ARDefender (TMA Review), one of the more unique games for the iPhone, is now free for a limited time. Based on a technology developer int13 have called “Vision Based Augmented Reality”, ARDefender plays like a top-down castle defense shooter with an augmented reality twist. By pointing your iDevice’s camera at the accompanying pdf file, enemies come to life on your kitchen table, work desk and just about anywhere you can think of. Also free is the slingshot puzzle game Hungribles, brought you to by the devs who recently released Unstoppable Gorg for the iPad. Lots more freebies after the break, though as always, the price drops are only good for a limited time.
The weekend’s upon us and a number of App Store freebies are just waiting for a new home on your iDevice. Drop The Chicken, a popular iOS puzzle game clearly inspired by Cut the Rope (though it is addictive in its own right) is now free for a limited time. Also free is Alawar’s Zombie Samurai, a castle defense type game that incorporates Fruit Ninja’s swipe-to-slice mechanics. And if you’ve been planning on spending less time on the couch and more time in the gym, 6 Pack Promise could motivate you into working out those once rock-hard abs. Be sure to check out the rest of the roundup after the break!
Remedy Entertainment’s highly popular Death Rally, a gorgeous looking action/racing game for iOS, is now for a limited time. ChiffaN reviewed this remake of the 90′s hit a while back and gave it a Kiss It rating:
Regardless of the minor flaws, Death Rally is a unique and addictive blend of racing and shooting action that will hold your attention for quite some time. The experience offered is currently unmatched on the App Store and if you’re hungry for some high-speed destruction, Death Rally is definitely the choice for you. And did I mention that it’s universal?
Also free (for the entire week) is Rock Prodigy: Guitar, a Guitar Hero like app that makes learning the guitar fun and stress-free. The app is able to “listen” to your picking/strumming and the lessons will automatically pause if you’re playing the wrong notes and chords [Intro video]. Check out the rest of the recent freebies after the break.
Here’s another Apps Gone Free Roundup to keep your weekend busy with more apps to touch. Bulkypix’s popular physics puzzler Burn it All – Journey to the Sun is now free for a limited time. Chiffan reviewed this one and gave it a solid Grab It rating, even considering to be among the best casual puzzle games the iDevice has to offer. Also free today is Playrix’s highly rated match 3 title 4 Elements HD for the iPad (nearly 5000 4 1/2 star rating on iTunes), which has dropped from its regular price of $6.99. Check out the complete list of freebies right after the break.
Virtual City, the popular city-building simulation game from G5 Entertainment, is now free for a limited time for both the iPhone and iPad. Chiffan reviewed this one awhile back and had this to say (along with a Grab It rating):
There is no use comparing Virtual City to the SimCity series – they are simply completely different games. Whereas the more famous counterpart is centered on high-level city management, Virtual City brings the player closer to the masses, requiring to handle individual bus and truck routes rather than considering city-wide policies. Whether this is good or bad depends more on taste than anything else. In all respects it combines colourful detailed graphics, addictive gameplay and 50 challenging levels across 5 settings into an aspiring small-town mayor’s dream.
Previously priced at $4.99 and $6.99, this freebie shouldn’t be missed by those who enjoy simulation games in the SimCity vein.
Featured as “Today’s Gift” in the 12 Days of Christmas promo in Canada, NaturalMotion’s Icebreaker Hockey is free for a limited time. Thankfully, this freebie has been extended to App Stores internationally, so all iDevice gamers can enjoy this follow-up to their highly popular Backbreaker Football series. Check out the rest of the roundup after the break, but as always, act quickly as the price drops won’t last very long.
SEGA’s $0.99 holiday sale is still ongoing, but that hasn’t stopped them from dropping Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing – one of the best racers and closest thing you’ll get to Mario Kart on the iOS platform — to FREE.
The world’s fastest hedgehog, Sonic, and the SEGA All-Stars are zooming on to your iPhone and iPad for the ultimate party racing showdown. Race as your favorite character across 15 white-knuckle courses in a frantic race to the finish line.
Stay ahead of the pack by dodging traps, firing missiles and, if all else fails, wreaking havoc with your All-Star moves! Whether racing on your own, or battling it out with friends, anything can happen in this crazy competition where winning is only part of the fun!
If you still haven’t played Sonic Racing yet, be sure to grab this excellent racer and challenge your friends via either bluetooth or online.

Fans of point and click adventures will undoubtedly enjoy this Apps Gone Free roundup. Revolution’s highly regarded Broken Sword – The Smoking Mirror: Remastered is now free for an entire week (until Dec 29th). Dropped from its regular price of $6.99, this is the sequel to the original Broken Sword (TMA Review) and the crowning jewel of our App Store’s Best Adventure games roundup. Needless to say, you enjoy the genre, this is a freebie you definitely don’t want to miss out on. Lots more apps and games have gone free today, so be sure to grab them below before their prices go back up.
Apple’s once again giving away a fantastic game for free via Facebook. Two weeks ago, it was Where’s My Water. Now, iOS gamers can grab Pop Cap’s iconic match 3 Bejeweled on the house. The game was recently re-released on the App Store and is based on the best selling Bejeweled 3. The new game mode – Diamond Mine – is toxically addictive and has stolen all my free time over the past week (in case you’re wondering, my high score for this mode is 611,000).
Simply head on over to Facebook with this link, make sure you’re logged in, and click on the “Get your Free App” button. Then, “Like” the App Store and you should be taken to iTunes for the free download. If that doesn’t quite work, look out for the redeem code under “Congratulations”, and manually paste it in the iTunes redeem page. Do hurry though as the offer is only good while codes are still available.
PopCap, Bejeweled, – $0.99
With Christmas fast approaching, the App Store’s been seeing plenty of quality freebies of late. Halfbrick, the devs who brought you Fruit Ninja, has dropped the superbly addictive Jetpack Joyride to $0 for a limited time. Aside from its well designed one touch gameplay, the various achievements and purchasable new gear will keep you coming back for more…and more. Also free is Sentinel 3: Homeworld (TMA Review), the third installment in the excellent TD series by Origin8. And if you don’t mind a few ads here and there, Gameloft is now offering the solid hack ‘n slash Hero of Sparta II completely free.
Some of the apps in our roundup will be free until Christmas, though a number of them are only good for a very limited time. Act quickly!
