It seems that poker game apps run the same path as twitter and fart apps; more and more appear everyday. As is the case with most apps though, the majority are either just okay, or plain garbage. Lucky for me, I recently got my hands on a great release from Powerhouse developer Glu Mobile and their sure winner, World Series Of Poker Hold ‘Em Legend.  This is a great app for seasoned vets and newcomers alike, read on to to see how the chips stacked up.

What sets the greats apart from the loads of poker App Store are the details: the extra effort that went into making the game. You’ll see exactly what I mean.

From the splash screen to the main menus, eye candy is everywhere. Bright colours, clean and crisp patterns and designs are everywhere. Compared to other apps I’ve played, WSOP is classy. When touring through the menus and various screens everything is clean, extremely easy to see/read, and vibrant. In game, the tables and cards all look great. They even fancied up the placeholder for your username and chip count.

Another thing that I love is location. Since the World Series Of Poker belongs to Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment, they use real casino locations in the game. They even show little video clips before you enter into a tournament at a new casino. A great little bit of promo work that adds a nice sense of authenticity to the game.

If you aren’t as seasoned a player as some, there is a great detailed help menu available. It is full of info on how to play, tips and info about the different types of gameplay I encourage even veterans of the game to check it out. Every game is a little bit different and knowing those differences can’t hurt.

As far as gameplay modes, they really have everyone covered here. The main modes that I liked and used the most are Cash game and Legend Career. The cash game is exactly that. You take money from your bankroll and enter into cash tournaments. In Legend Career you play in tournaments escalating in both buy-in price and prize amounts. Building up your bankroll, you earn achievements and unlock high stakes events on your journey to winning a coveted bracelet.

When you’re done playing with yourself (get your mind out of the gutter). They also have multiplayer modes. The basic multiplayer is a one button jump into an online 9 player matchup. Every time I used it, I waited seconds before being able to find players and get the game underway. Definitely a surprising treat that gives them a leg up on some of the competition. The other option they have available is a heads up bluetooth match. Do you have a friend that swears up and down that he’s better than you? well you can boot up and start a heads up match with each other using your bluetooth connection and finally put that argument to rest.

One really neat feature that they added to the game was a bit of a cheat. Picture this. Your in a tournament, it’s down to the final 2 and you just went all in thinking you had the win locked. Then out of nowhere you’ve lost! Game over? Not anymore. Glu added a really great feature where using in-app purchasing, you can cheat and get back into the game for $0.99. Not a feature everyone will use but a really handy thing to have just in case.

There are a lot more extras in this game in the way of features and whatnot. I wont go into all of them here but I will point out a couple that I thought were great. First is the stats. Here you can see how much money you have, how many matches you’ve played and some results. A great feature for someone who likes to track their play. Another is the achievements. Although not a necessary feature of the game, it gives you a sense of accomplishment occasionally during regular game play that adds an extra bit of fun to it. Not to mention that design wise the badges look awesome.

In the end, World Series Of Poker Hold ‘Em Legends is a great title. With some of the best design work I’ve seen in awhile and enough tournaments to keep even the most addicted player busy for quite awhile. Add in all the real world details that they’ve worked into the game and I think fans and new comers a like will find a lot of value in this game.

Tyrian for iPod/iPhone is a revival of the 1994 cult classic shooter by Eclipse Productions. The game is based upon an open source version of the original called OpenTyrian. I should mention before getting into specifics that due to licensing differences, you will have to download some data files in addition to the app itself. This is perhaps due to the game’s use of files under a GPL license. The whole process only took about a minute on my wifi connection, so it shouldn’t take too long for most. So how does this classic shooter translate on the iDevice? Read on!

tyrian3

Tyrian for iPhone features:

  • Full Story & Arcade modes
  • Four action packed episodes: “Escape”, “Treachery”, “Mission: Suicide” & “An End to Fate”
  • Sophisticated weapon upgrade system with hundreds of weapon combinations to chose from
  • 50+ levels
  • Seven difficulty levels
  • Support for cheat codes, secret game modes, easter eggs, mini-games etc.
  • 30+ music soundtracks by Alexander Brandon with a Jukebox.

Mobila Interactive publishes the game on the iDevices, and they’ve done an excellent job of bringing this old school shooter back to life. Once you begin, you’ll see options to start a new game, load a saved game, view instructions and read information about Tyrian.

Starting a new game, you’ll be offered two different gameplay modes; Full Game and Arcade Mode. Full Game mode allows you to upgrade your ship, while Arcade Mode is a more straightforward affair without the upgrade abilities. There are five episodes to play; each offers Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulties.

tyrian2

Even if you’re a veteran of these type of old school shooters, you should begin in Easy mode. The controls for the ship consist of swipes across the screen with no visible control such as joysticks or directional pads. Weapons can be triggered through a bar, which hogs a part of the left side of the screen.

As I mention, you should try out the easy setting; the lack of visible controls make it difficult to move your ship at first, as you get accustomed to having your fingers block part of your view, and possibly a method of entry for your enemies. Enemies will fly at you from any direction and some, though not all are capable of shooting at you. You’ll also run into environmental obstacles that can deal large amounts of damage. These are indestructible, and must be avoided as they deal insane amounts of damage. The game introduces these as you near bosses, such as the first level’s spikes, which jut out from the sides threatening to tear a hole through your ship.

tyrian1

If you’re playing in Full Game mode, you can upgrade your ship before heading out into battle. You can add various types of weapons, such as accompanying shooters, and rear weapons, and increase your shields. Due to the sheer number of enemies that attack you, it’s a good idea to get as many of these upgrades as you can, especially rear shooters which can literally cover your back as you zoom around the screen dodging enemies and shooting back at them.

tyrian4

If you’re a fan of these types of old school arcade shooters, then this is a must buy. The controls will take a few tries getting used to, especially learning how to maneuver your ships around enemies without blocking your vision for too long, but once you’re adept, it will provide hours and hours of fun. The upgrade options available in the Full Game allow you to gain a handicap against an unfair computer enemy, and add more dynamism to your battles.

As a gamer with a lot of arcade nostalgia, I give this game a Kiss It rating. For those not familiar with this classic shooter or are somewhat hesitant at dropping $1.99 on the full game, Mobila Interactive has also released a relatively featured packed free lite version for all to try.

Have you ever wanted to play texas holdem with your friends, but don’t have a poker set around? Well now you can, with hoverpoker!

You don’t need to have an app each, just one phone is enough. The app will deal cards to each player, and you pass your phone around to each player to let them see their card and take action (call, raise, fold). To peek your card, touch both peek buttons on the screen.

They won’t be able to peek at your cards, because it makes a sound when you try to peek the card, and there’s a counter indicating how many times you have peeked the cards. Also, all players will not miss out because the app also acts as a poker dealer, announcing actions taken by players with a voice (call, raise, fold, how much $ raised etc).

You can play with up to 22 players, which is probably more than any poker game 99.99% of you ever had. All with one device!

Texas holdem rule used in this app : no-limit holdem. Blinds can be changed each round. You can undo rounds, and exiting will save the table state, so you can interrupt your game anytime.

There is nothing like walking onto a casino floor. You can feel the excitement & electricity in the air. The dice tumbling across the craps table, the sound of the ball dropping onto the roulette wheel, the sweet smell of Jean Nate perfume filtering off of the group of 70 year old ladies who are flocked around the slot machines while their husbands puff away on their $2 cigars and stare at the scantily dressed waitresses -all beautiful sights and sounds as you walk to your destination…the blackjack table. What, you don’t like the way Jean Nate smells? You allergic to cigar smoke? Ok fine, here is a new twist to your classic blackjack and it’s called 21 & Fun for your iDevice.

review-games-21andfun-pic5

The game plays as follows. You get one deck of cards and 4 lanes to place your cards. As you draw your cards, you must place them in one of the four lanes in an attempt to total 21. The values of the cards are as shown. Two thru ten are face value with Jacks, Queens and Kings worth a value of 10 apiece. The ever so famous “Ace” can be used as either 1 or 11. With that said, you also have another way of scoring : by that’s by totaling 21 or fewer points using 5 cards. If that’s not enough, you get 2 Wild Jokers which is an instant 21 in whichever lane regardless of what’s already compiled there. When achieving 21 or 5 cards, your lane clears and is open for a new run to begin.

review-games-21andfun-pic4

When dealt your card, you can place your cards in any available lane, but there is an element of strategy given the fact you can’t bust over the total of 21. So, place your cards carefully but don’t take your sweet old time because there is a 2 minute timer for each game. As you play you will see your point meter located on your left side of the screen increase with each 21 you pull off. On the right side of the screen there is what’s called a streak multiplier which goes up when you run on a streak of 21’s.

review-games-21andfun-pic3

To add some twists to the game, there is a so-called ‘mystery lane’ in which a score of 21 will add time to the clock. Each round, it changes. There is also an additional challenge called a pure 21. That is when you get a 21 which consists of an Ace with any face card or a 10. If you get a “pure 21” in each lane it will spell out the word “FUN!” and by doing that, the clock will be locked for the remainder of your current round and will expires when your deck runs out. If you do finish your deck, whatever time remains on your clock carries over to your next round.

review-games-21andfun-pic2

There are 3 modes to play. You have your Play Classic mode which is self explanatory. There is Play Advanced where your lane totals are disabled. And, last but not least, there is the Play Expert mode in which the lane totals and mystery lanes are disabled. Another very cool feature to this game is stats! As you know, I am a stat junkie and for those of you who don’t know this about me: I am a stat junkie! With the stat feature it keeps record of 17 categories! Yes people, 17 statistical categories, a few of which are: games played, best score, longest 21 streak and most 21’s in a round. Factor that in with Local, Country and Worldwide Leaderboards plus the option to share your scores with friends on facebook and it looks like we have a winner!
