One of the things I love about the app store is the sheer amount of choice. Don’t get me wrong, some days I hate it as well also for that very same reason. But, when you like a specific genre, such as TD games for example, it’s a nice place to be able to visit. Sentinel, by Origin8 is the latest addition to the TD bunch. I won’t go into explaining TD games as it has already been done here at Touchmyapps in several reviews, but Sentinel brings in an element of science fiction and nice looking graphics which does add a fresh vibe.
It’s tempting to judge a game by the companionship it keeps. Payback falls victim to this by the obvious comparisons to the original GTA I and GTA II. It has the immense task of measuring up to one of the greatest and well recognized gaming franchise in current history. So, does Payback meet these great expectations? Does it deserve a place in the App Store pantheon of great games? Is it worth spending $6.99? I say yes. Payback is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive gaming experience the App Store has to offer.
With the apparent death of the floppy drive in the mid-1990s, there were a number of replacement technologies that competed for the title as heir-apparent. These included:
** ZIP Drive, a magnetic drive that held 100MB in the beginning and grew to 250MB;
** Magneto Optical Drive, a rewritable optical disk that held 128MB to about 2.3GB for the 3.5” version whilst the bigger 5.25” version held
SimCity has been published in the App Store. And, it is an iPhone App. And, it is an EA job. Prompted by those facts, I think we can make some hasty conclusions. On the iPhone side: It is touch controlled ala the iPhone interface. It is pocketable. It may be the game that god-game fans have waited for. On the EA side: it is not a unique release. It is massive. It is beautifully rendered. It has some major bugs. And, in classic EA tradition, it reaches a bit too high.
ngmoco:) has quickly become a developer many are keeping a close eye on for the iPhone. While they may not have released a bundle of games thus far, the ones that ngmoco have are both fun and unique in their own way (Topple, Dr. Awesome). With the recent release of Dropship, ngmoco has outdone themselves this time and quite possibly have put together the ultimate Arcade game that is as addictive as it is impressive.
When was the last time anyone played a racing game with a Snail as the main choice of character or ride? Never? Almost never? That’s why when I first saw this game, I had no idea what to expect. Was I in for a “snail-paced” and boring racer? Or as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover? Even after just several minutes of Snail Mail action, I knew I had the answer to my question. Snail Mail is an amazingly fun and fast paced racing game for the iPhone.
Over the years, countless puzzle games have flooded the market. A large percentage of them have been either uninspired or unoriginal, duplicating the same idea over and over. Once in awhile though, one would emerge out of nowhere and catch us by surprise for their uniqueness and addictive gameplay. Super Puzzle Fighter II in 1996, Lumines and Meteos in 2005, Puzzle Quest in 2007 and finally Frenzic for the iPhone in 2008. First released for the Mac OS X by The Iconfactory and ARTIS Software more than a year ago, Frenzic is a breath of fresh in the puzzle genre.
Games sure have changed over the years. Developers are constantly finding new ways of bringing innovation to game design in order to engage the modern gamer. Players want new ideas and innovations that capture the imagination. Well, Touch Physics is one of these games. It won’t win awards for 3D effects or graphics any time soon. What it will do though is captivate its players with gameplay and design.
Zombies on the iPhone…check. Defending against Zombies in an Apocalyptic World on the iPhone …check. IUGO Mobile Entertainment, the brains behind Toy Bot Diaries and Shaky Summit, has released yet another quality title on the iPhone. The moment I saw the words Zombie and IUGO together, I knew I was in for a treat.
The Tower Defense genre has been picking up steam in the last several years. Desktop Tower Defense, an internet flash game released in 2007, was played almost 16 million times after only four months of release. A simple search on google will yield countless websites devoted to the genre. It was only a matter of time before developers started pumping out such games on the iPhone.
