For the longuest time the absence of quality console jRPG games from the iDevice was a gaping hole just waiting to be filled. Early this year Square Enix re-released FINAL FANTASY and FINAL FANTASY II for the iDevice, then followed up with CHAOS RINGS, a celebrated RPG that I thought could have been so much more. What we were left with was the excellent port of the PSP classic – Crimson Gem Saga. Now you can add another to the list thanks to Gameloft’s ambitious title Eternal Legacy.
One of the unexpected tentpoles of Apple’s September 1st event was the demo of Epic’s new game running on the iPhone 4 in the full glory of the Unreal 3 engine. The graphics quality was such that many wondered if it was completely pre-rendered. As a response Epic released Epic Citadel, a tech demo of the capabilities of the engine that proved they were not fooling around. And roughly 3 months later - Infinity Blade - Epic’s first true entry onto the App Store arena has seen the light.
In the myriad of Tower Defense titles available on the App Store, only a handful truly warrant attention. Origin8′s Sentinel: Mars Defense and the sequel Earth Defense certainly fall into this category, having been critically acclaimed by both the press and iDevice gamers. Third time’s the charm they say and with the recent release of Sentinel 3: Homeworld the developers are obviously aiming for another hit TD game.
With the horrendous amount of various Action/Shooter titles on the App Store, it is increasingly more difficult to find something that jumps out at you. Sure, there are loads of dual-stick and side/vertical-scrolling shooters, but to find anything truly original you’ll have to dig really deep. The most recent entry by Gaijin Entertainment however, brings a refreshing look on how an action title could be done on the iDevice in Braveheart.
I enjoy a good arcade style racing game. Daytona U.S.A., the Burnout series, Split/Second and NFS: Most Wanted to name just a few. So when EA announced Need for Speed Hot Pursuit I got excited. Then the trailers arrived to show off the game in action and I became ecstatic. And now that Hot Pursuit is released, is it going to join the ranks of some of my favorite arcade racers? Only one way to be sure, read on to find out.
Quality space-sims are far and few between even on the PC, especially if we’re talking about the open-world variety. There is the classic Elite, Origin’s Privateer series and the fantastic X-series. That’s about it. Of course one might say it’s a bit of a niche genre, but I say – to hell with that, it’s just so much fun! So after spending a considerable amount of time with FISHLABS’ sequel Galaxy on Fire 2, I can attest that we finally have a worthy entry in the genre on the iDevice.
If you haven’t heard by now, Cut the Rope is the Angry Birds killer. After having spent some time with it, I can begin to see where they might make that claim. Of course it’s a completely different style of gameplay than Angry Birds, but from my point of view it’s a bit more accessible from a difficulty standpoint. Besides, how can you not love Om Nom? Will it’s dethroning of the champion be permanent? I’m not sure, but in the mean time I’m just going to enjoy it for what it is – an incredibly fun physics based puzzler with an adorable protagonist.
I have never been a big fan of keeping a ToDo list. It always felt that it takes more time to write things down to do later, than actually doing them, thus wasting valuable minutes and attention span. But that was until I became a project manager. Whenever people speak about a city-simulation game the first one that comes to mind is, of course the SimCity franchise: SimCity™ Deluxe (ChiffaN’s SimCity™ Deluxe review, shigzeo’s SimCity™ review). And stunned by EA’s glory, they often forget that the SimCity franchise, while the best known, is far from being the only city-building simulation out there.
Last autumn, a game so deceptively simple took the App Store by storm. I’m talking, of course, about Canabalt – the one button game where you control a guy fleeing for his life across the tops of buildings in the midst of an alien attack. One year and big publisher later, enter Mirror’s Edge, a title that takes the same basic concept to a whole new dimension. It had a long and winding road to the iPhone, debuting as one of the first major iPad games nearly 6 months ago.
