lolo, developers behind popular fitness apps like Easy Abs and Easy Arms (two apps that have helped me get back into shape), have released 7-Minute Workout (High Intensity Training) for the iPhone. In case you’re not familiar, the 7 Minute Workout first appeared on NY Times and is “based on science”, where you do 12 sets of exercises in 7 minutes. It does get pretty intense during this short span – especially if you push yourself. Since reading about it a month ago, I’ve done a number of these 7 minute workouts and I find them great when you don’t have a whole lot of time to exercise. Compared to the many 7 minute workout apps that have sprung up on the App Store, lolo’s is probably the most involved of the bunch.

lolo tries to improve upon the premise of the 7 Minute workout by implementing additional features not found in other similar apps. For starters, you get to choose between Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced levels, then you select exactly what types of equipment you have at your disposal. There are 200 unique exercises and each include video, voice and coaching pointers. In order words, this app is completely customizable based on your preferences.

7-Minute Workout (High Intensity Training) is now available for the iPhone for $1.99.

With the new year well underway, and, many people excited about this year’s new health and fitness resolutions, I thought it would be a good idea to review a wonderful gem found in the App Store. When it comes to staying fit, our gadgets and some well chosen apps can actually give us the edge or the push needed to reach higher levels of athletic performance. If, like me, your goal is to attain better overall health while using an app that’s not going to break the bank on your iDevice — and having fun at the same time — you must read on. I completed some intensive testing of an app called ‘MyFitnessPal‘, which integrates both nutritional and physical performance metrics, turning your iPhone or iPad into a powerful training tool.

myfitnesspal-ipad-2

MyFitnessPal is a fully customisable and versatile training and dieting assistant. On one hand, it tracks nutritional information for over 2 million food items and on the other, it lets you record over 350 cardiovascular and strength training exercises while giving you the flexibility to add your own information as needed. At the end of each day you have a clear picture of your caloric intake and expenditure but also vital information such as your total protein, fat and carbohydrate consumption so you can adjust your nutritional and activity levels as need be.

myfitnesspal-iphone-4

The Good

MyFitnessPal has a nicely refined user interface that is easy to use and gives you quick access to your information. Your data is easily and quickly inputed manually or automatically using the handy UPC code reader via your device’s camera. Likewise, your data can be retrieved effortlessly in order for you to track your nutritional and physical activity trends. On the iPad, the app comes into an eye catching full resolution HD version.

The app works as a standalone application but your data is also synced automatically to the cloud and can be accessed using any computer by navigating to MyFitnessPal’s website and logging into your account. The website gives you the opportunity to access complimentary features, track trends and set goals for yourself. You can also use the app with fully integrated popular fitness accessories such as heart rate monitors and scales, making it easier to monitor your progress.

To make the app more complete and to motivate users, you can get fit with friends by letting each other have access to your metrics. Study after study confirms that people tend to be more successful when making these life changes with peers rather than going at it alone. You can even use your Facebook account to invite friends to join you on your way to better health.

Another great feature of the app is that it adapts to your nutritional needs. For instance, on days where you are more active, your daily nutritional values and goals will go up in order to meet the increase in physical activity.

myfitnesspal-iphone-2

Room for Improvement

While I find this app to be well rounded and complete, there are a couple of things I would like to see added. First, having access to an even more in depth analysis of nutritional information would be extremely useful. For example, I have found it very difficult to meet my potassium consumption values. The app could somehow act as a nutritionist and give recommendations on what type of food or supplements to take. A section dedicated to supplements and vitamin intake would also nice. Second, the integration of even more third party accessories is a must. My devices of choice (e.g., Nike Fuelband) are not yet supported by the app and I had to input my data manually. While it didn’t take long to do so, automation is key for these type of apps to remain successful. If you are in the market for a new heart monitor or scale I would suggest you try the app for a couple of months and then purchase a device supported by MyFitnessPal.

To sum it up, I would definitely recommend downloading this app and using it to achieve your fitness goals. It is free in the App Store so you don’t have much to lose by doing so. If you’ve ever tried to write your own food and fitness log and failed or given up after a few days, MyFitnessPal may be the very app you’ve been waiting for. This one gets a ‘Grab It’ rating.

As we all know – life can be stressful. And one way to make it a little bit more bearable is using an ambient sounds app to block out the annoying noises of everyday fuss. Whether in the office or outside they allow to, at least temporarily, shift your mind to someplace peaceful. Not content with only providing a listening experience, the developers behind Inception – The App released Dimensions. Adventures in the Multiverse, a unique app that adds some original gameplay elements to make it even more part of your routine.

It’s hard to classify Dimensions, proving once again the iOS is the perfect platform for innovation. Think of it as a hearing aid for other dimensions. But all of this is wrapped around a platform that Farmville itself would not be shy of.

reviews-dimensions-2

First and foremost Dimensions is an ambient/meditation sound producing app. However, unlike other similar releases, it does not have a pre-defined set of tracks for you to enjoy. Instead it utilizes the iPhone’s microphone and transforms surrounding noise to create a unique experience in realtime. The result is influenced not only by the source noise but the dimension within the app you are currently occupying.

reviews-dimensions-3

These dimensions are unlocked by performing specific actions – i.e. Tranquility, featuring music that’s more relaxing, is unlocked by being in a quiet place, while the more energetic Kinetic requires the iPhone to be in motion. Some dimensions even allow you to communicate with other players by creating a virtual space where you can send short voice messages. Once a dimension is unlocked you can visit it anytime without the hassle of matching the predefined conditions. Not all dimensions are available right from the start, thus requiring you to first open up a set in order to reach a new level.

But this is only the start. To make the experience more interesting (and to stimulate people spending more cash of course) the devs added a freemium minigame component. Every so often while listening to the mysterious sounds Dimensions produces, the game will say that something strange is going on. If you check the game at this point and hold the hotspot in the center you will get a map of your surroundings (powered by Google Maps of course), bathed in an eerie light with strange items scattered across the landscape. They might include Quantum (the game’s currency), artifacts and/or Nephilim.

reviews-dimensions-4

Quantum can be gathered by simply catching it in your beam of light while Artifacts will require a tractor beam to reel them in (which incidentally takes Quantum as fuel ). The Nephilim are the bad guys and you’ll have to use the same beam to repel them, otherwise they’ll steal the artifacts you found. To unlock the next level of dimensions you need to gather all artifacts in the already open ones. The artifacts can also be bought using Quantum. You guessed where this is leading to, right? Yep, in addition to be found in-game Quantum can also be bought using real-live cash.

The visuals in Dimensions are minimalistic but stylish. I especially liked the eerie way the map looked in the artifact-hunting minigame. I couldn’t help but think, however, the devs missed an opportunity to further integrate Augmented Reality elements using the iPhone’s camera. Hunting for quantum, artifacts and beating the Nephilim would’ve been ever so much fun if it was overlaid on top of a live feed put through some additional filters to make the video look more like from another dimension.

reviews-dimensions-5

Of course it would’ve been great to have the iPhone be a window to another dimension, fully embracing the augmented reality capabilities of the platform. But even limited to audio only, Dimensions provides a unique experience heralding the next step in ambient sound apps. The added game elements unfortunately suffer from a somewhat unbalanced freemium model pushing quite a bit to use real cash if you want to have access to all “tracks” in a reasonable timeframe. At $0.99 though it’s definitely worth a try, especially if you want a taste of what the future holds.

With this I declare Dimensions. Adventures in the Multiverse officially touched!

With 2012 just around the corner, it’s highly possible that one of your New Year’s Resolution is to finally work on that once-prominent six pack and get in better shape. I know it’s one of mine! My biggest issue though is that I just can’t find the motivation to hit the gym on a consistent basis. I’ve tried a number of workout apps on the iPhone, but for one reason or another, I never stuck with any of them. Well, that was until I stumbled upon Easy Abs by lolo, an awesome exercise app aimed at strengthening your core in just minutes a day.

So what’s so great about Easy Abs? For starters, these workouts can be done just about anywhere and for as little as 3 minutes at a time. They can be customized for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced users depending on their fitness level. The 70 available exercises will vary based on the available equipment indicated. So if all you have is a sweaty ol’ yoga mat and a rickety chair, all subsequent workouts will take that into account.

Once you’ve setup your profile (fitness level, workout length, equipment etc), your virtual personal trainer awaits. She’ll take you step-by-step through the series of exercises for that particular day (with continuous video) so you can easily follow along. And with lolo’s optional beat-sync technology, all the music added to the playlist will automatically match the intensity of your workout. So if you decide to bump up the intensity level at any given point (more reps, longer workout time), the tempo of the song being played will also pick up its beat. When done, your workout will be logged into the history section, where it’ll keep track of the day, the type of exercises, calories burned, and duration.

As of writing, I’ve completed 12 days of 8 min workouts over a 3 week period and I must say that I’ve been more than surprised by the results. My core is stronger, my (bad) back doesn’t bother me nearly as much and I’m even starting to see the outline of that 6 pack I thought had deserted me for good. Just don’t be fooled by the short workout sessions – they’re designed for maximum efficiency and output.

If you want to get in better shape and/or can’t find the time for the gym, I highly recommend you check out Easy Abs on the iPhone. It’s currently on sale at $0.99, and there’s even a free version you can try first that comes with 16 exercises. lolo has also released Easy Legs and Boot Camp Challenge for those of you who wish to work out different areas of the body. Haven’t tried them myself yet, but they’re definitely on my todo list.

That’s right, no extra monitoring equipment or accessories are required. Simply set the iPad 2 on a table, get in position and the app does the rest. App Description

About iBacon: a game you’ll flip over:
ibacon is a “novelty game app” that uses 30 fps video loops to cook real bacon! Users can pinch virtual cooking tongs to flip individual slices, and even tilt to pour off the bacon grease, tilt to eat bacon (similar to drinking beer app), as well as shake to turn off the smoke alarm… plus more.

Vegetarian approved, eat bacon guilt free! This is the first iPhone game to use 30fps video as the basis for the game, bringing a “bacon realism” that keeps users hungering for bacon! Check out the company website for screen shots and a video demo of the game (see link below). Additionally, below, there is a direct link to the Apple iTunes store for the game.

You dream of becoming a three-star chef (Michelin Rating) and you LOVE bacon! You didn’t attend the Culinary Institute of America and you haven’t won any James Beard Awards, you just love bacon, and you like it cooked to sizzling perfection! Impress your friends as you cook bacon right on your iPhone or iPod touch, taking it from Raw to Cooked by using virtual tongs to flip this universally delicious pork product. Shot in HB video (HB = Hot Bacon), this “game simulator” is the first of its kind, using full-motion video as the basis for the game. It will make everyone wonder: what’s that mouth-watering sizzle coming from your iPhone/iPod touch? Answer: ibacon!

ibacon takes full advantage of multi-touch, vibrate, and the accelerometer to:

  • Pinch: Use your fingers to pinch the cooking tongs, and flip each individual slice of bacon to hot, smokey perfection!
  • Pour: Drain off any accumulated bacon grease by tilting your device to the left.
  • Shake: If your bacon sets off the smoke alarm, shake the device to turn on the exhaust fan and cool that bacon down!
  • Splat: Swipe left or right to clear off grease splatters!
  • Eat: When your bacon is perfectly cooked, press the “eat bacon” button and tilt the device to the right or left to eat your bacon (note: the author of this game does not condone eating raw or undercooked bacon – please be sure to cook your bacon fully before eating).
  • Sights and Sounds: Hear your bacon crackle and pop as it cooks. See puffs of smoke and feel the device vibrate as grease splatters right on your screen (and the cook-top). You can almost smell that bacon-y goodness.

Minimum Requirements:

  • iPhone (all models) and iPod touch (Gen 1, 2 and 3)
  • Requires OS 2.2.1 or later
  • Tested and runs on iPhone 3GS and OS 3.1.2
  • 35.4 MB

Do you want to lose weight? Do you spend hours every day carefully writing down what you ate? Do you forget stuff? Well, have we got an app for you! Have we? Introducing – Foobi – Track and Balance Your Diet – the space age way designed to make tracking your daily diet just that bit easier.

Foobi is exclusively designed to track what group the food you eat belongs to. No, it DOESN’T do any calorie tracking, diet recommendations or anything of that sort. Whether you’re a “body builder, vegetarian, nutritionist, or just someone who wants to eat healthier”, it should work just as well to simply track servings assigned to food groups.

We’ll leave it to the developer’s conscience whether it really is of any help to track just the food groups; we’ll concentrate on how well it does what it says. And there is really nothing bad to say regarding this. With 17 built-in groups and the option of adding custom ones with customizable name, color, icon and limit, it’s enough to satisfy even the most gourmet eater. You can hide or downright remove all the groups you don’t want to track. Adding a serving is easy and requires a single tap. As I noted, a serving limit can be assigned to each group. While it will not specifically forbid you to exceed it, you will be able to track overeating.

In addition to tracking food groups, Foobi has a nifty little reporting tool which is activated by rotating the iDevice in landscape mode. It can show your weekly diet balance as a bar chart to help you see where you went wrong.

One thing Foobi really excels in is – the interface. It is simply beyond all praise. It is slick, fast and extremely easy to use. Everybody knows that the main problem with diet tracking is that it usually is just too much of a bother to write everything down. Well, Foobi makes it so easy that you might just actually use it. In the end, what are a couple of seconds?

If you wish to keep track of what you eat but writing down the meals, counting calories and all that other jazz is just too much for you – you may want to check out Foobi. Its simplicity is both a blessing and a curse. It may just be easy enough to use that you actually WILL use it. And it costs less than a cup of coffee. However, users interested in a more serious diet tracker may want to skip this one though.

With this I declare Foobi – Track and Balance Your Diet officially touched!

It’s not much of a stretch to say that today is a rugged rebuff to the senses. From home life to work life, everyday can be as taut as hell. Deepak Chopra, a guru of physical and mental healing, has partnered with Signal Patterns to bring Stress Free to the App Store at a timely juncture.

Stress Free is an interactive book which connects to internet to bring relevant content to the user. Content ranges from videos and sound to location based services which help you uncover spots of interest. Of course, the interactive portions require Stress Free to be connected to internet in order to function. Other functions are built-in and can be accessed wherever you are. But even internet-only content can be re-accessed for reference.

As long as you can get beyond that hurdle, there is a lot to enjoy. Firstly, Chopra’s app is laid out very well, abiding by an easy-to-use interface. Users set up accounts with email and Twitter and access lessons which are broken up by the app into keys. Each have unique activities and require the user to put effort into reflection and response.

Activities range from trying something new to simple exercise routines, meditation, personal quizzes, and even yoga. But what makes Stress Free a worthwhile investment is its direct links to Dr. Chopra, to online videos, and built in journaling support. It isn’t a reading app; it isn’t a listening app; and it isn’t a watching app. It is all of those bundled with great support from Dr. Chopra who promises to answer questions as promptly as possible. This section does need to be updated (or used) more thoroughly though as it can be helpful to users.

In other words, both he and Signal Pattern aren’t just firing off another catch-all app, they have created a support platform for healing which they stand behind. As you work through each step, unlocking new portions of the app and reference your old work, you gain a sense of accomplishment, and hopefully healing. The simplest of items: journal support is really a great feature which works to anchor my feelings and draw up and out emotions and desires which may have laid dormant.

The current New Year’s sale of 4.99$ is a steal, but even the full price is well worth more than a book of the same name. Of course, if you are stock on an iPod touch and haven’t internet access all the time, using Stress Free may be difficult at times. But I see the value in this app which stresses (sic) the application of feelings, the extraction of desires, and the reliance on meditation and repose.
