Have you ever wished that while travelling abroad, you could keep your own phone number AND not have to pay those exorbitantly high roaming rates? Well thanks a Latvian based company who also brought us VIR2SIM, their recently released Roamer app will let you do just that – keep your number while saving a bundle when overseas. Basically, you’ll need an unlocked iPhone/Android phone and a local SIM card from the city you’ll be travelling to. Then after activating the new SIM with the Roamer app, whenever calls are made to your home number, they’ll be re-routed to your new local number. According to Roamer, you can save up to 96% on those pesky roaming rates. For example, if you’re traveling to the UK, €10 credits is good for 250 minutes of incoming calls (€0.04/min). Outgoing calls are slightly more expensive (depending on destination), but the catch here – and this only applies to outgoing calls – is that they require an internet connection, be it via a data plan or WIFI.

According to Roamer’s FAQ, here’s how to use their service:

1) Install Roamer from AppStore or Google Play. The app is FREE! Don’t forget to add calling credits to your Roamer account before departure.

2) Launch Roamer and park your number before departure (Depart Now). It is done by forwarding incoming calls to our service number in your area, which is assigned exclusively to you. Call charges are debited from your Roamer account.

3) Activate local SIM card in Roamer. Buy a SIM card in destination country. Launch Roamer to activate your new SIM card. At the moment of activation you need an Internet connection: WiFi or GPRS or higher. Now, when somebody calls your usual home number, the calls will reach you while you are abroad. To make a call, just launch Roamer, choose the contact, press call and wait for a callback. Only when the call is initiated you need an Internet connection: WiFi or GPRS or higher. The other party will see your usual number as a Caller ID.

The key is to “park” your number before leaving your home country. If you do forget, you can still avoid roaming charges and take advantage of their low roaming rates, the only difference is that Roamer will assign you a new temporary number from your home city (basically you’ll have to give your friends/family/colleagues this new number so they can still call you without having to pay long distance).

As for credit packs, they can be purchased from within the app as an IAP if using an iPhone (paypal for Android users). Denominations are as follows: 9.99, 19.99, 29.99 and 49.99 EUR or US$ 12.99, 25.99, 38.99, 64.99. Check out the video below for more details or head directly to Roamer’s website for rates to all 216 supported countries.

If you find picking up people from the airport a chore (check flight times, calculate when you should leave home etc.), let Just Landed for iPhone help. It’s currently free, well designed and actually works. Unlike a host of other flight tracking apps available for iOS (i.e Flight Track), Just Landed simply tracks inbound flights. Enter the airline code and flight number, and the app will show the landing time, terminal number and approximate driving time based on traffic conditions. And so long as location services is turned on, it’ll even notify you in the background when the the flight has landed and when you should leave for the airport.

Here’s a notification in the locked screen reminding me that the flight will be landing soon, as well as fact that I should be leaving home for the drive over. The cool thing about Just Landed is that it’ll update itself even if you’re on the move. So if your location has changed since you entered the flight info into the app, it’ll also update the corresponding times for when you should start heading out to the airport.

Just Landed is definitely a great little app to for those airport pick ups. And it’s a total bonus that it’s currently free for a limited time.

Just Landed™ Little Details, Just Landed™ - Free

★★★ Free for a limited time. ★★★

✈ Reminds you when it’s time to go to the airport
✈ Uses traffic data when estimating driving time
✈ Notifies you about any flight status changes
✈ Text the person you’re picking up on arrival

Just Landed is the only app that tells you when to go to the airport to pick someone up!

★★★ Featured by Apple multiple times. ★★★

“Seamless airport pickup” – Lifehacker
“Gorgeous UI” – MacLife
“Beautifully designed” – Mashable

Just Landed™ intelligently updates itself using your current location and the latest flight and traffic information. Just go about your day and the app will tell you when it’s time to head for the airport. Never be late to pick someone up again!

*** Concerned about battery life? Read below. ***

Just Landed™ uses a form of background location monitoring called “geofencing” that was introduced in iOS 4. We do this to keep your airport reminders up to date even if you happen to move location while the app is in the background. This form of location monitoring uses dramatically less power than using your phone’s GPS. We’ve made sure that the app does not drain your battery, and if you like, you can also disable the background location monitoring via the app’s settings.

If you’ve ever searched the App Store for travel related apps, it’s likely you’ve come across FlightTrack and FlightTrack Pro, two of the consistently top selling iOS apps in the travel category. The pro version ($9.99) is jam packed with features like push notification for flight updates, weather forecast for both arrival and departure airports, and Terminal maps, but the casual (and budget minded) traveller may not require all the premium extras. For those looking for a no frills and free version that provides some basic flight look up functionality, Mobiata has released just that - FlightTrack Free.

 Features of FlightTrack Free include:

  • Completely redesigned interface that integrates the flight details and flight map
  • Real-time departure & arrival info, delays, gate numbers and baggage claim info
  • Zoomable maps with satellite imagery
  • Covers more than 16,000 airports worldwide
  • Full international flight coverage with 1,400 airlines
  • Search and track a single flight at a time

Also notable is that this version has been completely re-designed with a new and attractive UI, which integrates flight details with flight maps. No doubt there are other apps that provide real time departure/ arrival info and don’t cost a cent, but FlightTrack Free is right up there among the best looking freebies I’ve seen so far. Paired with Mobiata’s other free TripDeck – Travel Itinerary Manager app, your next work/personal trip should be well covered.

Here’s a chart showing the features offered between the different versions of FlightTrack.

Better yet, the apps are now $20 off, so NAVIGON NA is on sale for $39.99, and the USA and Canada apps are only $29.99. Check out the press release and video demo for more info after the break.

The Next Generation of Onboard Navigation Apps: NAVIGON 2.0 for iPhone Lets You Download Maps by State

Map Management Capabilities Prolong Internal Phone Storage, also Includes an Option for Quarterly Map Updates and a New User Interface

Hamburg, Germany, November 17, 2011-NAVIGON GmbH, a leading provider of mobile phone onboard navigation, today launched the second generation of its award-winning iPhone navigation app, NAVIGON 2.0 for iPhone. The new version completely redefines core elements of iPhone navigation, including a new and unique map management function and an in app purchase option for quarterly map updates, both not found in any other onboard navigation app. Also included is a very simple and intuitive user interface. Existing NAVIGON for iPhone users receive the update to the new version at no cost.

“Navigation systems have become more complex over the last years. We’ve added over 30 new features to our app since it first launched, ranging from traffic and parking information to advanced lane guidance, and our challenge with this new version was to not just add new functionalities but take the overall user experience to the next level,” said Gerhard Mayr, NAVIGON vice-president of worldwide mobile phones and new markets. “We completely rethought the way the app interface is structured and as a result, NAVIGON 2.0 is more intuitive and easier to use than ever before. We’re also the first ones to solve the problem of having to save large amounts of map data on the phone to be independent of a data connection. The new version allows users to pick exactly which maps they need on their iPhone, leaving more room for other apps or photos and videos, for example.”

Map Management and Update Capabilities
NAVIGON 2.0 is the first iPhone onboard navigation app that separates the app from the maps, allowing users to choose which map regions to download to their device. Users who, for example, own the USA version can pick the states they want immediately and download additional regions at a later time[1]. This ability prolongs internal phone storage, since users save only the maps they need on their device. Separating the app and maps also simplifies future updates, as users can update the app (about 40MB) without reinstalling the maps multiple times.

NAVIGON 2.0 is also the first iPhone navigation app to offer quarterly map updates. The FreshMaps service uses trusted, field-verified, and quality-controlled map and points of interest updates from NAVTEQ® to ensure the most accurate data possible. Users can keep their maps accurate and reliable by receiving quarterly updates for a one-time fee. FreshMaps also upgrades the USA or regional versions to the full North America map. NAVIGON’s new Latest Map Guarantee provides customers the latest NAVTEQ map available when purchasing NAVIGON 2.0 for iPhone.

New User Interface
The new user interface is much easier to use, allowing to easily switch between different pages with animated menus and new multi-touch user gestures. It is now possible to access the start screen during navigation to enter a new address without having to first stop the current route. In addition, NAVIGON separated the app options into two menus, differentiating between settings and actions. The new Settings menu allows users to easily customize functions and change preferences, for example when to receive speed warnings, while the new Actions menu lets you use functions that are needed while navigating such as points of interest search and social network postings.

NAVIGON 2.0 for iPhone also has a fresh new look that displays the map in the background even when accessing menu pages. Furthermore, it is very easy to rotate and zoom maps in any direction when in 3D mode and tap points of interest on the map to instantly add them to a route.

Pricing and Availability
The NAVIGON 2.0 upgrade is available at no cost for all existing customers. NAVIGON’s North American apps and selected in app purchases are up to $25 off until November 30, 2011. The promotional offerings are below next to the regular prices.

Oink, brought to you by Kevin Rose (the man behind Digg.com), has landed for iOS. Unlike other social recommendation tools, Oink lets you rate and rank things around you. So instead of simply recommending a local burger joint to your friends, you can snap a photo of that mouth-watering hamburguesa and giving it a rating. The more items you share and rate, the more “cred” you build. This way others with similar tastes/interests will know who to trust.

What you can do with Oink:
• Rate items around you and share with your followers
• See all the cool stuff your friends and other users are Oinking
• Find the best things in town (e.g. Best “Pizza” in Denver)
• Find the items at a place (e.g., Best roller coasters at Six Flags)
• Build “cred” in your areas of interest
• Share your Oink activity on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare

Oink is free to use, though at this point it appears you’ll need to wait for that invite before you can start rating items around you. Video demo after the gap.

Ever find that the current crop of flight tracking apps (say FlightTrack) don’t quite do it for you from an interface point of view, or perhaps they boast features that you’ll never use anyway? If so, Flight Card may very well be right up your alley. Designed with simplicity in mind, Flight Card will provide you with all the pertinent flight info on one page – or basically a “Boarding Pass” as the app calls it. So your flight, terminal and gate numbers, as well as departure times are right at your finger tips. Here are the app features:

– All the info you need in just one ‘card’
– Know everything at the right moment with the help of the different colors and subtitles for each card.
– We track +90.000 flights each day, from +1500 airlines on +16.000 different airports.
– Support for spanish and english language. More to come.

Having played around with Flight Card for the last little while, I can say that it’s hands down the best looking flight tracker I’ve come across thus far. Once you enter your flight info, the boarding pass will be displayed, and it appears you can create as many as your heart desires. Tapping on the screen will toggle between takeoff and landing times/gates/terminal# (shown via up/down arrows), which is a nice touch indeed. While not perfect — the boarding pass doesn’t show date of flight and I’ve noticed that an arrival time for a particular flight that was early by 40 minutes to still being showing the scheduled landing time — Flight Card is off to a very promising start. I’d say that as long as you don’t need all the other features like weather, map routing and push notification found in similar apps, Flight Card is a splendid choice.

With the launch of seven new travel guides for spring, we will be offering them for free today in the Apple App Store. In the Android market, the 11 selected apps will be discounted to 0.99 Thursday and Friday, perhaps even longer so keep an eye out! I’ve tried plenty of travel apps on my iPhone and I keep coming back to the mTrip apps thanks to its impressive feature set. With its Trip Planner mode, users can create their own Itinerary based on trip dates, travel interests, pace intensity and more. Apple seems to be on a roll of late with App Store app lists. First came The Best Games You’ve Never Played, a roundup of hidden gems that haven’t quite burned up the app charts. Now they’ve released the Awesome iOS 4 Apps list, a collection of apps and games that have been updated to take advantage of iOS 4′s new features, like support for the Retina Display and Multitasking/Fast App Switching. Here are some notable that have made the list:

Now I haven’t tried all 42 apps on the list, but I don’t think I’d consider all of them to be awesome. I suppose it’s all a matter of personal preference and interests (and of course, apps that actually have been updated for iOS 4 already). The entire Apple roundup can be found right here on iTunes.

As someone that goes camping regularly, this was a fun, not to mention useful, assignment for me. Armed with two camping Apps, I set forth into the UK countryside.

The two apps in question are Sites UK and Campsites & Caravan Parks. The former is slightly more expensiveo. I’ve tested both Apps as thoroughly as possible and below are my findings.

Finding sites

Naturally, an important feature for an App such as this is the ability to search for campsites to stay at. Sites UK comes out on top here, as you can search by County, by Anything (i.e. site name), Postcode and Current Location. Campsites & Caravan Parks only enables you to search by City, Town or Region, or List by Region.

The latter, however, does have additional filtering options. You can select whether you want to see all available sites, or select whether you’re looking for a camping pitch, caravan, camping pod etc. You can also select whether you would like to be able to view campsites which are for Club Members only – useful if you’re a member of The Caravan Club or The Camping and Caravanning Club.

Once you’ve located a suitable site – both Apps enable you to save it to your favourites for easy reference.

Both Apps enable you to contact campsites at the touch of a button – press a phone number to dial, email address to send an email or website address to view their website. Campsites & Caravan Parks has the upper hand here, as the websites open within the App – meaning if it’s not what you want you can quickly go back and carry on searching, without having to restart the App. However, this App is problematic because it only lists campsites which have their own website, severely cutting down their number of listings.

Follow up

So, you’ve found a site, you’ve stayed there. Now what? Well, both Apps allow you to upload a review, helping out other App users who may wish to check out other people’s opinions of a particular place. You can submit and read reviews from within both Apps. Sites UK will also allow you to view and upload photos if you wish. Campsites & Caravan Parks doesn’t currently have this capability, but it does have the excellent feature that you can write reviews offline and they’ll be uploaded next time you have connection, which can be very useful if you’re out in the sticks!

If you wish to suggest a site for either App, both of them simply open an email to the developer – leaving you to guess which information they want to know. This would have been much better done via a contact form for you to fill in, so they have all the information they need on hand.

Overview

On the whole, both Apps have their pros and cons. Sites UK has by far the most campsites available – after searching for all five sites visited over the past week or so, Sites UK had all five of them. Campsites & Caravan Parks had just two. Some additional searching for sites I’ve visited in the past showed Sites UK had all of them, whereas Campsites & Caravan Parks was severely lacking in listings.

However, counteracting this huge plus for Sites UK is the fact that the sites aren’t stored within the App. To get the information you require, you have to rely on having an internet connection, which isn’t always possible. So if you’re stuck in the sticks with no internet and nowhere to stay, Sites UK won’t help much. Even if you have got internet connection, the App is incredibly slow once you’ve selected how you want to search – and is quite buggy. For example, sometimes clicking on one of the options, i.e. List by County, you’re presented with a blank page and even waiting for load time shows up nothing. Bizarrely, each UK county is listed twice, too.

On the flipside, Campsites & Caravan Parks stores all the sites and their information within the App, so it’s always at your fingertips. But with such a considerable quantity fewer sites than the other App, you also have to question the usefulness of this.

I can’t call a winner here. The perfect App would be an amalgamation of the two compared here. Sites UK wins in terms of information available, but it is buggy and totally useless when you’re in an area with no phone signal. So my advice, if you’re desperate for camping information on your iPhone is to buy both Apps. That or make sure you’ve done all your homework before you’ve packed the car.

The devastation and dire situation in Haiti due to the recent earthquakes have opened the hearts (and wallets) of people from all over the world. Donations have been pouring into aid agencies in hopes of saving lives and help rebuild one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Today, Weiner Family Studios have announced that all proceeds from sales this week of their iPhone app A Family Matters, will be donated to AmeriCares.

Family Matters is an iPhone/iPod touch application that allows families to enjoy deeper more meaningful conversations. Mr. Weiner says, “My family created Family Matters to help parents and children communicate more effectively. Unlike most applications targeted at children, this isn’t designed to “keep the kids busy. It is designed to help the family learn from and enjoy each other.”

The app is intended to help foster better communication between parents and children, so needless to say, it won’t appeal to you if you don’t have your own family just yet. However, if you do and would like to check out this family app that was recently featured in the App Store’s What’s Hot section, now would be a great time as your $1.99 will go into helping a good cause. Press Release:

Weiner Family Studios today announced they are donating all proceeds from its well-received iPhone application, “A Family Matters” to a Haiti relief fund this week. A Family Matters is an iPhone and iPod touch application that allows families to enjoy deeper more meaningful conversations. What Family Matters gives you is a set of questions and activities designed to help you communicate more effectively with your children.

Mansfield, MA – Weiner Family Studios is donating all proceeds from its well-received iPhone application, “A Family Matters” ™ to a Haiti relief fund this week.

According to the developer, Scott Weiner, “The disaster in Haiti is terrible and my family wants to do what we can to help. Since ‘A Family Matters’ has gained exposure as part of Apple’s What’s Hot list we have increased popularity and the opportunity to donate more to the relief than usual. For this reason we have decided to take all proceeds from sales this week and donate it to AmeriCares.”

Apple showcases interesting applications in their What’s Hot list on their iTunes App store. Through this list “A Family Matters” gained popularity and ranked as high as the #2 application in the Travel category.

“We are doing our small part through donation but more importantly we are hoping to increase awareness so others help too. They can purchase A Family Matters for only $1.99 and help that way or they can contact a reputable charity directly.”

About Family Matters
We built this application to help us parent more effectively. We were tired of family dinners where the conversation consisted of “How was your day?”… “fine”. What Family Matters ™ gives you is a set of questions and activities designed to help you communicate more effectively with your children. We found it leads to more and deeper conversations with our kids and we think it could do the same for you. Unlike other applications that quiz or provide facts, this tool is venue-driven.

This means the activities are geared toward your location. We currently cover common places you may engage in conversation or need to pass the time such as restaurants, waiting rooms or on long road trips. Of course there is a general category for use around the dinner table or practically anywhere you have a few minutes to spend together.
