Apple seems to be on a roll of late with App Store app lists. First came The Best Games You’ve Never Played, a roundup of hidden gems that haven’t quite burned up the app charts. Now they’ve released the Awesome iOS 4 Apps list, a collection of apps and games that have been updated to take advantage of iOS 4′s new features, like support for the Retina Display and Multitasking/Fast App Switching. Here are some notable that have made the list:

Now I haven’t tried all 42 apps on the list, but I don’t think I’d consider all of them to be awesome. I suppose it’s all a matter of personal preference and interests (and of course, apps that actually have been updated for iOS 4 already). The entire Apple roundup can be found right here on iTunes.

So you never got ’round to learning how to play a real instrument…but you do have an iPhone. With so many great music apps available at the App Store, you don’t really have to pick up a guitar or play the piano in order to create awesome tunes. We’ve already seen Guiz belt out several songs as a one-man band. More recently, apple002 on youtube performed Poker Face using not one, but 4 iPhones. Equipped with apps like I Am T-Pain and Beatmaker, this cute Asian diva showcases her vocal and musical talents. Considering that the song was done using nothing but iPhones and apps, this rendition of Poker Face could very well make Lady Gaga proud.

Wait! That’s not all. apple002 also gives Beyonce’s Irreplaceable an iPhone makeover (which features some sweet vocals). Video after the gap!

Sweet news from Line 6. The MIDI Memo Recorder is a free piece of software which saves custom midi interface settings and records sessions to the iDevice. This ain’t another class lecture interface, it is a professional touring/recording software/hardware interface for musicians. MIDI has been a longtime standard in effects mastering and creation for many musicians. The best part now, however, is that it goes mobile and even works as a backup settings organiser in case of gear breakage. While the software can be downloaded now, the MIDI Mobilizer hardware attachment won’t be available till “Spring 2010″ – gotcha…

The 2010 Vancouver Olympics are still a few weeks off, but Canadian recording engineer and long-time TMA buddy (though I prefer to call him ‘mate’), Stephen Heidinga is already pushing for gold. Musician Stephan Moccio’s ‘I Believe‘, is sung by Nikki Yanofsky and has exploded all over the CTV and Canada’s largest news organisations. But TouchMyApp’s centrefold is Stephen Heidinga, the talented and kind long-time friend of TouchMyApps’ founders.

Humbly surprised, the 190cm giant says: “I could never have expected this. The craziest part is that I’m JUST 2 years out of school and I’ve been a part of two gold records and now the Olympic theme song.”

At the end of 2009, I was caught listening different. TapTunes had me shuffling albums in new ways and enjoying the cleverness of my index finger whilst bopping out to Ice Cube. Some time ago we reported the problems Palm Heroes Team had in submitting their latest application to Apple for review. Having no other way out but to submit to Apple’s “recomendations” they quickly changed the “offensive” pharse to something a bit more neutral. And just a little while later, their unique app – Jukemaster is finally on the AppStore.

According to Retryonyms website, DopplerPad is an expressive touch instrument designed exclusively for iPhone & iPod Touch. Experienced electronic music creators will recognize this as the iPhone version of a Kaossilator. Whatever you call it, Dopplerpad is one of the most fun and useful music apps available on any mobile device, and at only $10, a much better introduction into electronical music and sequencing than $100+ equipment such as the Kaossilator.

I used to disregard the American trance/progressive scene as derivative and boring, but damn, Markus Schulz’ exciting first album, Progression, has showed me how erred that thinking was. While he is a naturalised American from Germany, he is bringing the beats to the USA with a vigour that sends me into shivers. I purchased Progression on a blessed whim about a year ago when the album was no more than a great, few weeks old listen – now it is among my staple listens. And because of Markus’ technical mixing, Progression houses a few benchmark songs for headphone testing! Well, now the American trance man himself has become a Global DJ Top 15 member and has an app. Markus Schulz by phizuu is all things Schulz, but in your pocket, and unlike myriad other web-leaching apps, free. Did I download it? What do you think?
