agreed to join me and talk about their experience of developing such a complex product for the iPhone, as well as to share some thoughts on the future of both their products and the iPhone in general. My questions are still in bold.
