The recent reboot of the Transformers franchise left me with mixed feelings. On one hand I definitely enjoy the new look and feel of the robots themselves. On the other, while the first movie was at least half-decent, it pretty much went downhill thereafter. And what to expect from the licensed game accompanying the latest movie –TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON – was a mystery for me.
I don’t know about you, but I hate bugs. Passionately and of all shapes and sizes. For people like me the App Store has a myriad of bug-killing games. But Cyan, the legendary makers of Myst (TMA Review) and Riven: The Sequel to Myst (TMA Review) have gone one step further and actually made it a fun and entertaining artillery puzzler out of the concept of flinging bugs into space. Ready, aim, chuck!
Few titles have left me with more fond memories than the good old Death Track – one of the first racing/shooting games ever. Unsurprisingly its top-down remake in the late 90s -Death Rally – immediately became my favourite pastime for hours on end. So when I heard that Remedy was bringing this classic to the iDevice, I was thrilled beyond imagination. My only concern was how Death Rally would transfer to the touchscreen.
The Devil May Cry series is certainly one of the hallmarks of the console action/slashers. Known for spectacular stylized combos and a mix of both ranged and melee combat, it has set a standard few have been able to achieve. And it seems Nintendo and Sony have ever more reasons to be wary of the iOS devices, as Capcom has quite unexpectedly released a version of the latest reincarnation of the franchise on the App Store. Let’s see if Devil May Cry 4 refrain can live up to the benchmark set by the console versions of the series.
Lara Croft is one of the most widely known game characters ever, in many ways revolutionizing the way females were perceived in the industry in the mid-90s. She has seen numerous appearances in games on almost every console imaginable and even has a couple of movies of her own to boot, starring the luscious Angelina Jolie. So you can imagine my surprise when without any kind of fanfare or publicity Square Enix released the first Lara Croft game for the iDevice platform late last year – Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
EA is one of the few major publishers that have truly embraced the App Store. Even better, many of their titles truly set a quality benchmark for others to follow, from the classic boarding goodness of SCRABBLE to becoming the mayor in SimCity Deluxe to the parkour action of Mirror’s Edge. One of the more underpopulated genres in the App Store is still the augmented reality variety. Despite having been introduced shortly after release of the iPhone 3GS (almost a year and a half ago) it still features barely a handful of noteworthy titles. Nevertheless, slowly but surely it’s starting to pick up steam. In September, we saw an original proof of concept action-shooter title ARDefender (TMA Review). And just recently THQ released their own view on the concept with Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner.
Of all of my university years, probably the two games I have most fond memories of are Heroes of Might and Magic III (which already have seen an iResurrection as Palm Heroes (TMA Review) ) and Worms 2: Armageddon. Ah, those hours upon hours spent in the dorm with my buddies, a couple of crates of beer and Worms 2 instead of wasting time on stupid old lectures… And when I saw this classic pop up again recently on the App Store, tears of nostalgia built up inside me.
With the horrendous amount of various Action/Shooter titles on the App Store, it is increasingly more difficult to find something that jumps out at you. Sure, there are loads of dual-stick and side/vertical-scrolling shooters, but to find anything truly original you’ll have to dig really deep. The most recent entry by Gaijin Entertainment however, brings a refreshing look on how an action title could be done on the iDevice in Braveheart.
It’s amazing how little we think of the technology around us and how much we’ve learned to rely upon it. All those huge automated production lines and supercomputers, which essentially make the parts required to be built by themselves with little or no ultimate intervention by a human being. No wonder the vision of the future, ruled by an elite few commanding such technology is a popular theme in Science-Fiction. And of course there are always those who oppose them! Viva la Resistance in Revolt!
